Most canister filters are set up completely wrong by the manufacturer. They have the sponges mixed up so the finer sponges are catching all of the crap first and making an absolute mess. Manufacturers do this so they can force you into purchasing new filter floss every month. Get your setup right and you will find the canister works far more efficiently

@@FKJ_WORLD yeah it's all specific to folk's needs and set ups. I get what blueman is saying, canisters are really good if set up right but it's still a case of one glove not fitting all hands. Your set ups a very different in many ways Raleigh so they'll not be ideal for you. Then you have folk at the other end of the scale who only use air sponge filters and that works fine for them. It's one of the wonderful things about this hobby that their is so much diversity and scope to personalise our systems eh?

one of the best filters for shear space for bio media. Tip: lose all of the sponges in the main body/trays and fill the trays with bio media only (cram them full). Put filter floss in top tray to polish the water. This will give you aprox 2.5kg to 3kg of bio media which will give you a complete full cycle in a 200l tank. (Ammonia, Nitrate and Nitrite removal). Also use 3 courser sponges (Pink ones available from most stores) in the top of the removable sponge tube and bottom 3 sponges should be the blue 'fine' ones you get with the filter. This will better filter the debris before it gets to the main body and also help with maintaining a good rate of flow.

Good review. I have been using a 600 Thermo for about 5 months now on a 250 litre tank and my pre filter collects about the same as your one, but does that in a week. The main canister gets checked every few weeks as I also have some fine filter wool in there that needs changing and it also has a fair amount of muck in the bottom even in that short time. But that is my only filter and perhaps I have mucky fish. And yes, the feet do occasionally pop out 😀

Hello brother. Need advice? I setup an Oase 250 for my 140 litre Axolotl tank. Please note, Ammonia + Nitrite is always 0. Nitrate 0 and PH 7.5. I also do regular water changes and never over feed. Furthermore, any lumps of waste and uneaten is siphoned out on a timely manner. I never feed messy foods but just hand fed earthworms, hikari carnivore pellets, strips of salmon and frozen bloodworms. Within 5 weeks of running (after cycling), I suffered am outbreak of Detritus worms which got into the gills of my Axolotls to cause much irritation and madness! So I then had to strip the tank and do a thorough wash down. Please note, both inlet + outlet pipes were set on full power and added seachem matrix + purigen into the Oase 250. Although the filter was set on maximum power, I wasn't impressed with the strength of the flow So where did I go wrong and any idea what caused the Detritus worms outbreak?

They are wonderful filters. Just a comment. I find the heater in the filter gets no deposit on at all but there is always some small deposit when in a tank.

The sponge selection is peculiar. The pre-filter is medium sponge and so will catch the vast majority of the crap in the tank. Then the main sponges are coarse, so anything they would have caught has already been caught up in the pre-filter.

Yeah it's a bit odd. The prefilter sponges really do prevent any waste getting deeper into the filter. The big sponges were vertually clean as was the fine sponge pad at the top. I'm thinking it may be as well to remove at least one of the tray sponges and replace with more biomeadia.

Hi Daniel again. Mate, I really need your advise again... You're super trustworthy so really appreciate your thoughts. I have a 200L tank on the way. I also purchased this filter, with the heater, the biomaster Thermo 350. I am planning to make a Planted aquascape, wood, stones, aqua soil, an assortment of fish (Medaka rice fish, rumy nose tetra, cardinal tetra, guppies, mollies, amano shrimp etc) My question is, would the 350 be enough in your experience to support my setup? Tank is 100cm wide, 40 cm deep, 50 cm tall. I keep being told, 350 is way too little and I should have gone for the 600 which is also "not enough" based on flow rates. You're apparently supposed to turn over your water x 10 the litres. So therefore I'd need a flow rate of 2000! And the 350 model is like 1100Land the 600 1250L. As you're someone who owns one. What do you reckon? Am I being sold snake oil? Is it just aqua scapers being elitist and going overboard with tech to show off? Or am I being correctly advised.

