I love this! I was lucky enough to be on board Drum a few times while docked. My dad & I once had a private tour with the skipper of the time in the mid 80s. Such a stunning Maxi

I was so lucky to see Simon in New Zealand back in 1986 when Drum stopped in Auckland . I walked with Simon and Yasmine along the main street of Auckland City until they went into a hotel . It was a very cherished memory and I had admired Simon for a long time .

Yeah, but where oh where, to which National Video Archive, has the original broadcasting tape gone? The video quality of this one is mud. Who produced this video? Where did they store all their tapes or their video editing project files? What is wrong with this world? Why are we all watching this muddy tape?!

IOR Maxis were the most aesthetically beautiful racing sailboats ever designed . They were pure power and grace .
@12345fowler6 ай бұрын
Yep, totally agree. Not only aesthetics but the whole race was such an equilibrium between men and nature. Long time at sea, numerous crew onboard with sometime dramatic moments and other moments enjoyable and crazy (crew taking a bath suspended by the spinnaker pole & other silly stuff when conditions permit etc.) There was a sense of humans at the mercy of the seas more than anything in the present days, because these boats altough there were bloody fast fo a monohull design, were slow enough that they were just at the mercy of the weather system thery were in. In todays races, multi-hull oats are so fast they can jump from one weather system to another one, they sail faster than the wetaher system itself lol. Not the same spirit.

And then came carbon fibre. And then came REAL computer power helping in design. And then came hydrofoils. And then finally the Medieval Eighties were a thing of the past. Gee, EVERYTHING was awkward in those years, was it? Even racing was without the special material materials, look at it, it looks exactly like a large touring yacht, nothing special, nothing fancy. That is WEIRD!
