The missing key change was deliberate and SO Lin. The emotion of the song built throughout, but we had a whole movie ahead of us. The emotions she was feeling didn't lend itself to a big key change. Her journey was just starting. Such an amazing song.

I feel like the reason it's almost...unfinished?... Like it is supposed to build up to something and it doesn't; is because Mirabel feels unfinished, she wants more, she feels incomplete because she isn't like her family, so the song reflects that.

Mirabelle sings “open your eyes” 4 times addressing Abuela in this song and this is then beautifully returned back to her when Abuela sings “open your eyes” once back to Mirabelle in the song “all of you”. this is the beautiful resolution to the angst and pain being expressed here, with Mirabelle realising her value. I love the "open your eyes" part, because Mirabel is begging her abuela to finally see she's hurting, later Alma herself asks Pedro "open my eyes, if the answer is here help me find it",, the movie itself starts with Alma speaking to Mirabel in spanish and then she says in english "open your eyes",,, and at the end, during All of you, she again tells Mirabel "open your eyes" and asks "what do you see?" to which she answers "I see me" because all Mirabel ever wanted was to feel seen.

It occurs to me, when youre discussing how you're expecting a key change, that the story of Mirabel at this point is building to something Bigger (a Gift) but ultimately/temporarily being let down. The build to key change and then the denial could be a musical representation of that tension. The fact that she holds the song strongly on its original key to me indicates that Mirabel is truly enough as she is, miracle or no.

I swear the restraint on the key change was to put you in that frustrated space right with Mirabel. She’s waiting for a miracle and as the song crescendos it _keeps teasing_ the key change and never delivering. How many nights must little 6-yr-old, 9-yr-old, 12-yr-old Mirabel have been staring at the nursery room ceiling wondering when she would be worthy of the recognition of her abuela, only to be disappointed each time. It puts us fully in her headspace so that we’re distracted by how sad she is when suddenly the pain her sisters and family are feeling can surprise us. It’s truly well crafted as a musical story.

I love this song. First off sad that no one seems to notice her missing even her parents… The first freeze frame and how she interacts with the rest of the family (holding pepas rainbow? 😢) and then repeating the “I can’t” phrases with “I would” phrases that actually are things she ends up doing or influencing throughout the movie (I would move the mountains- they crack open- make new trees and flowers grow - through what else can I do which Isabella even says she owes it all to Mirabelle - heal what’s broken - more mental/family turmoil - show this family something new/ who I am inside…) And then I just tear up at the second freeze frame when she goes back into the house, which seems to me like her ideal everyone is around me and look how PROUD they all are. For a split second she is in the center of that half circle with Antonio cheering and everyone else even Abuela so proud. Love this song. So great to belt in the car with no one around. 😊

I've seen other people saying this is Mirabel's Let it Go - moment. But it isnt! this is not a I-am-free song. This is like the end of "Wait for it" or "burn" when she is struggling because she cant do anything. She is a woman with kids and her reputation has been drag but she is in era where she has no voice. What Lin does so great is he understands internal power struggle.

Oh yeah the voice actor was waiting on a miracle when she recorded this song she was like 9 months pregnant have the baby soon days after Edit oh she was in labor when she was recording this song she just didn't tell anyone cuz she didn't want him to worry so it was not days later it was hours Lin-manuel Miranda wanted this to be a different type of Disney song so he made the timing like a waltz and told the voice actor to sing it as such

Well this isnt the first Disney movie that have such an amazing songs with touching your heart and soul, but for me after one watch this movie went on my personal top 10 on second place imidiately. First will always be Hunchback of Notre Dame, still remember being 12 i 1996 sitting in the cinema and when that amazing score starts my tears just started to falling.

I agree. There are songs like “reflection“, and “part of your world“ which are emotional and full of longing. But this is the first one where the emotions are not pretty, and they’re blatant, and there for everyone to see. All the heavy breathing that she’s doing at the beginning in particular, and the urgency and some of her phrases where she really repeats certain phrases over and over and over. That was well done.