Okay firstly let me say in fishkeeping there are frequently different ways of doing things and differing opinions. Therefore it is hard to say what is right and wrong and I am not going to say the advice you have been given is wrong, all I can do is give you my opinion. Firstly let me point out there are people who keep entire fish rooms including some with big tanks that only use sponge filters. That should give us some perspective. As per 10x per hour yes that sounds right for some species but can you imagine the likes of a Betta in a tank with that amount of current? Big messy fish like larger Plecs and Goldfish I'd say need higher turnover rates like that but the smaller fish you intend to keep I'd say not so much. The Guppies in particular would struggle in that environment. Also taller plants could suffer in current that is too strong when you think about it. I'd say the minimum turnover we should aim for is about 4x. You are buying a filter rated at 5x based on your tank size for smaller fish with plants. I would be comfortable with that. The next thing to consider is how much media a filter holds. The 350 has space for plenty but then there is another issue. Are we being encouraged to buy and use more media than is necessary by manufacturers? I'm not saying yes or no but again years ago everybody used undergravel filters which utilised no additional media aside from the gravel in the bottom of the tank. The bacteria we need for a healthy aquarium grows on every surface in the tank so in addition to that as long as we stick to sensible stocking levels, are careful not to over feed and keep on top of our maintenance I would suggest the 350 provides ample space for biological filtration as well as plenty of mechanical too the way it is designed. I would swap out the plastic media you get with it like I did but yes I believe the filter you have bought for the type of fish you are going to keep you should be fine. I feel like you fall between each of the two options so folk saying the 600 would be better are right but folk who say the 350 (including the manufacturer) are right also. Cycle your tank. Add fish slowly so as to let the bacteria which manages the nitrogen cycle build up in proportion to the fish being added and test your water regularly. If you don't have a test kit (which are on sale on Amazon today) many fish stores will test water for you free of charge. If your parameters are in range and your tank looks clean you're good right? If you feel you need to you can also add a secondary filter at a later date but I'm thinking you should be fine. If it were my tank and I intended to keep the same fish and set it up the same as you intend to I'd have bought the 350.

No problem at all. I hope when you get it you are happy with it and therefore the opinion I offered. If you wouldn't mind me making a couple of suggestions... I'd do the maintenance on the pre-filter section weekly in the begining. As the sponges clog it slows the flow rate so you need to learn over time how often you need to do that. It only takes five minutes to do but just remember the more fish we stock and the more we feed the quicker the sponges will get clogged up. So do it weekly at first and if you find you can go longer do so gradually till you find the sweet spot as it were. Also you could upgrade at some point but another idea would be to add a second filter. Doesn't need to be another big one, maybe an internal like an Eheim Pickup or something else you find that you like. The reason I like to do that is because if one malfunctions for some reason you still have the other running on your tank till you can sort it out instead of no filter at all. I tend to do that with my heaters on bigger tanks for the same reason. Speaking of heaters I would keep a thermometer in the tank, even one of the cheap ones that stick to the glass with a suction cup. You can stick it near the back out of site or whatever just so long as you can check it from time to time. The reason I say that is I don't use the heater in the filter as you know but I'd worry that the water may be cooler once it gets to the tank than when it is heated inside the Biomaster. It may be necessary to set the dial a little higher so the water is the correct temperature for the fish in the tank. Maybe not. Just a thought that I've not tested but may be worth keeping an eye on it to see. Hope you enjoy your new tank and have lots of good times watching your new fish.

Hi Robin. There are three models: 250 which is rated for a 70G tank, 350 for a 90G and the 600 for 160G. Oase are a European company and the feedback I've had is they are not widely available in the US at this stage unfortunately. If one blips onto your radar I'd certainly consider grabbing it though. They really are very good.

Okay all I got a 350 on a 75 gallon tank with spiny soft shell turtles. Works great between it and the pleco. My question is about the bio media. How often does it need changed. Also, Somefolks put charcoal as well? Had it 6 months clean the pre once a week just did the main filters today.

Charcoal/carbon is great for soaking up waste chemicals but generally needs to be replaced around once per month. Which biomedia are you using? If it's the media that comes with the filter it should last a long, long time since it's designed to keep moving and doesn't gather enough waste to render it ineffective. If you are using ceramic rings most manufacturers recommend replacing half of it every six months. Personally with a good maintenance regime like the one you are operating I would say it would last much longer. I would say keep an eye on your water conditions, preferably with a master test kit or test strips if that's not possible. If your readings are good them your biomedia is still doing it's job. Hope that helps.

