The best part is later Braun said, basically, "I was in the right spot for our defense. But Jokic instantly saw that we needed to adjust." That is, he wasn't correcting a CB error; he just saw what needed to change and did it on the fly. Jokic is on another level.

Late 80s maybe. If you’ve been watching since the early/mid 80s you’d know that Joker and Larry Bird have very similar court vision, passing styles, and ability to read defenses. Bird was a better shooter and rebounder (when healthy). They have different body types though and Joker is much more powerful, so he can create offense on his own in ways that Bird could not.
@PhilDavisplus
@PhilDavisplus 4 күн бұрын
@JG-zs8tr, have you noticed Jokic doesn't jump high? He doesn't need to; he has long arms and super strong mitts. The jumping part is where injury happens most. So, this is one reason Jokic stays healthy.

That's why Jokic is an underrated team defender and elite at drop coverage defense. He was ranked 5th in total deflections in the 2023-2024 season. His biggest weakness on the defensive end is his "rim protection", but that's why the signing of AG has helped mitigate that weakness.

This is the basic thing they teach you in Europe, reading the floor and knowing when to stop the action with the foul. If you watch Euroleague games or Serbia at the Olympics for example, nearly every single foul is preventing a transition play or if a player gambles and loses or gets beat and they don't want to give up the advantage. This is a very underrated part of basketball and difficult to see when watching, but if you pay attention to that sort of thing you will notice when players are elite at reading the game like Jokić is

His long strides make him deceivingly fast and even on his pump fake dribble drives he looks slow but somehow uses decels to his advantage kind of like what luka does. It looks so unorthodox and yet he creates the same results as a guard that can stop and go in pnr. I know this was a video about his defense but that example still illustrates how elite his body control is at around 300 pounds.

Conditioning and athleticism are not the same thing. Jokic has great conditioning. He's also a great athlete, though not in all aspects. His verticality and lateral quickness are weak by NBA standards, but his hand eye coordination and footwork are phenomenal, as is his vision. He's huge but knows where every limb is at all times. He's the opposite of the clumsy big guy. His strength is also very high, but that is more like conditioning than athleticism.

Joker is the reason that Westbrook is now a Denver Nugget. His basketball IQ extends even to off the court things. When Russ was signed fans everywhere were laughing & the so-called experts in the media were calling this a questionable move. But Nikola knew what he would bring & how he'd fit in. I have no doubt that this front office & coaching staff consult with him on player personnel moves. I think that can be seen in how they draft as well. This guy is the true MVP of the NBA every year until he decides to retire...hopefully way into the future.

Jokic is a great defender. People get fooled because he generally doesn't block shots at the rim in order to keep himself out of foul trouble. He could have big block numbers if he wanted, but the trade off is not worth it. He had a few years in the past where foul trouble would consistently mitigate his impact down the stretch of games. Now he consistently provides high level impact on both sides of the ball.

The block is one of the coolest things in basketball and blocking someone is an awesome feeling. Still, blocks is really a pointless stat. It says nothing about how the play ends. If you block a shot twice but the attacker makes the shot on the third try it means nothing. Contesting and boxing out doesn't show up on the boxscore.

I remember Khris Middleton doing the exact same thing vs Mavs 2 years ago on the final play of the game. Khris see's what the play is that Mavs are about to run he tells Jrue whats up knowing the play Khris started it covering Luka for a switch to Jrue. Luka see's that Khris and Jrue know what they are running and tries to get Kidd and change the play but they aren't paying him any attention. Mavs inbound the ball and sure enough Bucks were ready and Khris switches on the pick to Jrue and Luka is forced to take a contested fadeaway 3pt shot that never has a shot. Luka was so pissed he just stormed off to the locker room after he missed the shot. If you'd like to see the play just search for "Luka Was Mad The Bucks Knew The Mavericks Play". Khris has underrated BB IQ.

Blocks have always been the dunks of defense imo and are always better for a highlight reel HOWEVER: Yes they both can necessary in the sense that something good happens when they’re successful. They can also both not be necessary in the sense that there are other ways to get a defensive stop (steal, forced turnover) or a score (layup, easy floater, pass to a teammate under the rim) that have the same impact on the game. Jokic not having a ton of blocks doesn’t equate to him being a bad defender at all. Clearly this cognitive ability that can force turnovers is where he makes up for his lack of blocks. It’s just that there’s no stat for cognitive ability to force a stop. But regarding stats he does have steals to show for something but we all know that individual basketball stats are not something Jokic cares about entirely. Blessing we have him in the league right now his IQ is beautiful to watch in action.

But I'm aware Communist yugoslavia had relationship with the west and didn't let Stalin tell them what they can and can't do. It's a damn shame yall could not get along with one another because a yugoslavia and usa rivalry in olympicswould of been epic

My god the fact that we cannot put together a good roster behind jok pisses me off so much the man literally makes every player better. We’re nearing the point that anyone other than CB, AG or Jok can be traded. Jamals regressing hard and as of rn him and Mpj are not worth anywhere near the money they’re making and its fucjing us hard in the new luxury tax system. Russ get tf off my team, Jamal stop forcing shots, Mpj make some fucking shots, and FOR FUCK SAKES GET AN ACTUAL SHOOTER MAN. ITS 2024 HOW THE HELL CAN YOU NOT GET A SHOOTER IN A LEAGUE FULL OF SHOOTERS. WHY IS DEANDRE JORDAN TAKING UP A ROSTER SPOT WHY DOES JULIAN STRAWTHER NEVER SET HIS FUCKIN FEET BEFORE SHOOTING YOU ARE NOT STEPH CURRY MY BOY SET YOUR FUCKIN FEET. I experience nothing but pain watching my team actually accomplish something for the first time in my life and instantly within 2 seasons be in back to back overtime games with terrible teams.

the youngsters will gain experienceand make a difference. strawter, waston and cb are legit players. Hunter play with intensity, he might figure it out in the second half. all those guys are playing fast and with alot of energy. Thats what you need around a cerebral genius.

Wow 🎉I've seen Lebron do the same thing..he may not be as fast as before..but he reads plays and tells teammates what to do or where to stand..and like Joker hes not telling everybody..hey..im the 1st comment..🎉🙄..to be able to stop a plays before they can set up..is another reason why he's a 3×MVP

No Jokic IS A GOOD defender because of his ability to read opposing offenses, this is what I can’t stand most when people say Curry is a bad defender too when in reality he understands opposing offenses as well and is always pointing and communicating with the rest of his team when to switch or not to and where you should be positioned while playing defense, Jokic does the same thing
@VinceLyle2161

Bird used to do this. He'd make up for his defensive deficiencies by understanding what the other team was trying to do. That, and playing an illegal zone defense.

all we need is watson and braun to step into the roles and perform and we will have a second title in denver. theres a lot of games left, so hopefully they just keep growing. those two are going to define this season. can you please stop calling him brown. its braun. think the paper towel. brawny. minus the y.

Saying "Jokic isn't a great defender' is like saying "Jokic isn't a great athlete" People are paying attention but don't know how to articulate what they are seeing - it's a prejudice. He is an AMAZING-all-time-great defender and an exquisite athlete. He sees everything and his body does what is required to adjust to what he sees. If he gets beat on a play it's because it's not humanly possible to be in five places at once
