It always seemed silly to me when chaos is portrayed as ambivalent towards good and evil, as in chaos worshippers deluding themselves into actually being the good guys or at least not evil, it's like the meme of that British comedy show where the nazi guy says "are we the bad guys?".

Horus: "There is no good and evil, only the cosmos and the warp" Also Horus: "We need to kill the emperor, he's evil" Yeah chaos corruption has given him the power of copium
@62sy4 ай бұрын
What is meant here is that Good and evil is subjective. Anything… can be Good or Evil it either is part of everything or it doesn’t exist. And “everything” is neither good or bad. It simply is. “Epistemological revelation” those words are a perfect description of what Horus means. Tho not completely relevant to good and evil being subjective, the said statement is arguably a Derivative idea of certain epistemological thinking. Mainly relativism and more specifically epistemic relativism. Epistemology deals with the theory of knowledge(epistemic specifically is about what can be counted as knowledge). And relativism deals with subjectivity. So “epistemic relativism” is basically a statement of “all knowledge is subjective”. You can break it down in 3 main points: Reality: The external world exists, but any understanding or interpretation of it is not universal or objective. Knowledge is subjective: What we call “knowledge” is shaped by individual experiences, perceptions, and cultural or social contexts. Since each person’s perspective is inherently partial and limited, no single viewpoint can claim absolute truth. Partial experience: Each individual’s knowledge is just a fragment of the whole, influenced by their personal background, biases, and the particular circumstances in which they encounter the world. So what Horus is saying here is: “there’s only everything and every extrapolation from the great whole such as good or evil, is merely an individual’s derivative subjective experience of the the said greater whole”.

Pre-heresy, mind you, Big E was just fine with the absolutely-not-horrific antics of the Night Lords, World Eaters, and Death Guard. Big E was tolerant of those evils just so long as their guns weren't pointed at him.
@62sy3 ай бұрын
@@Mr.LaughingDuck death guard were not especially violent. Nigh lords killed the least amount of people to bring worlds under compliance. They killed a few dozen people and broadcasted their horrific deaths as a threat to the planet. Forcing compliance. World eaters were only sent to enemies that needed to be destroyed. They weren’t sent to take over worlds, but rather kill Xenos or humans who couldn’t make peace with the imperium. The legions were used as precise tools for each job. And only in most fire of circumstances did they become a hammer.

By far my favourite primarch. However, it isn't just his seflessness, heroism and honesty that draws me in but also the opposite side of his coin. The red thirst and black rage are two deeply unholy traits he bequeathed unintentionally onto his own sons. He has the right blend of both ploar opposites of love and hate. Ultimately I want to believe he is good. His humility and kindness to all of mankind is commendable, but his empathy and regret of what his sons inherited from his gene seed is what truly resonates with me and his desperation to relieve them of his genetic curses. Sanguinius is truly special and the most inspiring of all characters in all of the 30/40K lore in my humble opinion. He is a large part of the reason why I read the novels and absolutely love 30K horus herasy novels the most. Legion of the damned is something special for those who have not read it yet, fantasticly written by Guy Hayley.

Do you mean The Lost and the Damned? I love the Sanguinious chapters, where we get to read about the Angel and how much he loves flying. Where he also talks about how his wings work and how he control every part of them like we control our fingers, how if a bird had his wings it would have a massive convex sternum, but for some reason he still has a perfectly chiseled human (albeit Primarch sized) chest.

I love the manic inner monologuing. Horus is so bothered by Sanguinious, he decides to rationalize everything. He is being merciful. Indulging. Convincing himself that he is just so stupendous that everyone else is pretending to fight. He is not even self aware enough to know he is seeing the absolutely desperate attempt of someone who used to love you, to stop you. So inured into your absolutely corrupt frame of mind war gaming how you can stop it. Craving that validation. Only to gain victory by losing that haughty temper and flogging your object of obsessed projection like a child breaking a toy. We are watching Sanguinious trying his best to defy a fate he knows is certain, alongside horus pretending he has already not surrendered a fight he deluded himself into being winnable.

The only thing I don't like of how the fight went on is that there's nothing nodding to the old myth of Sanguinius managing to at least open a breach in Horus' armor so that the Emperor was able to beat him. In part 3 Sanguinius' death has no consequence in the battle between Horus and the Emperor, his body only serves to give Leeto something to do. As epic ans tragic as it was, it did nothing to the narrative of Horus vs the Emperor.