They are also very messy in terms of producing waste though which can lead to media getting clogged quicker and just because they can breathe air doesn't mean the chemicals aren't effecting them in other ways. They still come into contact with their skin and shell for example. Testing the water tells us a great deal but I get not everyone has the means to do it. You will know Turtles better than me, I have only been able to enjoy keeping them for a very brief period. If you keep an eye on their health and keep up your diligent filter maintenance regime there's no reason why the media shouldn't last a very long time. I would give it a rinse every time you do the main part of the filter and inspect it just to see visually how it's getting on. Enjoy your turtle tank. Such great wee characters.

I can't answer that one I'm afraid. I never used the internal filter. I already had heaters inside the tank that I liked and used the cap that blocks off the heater section instead. I'm sure others on KZbin who used the filter option will be glad to answer your question.

I don't believe so but it's a great idea. Wonder why they haven't done that. I know there were reports about the UV in Sun Suns effecting the plastic inside the filter, warping the filter trays, perhaps that's something to do with it. You should email them your idea though. I'd love to hear if they answer back with a reason or news they are working on it.

@@DanielKeepingFish UV is harsh on organic materials (plastics), but, i'm guessing that the actual amount of time the UV light needs to be on is minimal. They could solve that issue with putting a thin metal sleeve inside the aqueduct, or possibly even chrome plating the plastic. materials engineering is so amazing these days -- no reasons NOT to do do this. Also, solid state heaters are smaller than mechanical ones now. They could easily fit the HEATER and the UV in the same space. They could even make it modular. Make the heater take up the top half of the tube, and put the UV below it. or even put them side--by-side. Anyway. Fun idea.

Ah, thanks very much. No, no CO2. Most of the plants aren't demanding ones. I use a thin layer of clay based substrate under the gravel when I set my tanks up. After that it's just LEDs, water changes, liquid ferts a couple of times per week and the odd tab every now and then whenever I remember. Hope you enjoyed the review or found it useful at least.

I have Ramshorns in the tank I use this filter on. I frequently find lots of tiny ones inside when I'm doing my maintenance on it but that's no bad thing. Means they're further breaking down the waste in there. Haven't had any issues with snails getting jammed in the impeller or anything. Can always use a prefilter sponge on the intake pipe but somehow they always seem to get in anyway.

It's a wee bit hard to say. I know turtles can be messy and it will rely somewhat on things like how heavy you feed etc. What I will say is if you clean the pre-filter part regularly, the bit that pulls out you would be cleaning the main filter a lot less frequently than with other filters that don't have that feature. Cleaning the pre-filter only takes a few minutes compared to the amount of time and effort that goes into cleaning out a full canister filter. I'd start by cleaning the pre-filter once per week and dial it back gradually till you find the sweet spot that works for you.

@@molitorsk oh hey no worries and thank you for your kind comment. Yeah you can put a heater in these filters but I don't do it. My concern is that it heats the water inside the filter but the water may cool ever so slightly on it's journey through the pipe to the tank causing the heater to have to work a little harder than it should in order to maintain the temperature inside the aquarium. I'll be quick to say I haven't tested that. I'm sure the clever people who designed the filter did test it and were happy with results. A other draw back is you can't see the heater. As much as we hide them best we can I still like to be able to see the light coming on from time to time for reassurance. I also run digital thermometers which I can easily check to be sure the water is at the correct temp so really this is something I should probably get over, just a bit stuck in my ways with that maybe. The other issue is some people report a build up of waste around the heater when inside the filter but again I haven't tested that and I have spoken to folk who say it's fine. I hope that is some help.

@@molitorsk no trouble at all. I should have added when it is used with this filter it is held in place with the top part of the canister (the lid part with the motor etc inside). You need to be careful if you lift it off and set it down. Some people have forgotten the heater is sticking out of the bottom and smashed it.

I just picked up a 125 gallon tank for my turtle (she's still fairly small; roughly 4 inches diameter). Turtles tend to be a bit more dirty than fish, but do you think this canister system would be adequate and require a similar amount of maintenance at least until she reaches maturity and can share the tank with fish as well?

Well turtles are messy as you say but these are good filters, as good as any on the market. The beauty of them is the pre-filter section. I'd say if you keep on top of maintaining it (which only takes a couple of minutes) you'll be cleaning the rest of the filter out much less often and so would be a great option for your turtle.

