Verbal instruction is so subjective. "Spin the right shoulder down" "Spin the forearm down"...The cross-handed swing seems to demonstrate the movement Mr.Cowan wants from the right arm. "Spinning the forearm down" . Spinning is not twisting, is that correct?

This video is beyond anything I’ve seen yet. I practiced these for a few days and then granted, it was on a sim. But played at my buddies house, where I normally score high 80’s to mid 90’s and hit a 77. It felt like nothing I’ve done before, I’m not quite getting the distances I’d like yet, as I’m not able to always keep that compression. But getting to the green in regulation or at least having a solid chance is something I’ve never been able to do until this. I hope it stick and I continue to improve. It’s amazing that 3 years of playing and watching videos and this felt like it just completely unlocked the swing.

Danny your first video with Pete Cowan really changed my short game, I love his philosophy, and being a Yorkshireman myself his dry Yorkshire wit “just like yer messin around” !! In his chipping and pitching lesson ( which I re-visit often) there are some absolute jewel’s of information and this video is the same, my coach is a strong advocate of compressing the ball and to do this, by exiting the swing left. I have always realized that keeping the right elbow into the body creates a consistent swing leading to a more powerful compression and pure strike, but the question I always asked myself was how to get the feeling, one thing I tried to do was to feel as if I was hitting out of my right trouser pocket!! I’ll be leaving early tomorrow to drive back to the UK and spend a month around the Leeds area and Hopefully to get a round or two out at your Dads course Scarthingwell before I return to Spain! It’s not about humility - it astonishes me how many people are too stubborn to accept help from others and dismiss them through arrogance and stubbornness who won’t listen to anyone who may be correct about an issue they argued passionately their opinion could not be wrong - these people are the biggest waste of oxygen to mankind - if you have any sort of IQ you understand that knowledge comes in part from others - if you were going into a quiz and people have answers to help you - why on gods earth would you dismiss this or turn it down? An intelligent person listens to every single piece of info they can and strengthen their knowledge, I’ve seen people dismiss opinions before they’ve spoke because they do not have the intelligence to be able to understand that genius comes from learning from as many sources as possible to bolster their knowledge, I would listen to ten people of any age on a subject and take each piece of advice and internally dismiss what I feel is not helpful but give a chance! The next thing they might say may help me greatly - I just don’t get why anyone would want to be thicker for not being able to accept others views that may have just one thing that helps you massively. The best example - tiger woods has a coach - the best player ever listens to knowledge from someone who most the world don’t know!

After spending some time hitting balls yesterday, my interpretation of “spinning the right arm down” is the upper arm remains glued to the torso and it is the forearm that “spins” down to the ball. At the same time the right wrist remains in flexion (wrist cock). It is the correct body turn that squares up the face. Think of it as the right arm “uncocks” at the elbow applying force and pressure to the back of the ball. It is amazing how far you can hit a ball with a short backswing, cocked wrist and a little timing.
@DanielMaude Жыл бұрын
That’s correct Randy
@michaelgonzalez69716 ай бұрын
Thanks. The "spin" term was confusing me also. I'm still not sure I see how the spinning is limited to the forearm. What seems to give me the best result feels like the right forearm, with wrist cock maintained, drops against the back of the ball as my upper body turns and clears. I wonder if I have it right.

I would like to say a couple of things about this as well as give a WARNING: First of all kudos to Danny for letting us see that he too is constantly seeking to improve his swing which shows that golf is a never ending journey. Secondly; it was a brilliant instructional video and probably the best I have seen. No nonsense, brutally to the point and lead me to have a new understanding of how to properly compresses the ball. I was so inspired I went straight out into my garden and started doing these practice methods. At first I just hit the ball fat, and I mean really fat and for the first time I understood just how much hand manipulation I was doing. Really scary revelation. After about an hour my brain got a glimpse of what was going on and I started to get a feel for it. When my brain "got it" it made the swing seem very simple and I was getting amazing power even from just half swings. I can kind of understand now why John Rahm does a very short backswing, the compression you get is incredible. Now here's the WARNING; Once your brain understands this and you get the feel of it; it is very very difficult to go back. After a couple of hours of getting the feel of this swing I tried my old swing again and it suddenly felt weak and had no power. If felt like I was guessing and that I had always been guessing. So if you try this method in any serious way it could be that you have to commit to it, of which I now have. I have a feeling my 11 handicap will go higher for a while but over time I believe it will fall dramatically. This knowledge is a revelation!
@steveperryman8102 Жыл бұрын
If you want your handicap to drop simply obsess with the short game instead of the golf swing. lol. Funny but true, this lesson was given by Lynn Blake years ago. He of the Golf Machine fame. This video is the truth of it. I did this drill just one time to get a feel of the right arm position and then just duplicated on my load. It does feel awkward at first but by the end of a bucket of balls it was pretty much muscle memory. Both my distance AND most importantly my consistency were instantly improved. I can drop 18 of 20 balls on the green in good position from 50 yds. I'd been lucky to do that with 5 of 20 before. Keeping that right elbow close to your body is what allows me to be consistent and also forces my body into the shot. Its almost like your mid section, abdomen and right arm become one allowing you to consistently use your body. will promise anyone who tries this technique whether, rookie or veteran golfer, their consistency and distance will improve. Thank you for this invaluable video!