@ratelvora80145 ай бұрын
@@matiasyannuzzi9655 Horus seems a little more human, a little more himself when he fights his father. It is very heavily hinted throughout the entire Heresy and especially during the final fight, that there is still a shard of the true Horus somewhere within the monster, the vessel of evil that he has all but entirely become. Not because the False Four were unable to tear it apart from his flesh, that they wished to wear, or because it was beyond their ability to extinguish, but because they need it. They require something real, something bonded to the body of matter in order to anchor themselves within the material universe. More than just flesh, more than just a body, but a concious mind, a living heart in which they can hammer their nails and borrow the barbs of their malevolence. All so that they have enough of a hold on our plane to drag the impossible mass of their selves/power out of their own realm and into the home of mortals. A mind that can give their falseness and their shadow form and direction, a heart that can receive their lies and which can be tricked to will them into reality, into being and that may hold the power they fill its owner with together. That is why they cannot simply wear some doll, mortal, or maschine, crafted or born in order to confront their only true foe. Why it had to be a primarch and why Horus was the best choice available to them, for his will was amongst the strong even compared to his brothers. They are creatures of the warp and thus do not possess the same clarity of being as actual living entities. Darkness, evil, the craving for souls and whatever else they each embody lie at the core of what in a mortal would be the self for each of the quartet of ruin, not a truly thinking mind. Such is enough for beings whose power dominates the realm they inhabit by the mere presence of it, but on its own fares poorly in a realm of matter, even when drenched in as much unbeing as the Vengeful Spirit and the Lupercal Court. But the advantage of a vessel with a feeling heart, even one poisoned and mutilated, leaves a weak point within their armor of infinite power, one that the death of Sanguinius widens and which He masterfully and ruthlessly exploits. That weak point of course being Horus' remaining love and sentiment. Horus' interludes within all of the three volumes of The End and the Death are uniquely written in second-person narration. This was early on called out by fans, as being likely chosen to convey either Horus's self-inflicted madness, or the fact that Horus is almost completely dominated by the will of the four Chaos Gods, with them quite literally telling him what to feel, to think and to do (or both, of course). This was also my first take on it. But that has changed after rereading certain passages from TEatD volume II and III. There are several passages within the Horus interludes of each book, wherein this second person narrator speaks of Horus' thoughts and feelings in a manner that would make no sense if it were the will of the Ruinous Powers speaking. Passages like: "You have saved the human race, or what remains of it. Remember that. You had to mash the skull of your helpless father into the floor to do it, but ugly deeds are the price you pay when the cause is just. Your own father. You try not to dwell on that part. You try not to think of Him that way. You try to forget the bond you once had, the thirty glorious years, or how proud you felt to be His first- found son…", alone seem weird, but can still be thought of as the Ruinous Powers trying to placate the tortured remnants of Horus's humanity. Them however seemingly speaking to him of the love he still has for his father, especially like the narrator seems to do here would be about as out of character as it gets: "A trick. A last trick. A last damned trick! A lever to prise open your armour. A feint to make you drop your guard. A magician’s encore sleight of hand. The final desperate scheme of an eternal and ruthless schemer. You make to cast your father’s corpse aside, because you understand it is merely part of the trick, but the body is already disintegrating into papery ash and luminous dust. It was just an aspect, another discarded aspect, another empty husk. He is not dead. You cry out, in anger and despair. You try to snatch the power back into yourself, but it is pooled around you in a great black slick, sticky and sluggish, slow to respond, slow to obey, reluctant to reinhabit the vessel of your body now that you have scorned it. You draw it back in as quickly as you can. You inhale to fill your lungs and soul with it. You gather it in frantically, for you must be ready to defend yourself. The worst of it… Your human heart, still raw and exposed, feels relief. A kind of joy. Your father is not dead. Your father is not dead. You didn’t kill Him. He lives-". The False Four do many things, that may be beyond the comprehension of mortals or just outright mad, but all but encouraging their chosen instrument to mourn the death of their archenemy seems a bit much. It instead appears, that the choice of a second-person narrator is meant to showcase both Horus's loss of control, but also the inner conflict that is still at least subconciously fought within him. One between the corruption and will of Chaos and the remainig shreds of Horus' nobler qualities and love.

