Thar era of B&S w/ the automatic chokes always seemed to benefit from taking the air cleaner off, putting a screwdriver in to prop the butterfly open, and then (sometimes) a shot or two of ether starting spray thru the wide-open butterfly. They weren't always the easiest to get started !

I know I should but I have a rover mower 20 years old can’t remember on hp but it has Briggs and Stratton engine, 4 stroke and she revs till it knocks with no problem, it’s 20 years old and I’ve never changed the oil once and it’s still full of oil I am surprised, sure she is a bit thirsty

Ha ha! I also have a 3,5 HP B&S lawnmower still in use as my only lawnmower which must be of similar age. Although I tried, I just cannot come right with an electric lawnmower - I love the freedom of movement of a petrol mower. Mine has been reconditioned once before which gave it a new lease on life. It is coming up for another refurbish again, but the body is busy falling apart, so will probably have to retire rather. The pull cord on it broke a few times already, so it now only takes me half an hour to replace the cord. One word of warning, after seeing a colleague nearly losing his toes when doing exactly what you did, I would not recommend starting a mower bare foot! They are not called accidents for nothing!

The oil should be up to 1/2" from the top. Set the throttle at fast idle for first start up. Then back it down as it warms up. Set the carb. for highest idle mixture. Then turn it in until it just starts to slow down. Replace the diaphragm. Check if the choke valve moves back and forth while cranking on vacujet or if the choke closes on automatic choke. If not it's the diaphragm and spring. Then it should open as the engine warms up.The governor spring may be weak if the engine bogs under load of high grass. Replace the diaphragm. It's drying out and not pumping enough gas. Check the leakdown to test rings, valves, and head gasket. It could have a leaking exhaust valve. That choke is manual and should be closed. It should flutter back and forth while cranking. If not it's the diaphragm or spring. Replace both. Remove the choke rod cover and check if the rod is disconnected.