The very last seconds of the video were gold. That’s exactly how I felt. I was throwing and turning it down early, so it’s a nice draw. As long as I keep turning, it’s a right to left on every shot, but turning it down with my forearm just provides better compression. I Can hit little punch shots without throwing it early and it really becomes my “straight shot”. A little over drops right, a little under drops left. The part that was hard to figure out is when he talked about “swinging down and into you.” I took that to mean, swinging left past the ball…versus letting hands work out away from your body (like hitting to the second baseman).

Excellent information! Coach Cowen definitely understands the golf swing. He is a great taskmaster but I grew up with and received taskmaster tutelage in the military so I am used to this instructional process and it works. I begin every practice session by striking pitch shots with only my right hand. This forces me to use my forearm correctly otherwise I couldn't strike the ball solidly at all. This gets me back in touch with the proper impact position. Once can't flip or early release with this drill. That's how I get the club head face turned down onto the ball. I learned the importance of impact work by years of watching a senior tour player (at the same range I used) begin each practice session by spending 20 to 30 minutes on achieving solid impact with short pitch shots. At times he would even slip on one of those crazy golf shirts to get the feel of achieving impact pressure and shaft lean properly. Peter (and many coaches) uses terminology that needs to be interpreted correctly. "Spinning the right forearm down" is something I understand only because I have already learned how to do what he described. If I was still early releasing like most of us do, I might struggle with his terminology. As golf students, our job is to put in the work so we can connect the dots from good instruction and apply it to our individual swing form.

@@stevecampbell5928 Same concept to apply pressure by accelerating your right arm speed from your right waist all the way through to finish. The only difference is that your driver swing path would be flatter and more around your body. And of course you stand much further from the ball than the iron hitting down more vertically.

Thank you for sharing. I'd already been working on similar but this really clicked. I had an uphill 160 yesterday, blustery day. Pin tucked right behind wide bunker. I rehearsed then struck the compressed fade with a thin 8-9" divot after the ball. Hit left green mid/low cutting and then spun sideways another 6ft. behind the bunker to 12ft. May have been the best feeling iron shot I've ever hit.

This is the third time I've watched this and it's still the fastest 36 minutes of all time. At 21:50 there certainly is a key, "I want the inside to keep turning to stabilize the outside"; it may not be the the only key but it is part of what makes an accomplished striker of the ball. This one thing will comprise a major part of my future practice sessions and will be a prime swing key when playing.

Hi Danny, I went to the range yesterday. Stated as you said nice and easy until I thought I was getting there. Full swing was 156 with a 7 iron into a S.W wind. Every club was a much better contact 👌 Flight was small draw. Came away very happy. I'll keep going as I have a habit of going after the ball and this swing felt so smooth

Danny, awesome awesome lesson. I’m a 9 handicapper who has spent a lifetime playing high weak fades with an open club face. Watched your session with Pete 3 times. First 10 balls, spinning the right forearm and letting the body react, turning the club face down on the ball. Compression! Cheers.