There are three models Miguel. The 250 is rated for 900 l/h, the 350 1100 l/h and the 600 is rated at 1250 l/h so in gallons: 250 200gph 350 240gph 600 275gph.

No no, not necessarily. If you're using the plastic media that comes with it i think that should be used at the bottom. I changed mine to ceramic media. I prefer the sponges to catch the waste before it hits them and clogs them up which is why I flipped mine around. With our filters, like many things in our hobby there is often more than one way of doing things. With filter arrangement there are loads of options and everybody has their own preferred arrangement. If you're happy with your filter, if it's doing a good job and your water conditions are good I'd say leave it as it is.

@@DanielKeepingFish I've been playing about with my filter cause it suddenly seemed to stop working, there was nothing coming through the spray bar at all! So after seeing this i've been able to play about with it a bit to see why it wasn't working... turns out the impeller had snapped!

You can't regulate the flow from the canister, only by adjusting the valves on the pipes. You can buy those separately if you are missing them.

I have the OASE 350 in a 130L tank can’t say the flow that comes out of these filters is the greatest. Don’t see much plants swaying in the current possible spray bar too long 🤷‍♂️

Have you made sure the intake pipe is actually under the water line and primed it (used the priming pump to start sucking the water through to the filter)? Alternatively you can use the method which I'll post below this comment. If you have done all that start with making sure all the connections and seals are tight. Sometimes it's more thorough to take everything apart and start again. That way you're sure you've checked every part.

What you stated that, if you clean your pre-filter regularly, you can push your main filter maintenance by six months or so, is not a generalised correct statement. It all depends on what kind of a tank you are using this filter for. If you have moderate fish only tank with moderate plant load, you can probably get away by not cleaning the main filter for six months, but if you are running this on a heavily planted nature aquarium, its recommended to clean this filter after three months with pre filter cleaning every 2 weeks or so. I have a biomaster 600 and what i have observed is the main impeller catches lot of muck, which if not cleaned affects the flow of the filter and flow compromise is not a desirable thing in a nature aquarium. So even if your main media is not that dirty, you still need to clean the impeller after three months which means you are opening the main chamber anyways... Its better we do it every three months in a nature style tank

Impella', filta'. heata', prociga', tank wata', wira'. Love that accent. Where in the UK is that? That plastic media is totally worthless and Oase used it to cost cut. Use higher quality bio media with more surface area.

From the London area originally bud. Aye I changed the media out. Think there are uses for it like moving bed filters and so on but don't feel like it's the best use of space in this filter personally.

One thing you have to watch with these is don't put hard media in the top tray, as it can push against the top and prevent it from sealing properly.

After a couple of years no problem I have a snag. After cleaning the prefilter sponges I have a little trickle leak coming from , it seems, the front lip. Dismantled and checked everything but can’t find the problem. Anyone got any ideas?

Might be the rubber ring around the top that makes the seal especially if you haven't been lubricating it every once in a while. Also make sure your media in the top basket isn't too full pushing the lid up. Make sure it is coming from the lid too and not further up. If you've cleaned the pipes recently make sure you've got them back on right. Hope that helps.

I would just clean the pre filter in tap water, it's going to make little difference if the bacteria within it is temporarily compromised.

Yeah. I was just leaving that in as best practice kind of thing but you're right, you'll not loose too much bacteria when you consider what's available in the rest of the filter and the aquarium.

Yeah I changed it up and made two of the trays bio-media. They are great filters though. Love the pre-filter section. Such a neat idea and works well.

The pre filter foams are too fine just cut course and fine pond foam for bottom tray and floss rest of the trays bio media

I think they sell different grades of sponges that you can swap out but if you already have filter sponge laying about that's a nice easy option too for sure.

Honestly I hate comparing filters. Each have their reasons to be great and better than each other in different ways and every fish keeper will swear their preferred filter is the best. What I will say is if I were to be buying another canister filter tomorrow and I had to choose between Oase and Eheim, I'd be getting another Biomaster.

Don't buy this thing. It absolutely sucks. The mechanical air pump just doesn't work sometimes, no matter what you do. It just keeps making a broken noise(7:36) whenever you turn it on.