Great musical analysis! Since you've commented on how it feels like Disney is doing something new, I'll just say I wouldn't call it a real departure so much as a deepening of an emerging trend with Disney. I feel like they've been examining trauma since Moana, but they've just refined that strategy. Encanto feels like it just went a step further than its predecessors in that trauma is really the impersonal star and the villain of the whole piece. You can compare Encanto to Coco, for example, which explored similar themes. Coco is also about the importance of family, the impact of familial trauma, and what alienation from our histories can do to you. It's also a story about reconciliation. But with Encanto, the trauma of the family is always in focus, and there isn't a villain like DeLaCruz. The bad guy is literally what happened to them - Alma is definitely redeemed by the end. I really appreciate this trend, like you. Very humanizing art.

The key change you want is excluded on purpose. The audience is left wanting for something in the track even if we cannot identify it. Just like Mirabel if left wanting. The audience like Mirabel is left waiting for something that isn’t going to happen. I love this song but it honestly gets sadder every time you hear it because you know Mirabel is always going to be left waiting.

This song is one of my favorites comes in a close tie with What Else Can I Do. because I relate to Mirabel and Isas characters the most. feeling like an outcast in my family feeling like I can't live up to my sibling's achievements and feeling like I have to be perfect. Lin really delivered with this song and this soundtrack and the story crew and animation crew did a beautiful job making an instant Disney classic. i can never not almost cry singing this too I swear. this song along with Dos Oruguitas are both ballads! IMO Dos Oruguitas is the best song in the movie (bc it’s in spanish and i’m latino so i can resonate with it more) you should react to it:) It’s also the saddest so beware !

I really love that it didn't traditionally resolve. It felt so intentional, because none of her problems had even been acknowledged, let alone had movement towards being solved. The lack of key change, the lack of a more traditional ballad resolution was such an intense musical representation of where Mirabel was actively at. It's actually one of the things I really liked about Encanto: all of the songs break musical tropes in the pursuit of better representation of where the characters are at. And it's just done phenomenally.

Encanto broke so new ground visually. For the longest time Disney animators restricted how much emotion their heroines could show because they didn't want any unattractive faces. They always had to stay pretty. In Encanto Mirabel constantly does silly and angry faces. Young Abuela's heart wrenching cry at the loss of Pedro was so powerful. Imagine if that was scaled back to keep her "pretty". They're also better at showing age in women. It's not just the evil middle-aged women who show their age beyond being plumpler; Pepa has wrinkles and Julieta has gray hair.

Waiting on a Miracle is done in more of a waltz type where the beat is 1,2,3,1,2,3 Every other song is a four beat. 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4 It is hinting that Mirabel feels out of beat with her family. Even in the family Madrigal Mirabel sings in triplets while Alma sing standard 4. Alma is like this 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4 However Mirabel sings like this 1-2-3,4-1-2,3-4-1,2-3-4 However to truly understand why this is critical you have to listen to dos Oruguitas

You know what makes me love this song even more? I read somewhere that while filming this song stephanie beatriz was pregnant and had started going into labour but carried on singing without telling anyone cause she didnt want anyone to freak out, she just belted this out and then went to the hospital like it was nothing and it makes me love this song so much more than I already did.

I think we turned a corner with Frozen 2, bc there are a good amount of songs in there with vulnerability and real emotions, and with interesting styles that weren't typical of Disney, and I think that naturally led to the explosively different Encanto and its success. I hope we stay on this track because this style of making Disney musicals is really awesome, as good as previous movies obviously were, I'm excited for the future of Disney musicals and movies.

for the key change this isn't the high point of the movie this isn't ment to be that sort of uplifting triumphant song like so many disney songs its a "I want" song but from someone whose Moment to get the thing they want has past and the whole point of this is summed up by the line "hey I'm still part of the family Madrigal" because she's feeling left out and neglected and as if she doesn't shine or have value in the family because she doesn't have a gift even though both her father and uncle are included in the photo despite also not having gifts

I feel like that the reason there isnt that break through you were describing is because of jealousy and uncertainty. Mirabel throughout this movie questions why she is in the madrigal and if she deserves to be there along people who have these amazing gifts. She is jealous of her older sisters and the rest of the family cause they are praised so often. This jealousy doesn't usual stop till something happens to stop it or at least help it. This song is her questioning and her jealousy. Note its not a toxic jealousy but its wanting jealousy. The break you were talking about would probably represent the musical representation of something happening, and thus, the jealousy and the questioning ends.