I always come back to this video as a memory refresher as I continue to burn this turning down the right forearm into my stock swing. I now realize that the absolute key to having this action brought to its full positive impact is one specific point Pete makes right at the 21:50 mark. Turn the inside to stabilize the outside. He is 100% spot on and you can feel this CLEARLY when properly executed. Everything is different right down to the sound created on contact in the ball strike. Even with low power input, it feels like a powerful strike. Very cool sensation and one you truly get it, this is beautifully repeatable. 👍🏻😎👍🏻

This is absolute DYNAMITE 🧨 I watched this lesson before heading out for a round. I’ve been in purgatory for absolute months with my game. Trying all sorts of quick fixes (which I know isn’t the answer). This is by far so relatable both visually and mechanically to do. I play off 3 but it’s been more like 23 for months. Went out and shot 4 over today with this feel and really working on it. I’ll take this to the range and graft this into muscle memory now. Best advice in such a long time!! Well done, Maud! 🎉

As a person who has the right elbow get too far behind the body and separated from the left at the top of the swing (because it feels powerful), this lesson is golden. So much easier to believe a swing theory/lesson when it's taught by one of the great instructors who has seen everything in the golf swing. Really like Pete's direct approach.

Super awesome feedback and instruction on what the right side does. That pressure from the right forearm is the money and the power. Makes so much sense too since the right hand is dominant in a right-handed player playing right-handed. The cack-handed drill to get the feels and movements correct and repetitive is great. I think the key is starting with the short hip high shots to get the feel for it in a slower swing. This is outstanding that you have done this Danny, thank you for your humility and for sharing this. Thank you, Pete for this great instruction.

Watched this video 10+ times and counting. So helpful. In trying to maintain this right forearm pressure, I'm finding that my grip that I used going into watching the video lacks the stability to maintain right forearm pressure. So in turn, I've been fine tuning my grip to find the sweet spot that helps to maintain stable and effortless right forearm pressure. Such a transformative video- THANK YOU!!

Loved the kack handed drill…it completely changed how I was thinking about the trail arm position and action and simplified the movement. At first, pressuring the downswing worked great, then I hit low duck hooks…then it clicked and I could hit as hard as I wanted through the ball with my right hand and get a low hard flight. Normally, if I hit hard with the right, I get a high hook…flipping. The driver felt like a sledgehammer right out the middle of the face. So, it works great on the range! Now to take it to the course. It took about 80 balls on the range, so I should “click” on the course on hole #14. 😮😊. I started rationing my KZbin videos as I was filling my head with crap, but I am so glad I watched this one. Thank you, Danny.

This popped up on my feed this morning. This is exactly what I've been working on for the past month. Pete's explanation of the right forearm rotating down while maintaining wrist conditions was eye opening. I've been wondering for quite some time how the pros are able to have their wrist conditions as such at impact. I've tried that motor pattern quite a few times and could never understand how they did it. I wasn't rotating my forearm. Pete's ability to voice what needs to happen in the simplistic way he does is a massive reason he is regarded as the top teacher in the game.

..yeah good teaching is very dependent on verbal range and accuracy

I still don't understand how one rotates the forearm without the wrist rotating with it. Can you explain specifically what you mean?
@industrialpalletworx35485 ай бұрын
@WindigoMac you can't physically rotate the forearm independent of the wrist. Squaring the clubface is done through the rotation of the forearm. I wasn't rotating that portion of my arm. I was trying to rotate the upper arm to achieve the proper wrist conditions. Rotating also takes the flip of the wrist or hands out of it. The rotation of the forearm is way more consistent as well. Trying to time up the flip consistently is nearly impossible

I have tested the new technique. Brilliant! I got additional distance, and it's so much smoother and requires less effort. Now I got the new concept. The right palm degree and extend my arm to create the feeling. Threw away my decade of old swing and no turning back. You are the man !

Great video! 2 questions: 1. You might need to explain the spinning of the right forearm in another video. Does he mean losing the pre-set flex and extending the elbow? 2. Does the same principle apply to driver, as this seems to geared more to short-mid irons and hence better compression. Not sure how this would work when trying to hit a driver on the up? (If that makes sense?!) Thanks as always!
@darrelmorben6307 Жыл бұрын
Danny - I was going to ask you to explain “spinning the right forearm” in a future video as well. I’m not sure how to spin the forearm without turning the hands…. Thanks @ameetpatel

I wondered about the driver too. I had pinned my right elbow in on my takeaway this year to get rid of a tiresome slice but once in a while I'd rip a big slice or hook and thought it had to do with my downswing. Saw this video and went to the range today. It's not an easy move but I was able to start seeing improvement in accuracy within the first bucket and maybe a little improvement in distance. It got easier by the 2nd bucket. I changed my grip a tad by moving my right hand down so that it was facing the target at impact. I think this is going to work and I'll try this Tuesday in my senior league scramble and try to let you know how it turned out.
