The John Deere 68 backfired and the starter fluid lit on fire. Luckily I had extinguisher at the ready. Cold starts of John Deere 68, Sabre, Toro, and Raven. Subscribe.

Yeah, just make sure to be careful. You don't need nearly as much fluid as you used. Just get a little red straw for spray cans and stick it down the throat of the carb, then give it a little squirt. That should be all you need. Good luck on future projects, but keep an extinguisher on hand, and don't get too cocky.

@@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182 They seemed klunky to me when my friend had his. His was running a Honda GXV360 or 390. It ran quite well, especially since it originally had one of these crappy Briggs engines in it. I wasn't too impressed with it due to the awkward placement of the transmission controls. Then again, I've had mostly MTD riders that seemed to do what I neeeded them to do. Now I own a Walker Mowers zero turn machine powered by a Kohler Command Pro 23.5 HP engine and two Cub Cadet Series 2000 tractors with Kohler Command Pro 12.5 HP engines. Other riders I had for a time were a Honda HT3813, loved that machine but finding replacement parts for it would have been more expensive than I was willing to fix it, an old Poulan Pro tractor with an 18 HP Kohler Magnum opposed twin that sounded like a Diesel engine when it ran and a New Holland tractor with an 18 HP Kohler Command Pro V-Twin.

NEVER use ether to start ANY small engine. Its a great way to break a crank shear key on the flywheel on a backfire. Not only that, its HIGHLY flammable. I ALWAYS use a gas oil mix. If it is on an engine that has been sitting for a while, the oil will lubricate the cylinder. I have been working on small engines for 25 years or better. My first experience on a Snowblower was breaking the flywheel key because ether causes backfires every time. The sudden reverse of the engine causes the keyway to shear. You dont have to mix the oil gas 50/50 or anything like that, just a small amount in an oil can, or spray bottle works. Straight gas in a spray bottle eats the spray bottles guts. That fire was about out and you just made a BIG mess and wasted an extingusher. That powder is EVERYWHERE NOW. You should have used an air compressor and blown everything off. Dude, nice MESS.

@billyhorne4521

It only takes a little of the starting fluid like one small spray or two then choke it so it can suck it in instead of air . A little safer option is to take a small amount of gas poured in to like a cap or a oil jug or something and pour it straight in the carb .

I have an older version of that little John Deere that caught fire... I will never understand the reason for putting the muffler orientation such that is obstructed by the drop-down body. the body gets super hot from the exiting exhaust gases! also the presence of the body covering the muffler causes the exhaust gases to hang around. to me it just don't make sense

The motor has been changed on this. If you look closely you can see the exhaust pipe from the original muffler sticking out from below the engine. The engine cooling vent on the original 8hp would go out where this motors muffler is and exhaust would go out below the body and away into the blue yonder

If you are going to use ether, spray it while cranking the engine to prevent damaging the engine. Also ether removes the oil from the cylinder wall, so if it don't start, put some lube in there before it rusts.

A massive fire? My lawnmower was a massive fire. The throttle stuck while I was mowing downhill so I tried pulling out the key. The key was out and the engine was running so I just bailed off and watched it roll into a tree. The fire was spreading from the mower to a poison ivy bush so I had no choice but to i let it burn and to run away. I wasn't going to breath in that airborne poison ivy.

Get a HALON fire extinguisher, it will put out the fire just as easy, but without the monoammonium phosphate powder. You're wise, to clear that powder out of the engine, to protect the valve faces the seats, as well as the piston rings and cylinder walls. A HALON fire extinguisher would have saved you a lot of work, cleaning up the mess from all the powder. Another advantage is, that the fire extinguisher will work a second time, if need later. The powder fowls the seal in the ABC extinguisher valve, causing it to lose pressure, even though there's no loss of powder. Dry chemical extinguishers are a '1-time use only", then they need to be recharged, even if not empty. HALON doesn't do that. It's much more useful, if you regularly work with gasoline fueled engines.

The Deere runs like a....deere. It also burns like one. Adding fuel to the fire (no pun intended) it's running one of the most termperamental engines I have had the displeasure of once owning. Kohler Command Pro? Pretty good, Powermore? Runs like a Honda, because it copies one. Honda? Best running engines I ever had. Kawasaki? I can't really comment, I only had one, but it never ran well. Briggs? Mediocre at best, incredibly temperamental at worst. That includes the flat heads, and even Vanguard engines. I was never really impressed. Tecumsehs ran well for me too.

You clearly should not work on mowers! I like the fact that you had to show the camera the fire extinguisher before pitting the fire out!

I am not sure if your going to see this, but your extinguisher is on a recall list. If you still have it, call kidde. 800-880-6788. And if it’s defected, I don’t think it would be because you used it and it worked fine. If it is however, you will get a free one sent to your house. Also that is a K class fire extinguisher and that’s a kitchen class fire extinguisher.