My only issue I had with the fight. Is that it leaves results open to interpretation. Did Sanguinius’s fight with Horus really save the emperor as it was stated in lore many times? Or did he just go to fight a hopeless fight and die for nothing. I feel we were owed a real definitive outcome rather then having to speculate, since it was the last book and all. Plus I don’t think we got enough of Sanguinius’s perspective, it was mostly from Horus’s perspective…

Firstly the writing choice for playing the battle out through Horus' eyes is pretty genius as it keeps the reader questioning if what they're seeing/hearing is TRULY real, or is it just muddled thoughts of Horus' mind still coming back together, being twisted by the Chaos gods, etc. Example being when the Emperor faces him and says something like "You killed my son." We read that from Horus' perspective and Horus realizes to himself "Oh he's not talking about Sanguinius, he's talking to the Chaos Gods about ME. But I'm not dead!" As the reader WE get to decide if the Emperor is talking to Horus/The Gods about Sanguinius, or does he mean that they killed the Horus that Emps loved. Was it just Horus' arrogance making that assumption, or was it truth? But secondly it also allows the books that follow to be open to a little bit of bending based on reader responses from this one. We'll probably get some last words from The Emperor before he's tossed on the throne. Maybe some more insights with what they do with Sanguinius' bodies. Truly the way it was written leaves a lot of closure there for us to get in the following books. I personally think the fabled "chink in the armor" we all have looked to for so long was the mental impact Sanguinius potentially inflicted on Horus due to outright defying him, denying him, and being unafraid. He was successful in pissing him off and surprising Horus before he activated his Warp Spaghetti powers and was like "ope just kidding you didn't beat me up at all." Lol
@leodesalis59153 ай бұрын
I've always believed it was after the emperor saw what Horus had done to sanguinius, his best son, his likely heir, his golden boy, seeing him slaughtered in such a manner made the emperor truly believe Horus was gone and he was now merely a vessel of chaos. It allowed him to not hold back and remove Horus from the universe. Sanguinius was everyone's favourite pretty much or at least everyone highly respected him, if Horus could do what he did to him, there was none of the original Horus left to try and save.

I think in the moment Horus wraped his mind around the true meaning of bravery he knew Sanguinius will always be above him.

He was brave himself. Plenty of time’s he has had to “pretend his courage” in front of his sons and mortal humans. Pre-heresy Horus was a flawed man and he recognized those flaws. He wished to do better and he did.

@@62sy I see where you are coming from. I don't hate Horus at all. I just don't think he was the first among equals. Sanguinius is not even my favorite Primarch. This will always be Vulkan and Rogal Dorn. The former caring the most for what the Emperor himself cared for the most, humans. And the later willing to protect all of this without seeking glory for himself.

A heart-breaking end to a life filled with compassion, generosity, bravery, and nobility. I can feel the tear ducts swell with fluid - salty, warm, slightly stinging. My throat clenches -- it's hard to swallow. A thing unfelt but solid nonetheless is lodged within, taunting me with its obstruction, though I can and do breathe without complication. My eyelids close and open repeatedly, instinctively, to blink away the tears that have not yet found their way onto the sclerae. My heart swells with sorrow. The Angel, the paragon, the examplar of the best that Humanit could ever be, broken, brought low by a BEAST. Now anger. It's hot and heavy in my veins, a molten fury just beneath the skin that will not be quenched. Satisfaction just beyond my sight, knowing that this BEAST will soon meet his end.... The Black Rage.....

I feel it’s particularly savage that they make you see the end of the battle through the Warmasters eyes. 😮

The no evil in reality is actually a old asatru thought. There is no such thing as evil only interests. Warp gods aren't evil they just do their thing. Their thing just happens to conflict with everyone else's.

My only note is that there is no Red Thirst? Before End and Deqth novels my favourite theory was that Sanguinues did fallen into red rage killed Horus but than Emperor has to kill him in turn but not before sustaining horrifying damage himself. It would be proper grim dark.

I keep picturing Horus as Palpatine when he speaks in the beginning.

Omg man More please more of this war lore. Your storytelling is movie quality…. I was at a stand still from working lost in this story…my only disappointment is finding this channel and not having like 50 3 hour videos to choose and and enjoy… I’m terribly impatient 😩.

how can you not love Sanguinius... i weep for him even now. It's a shame he was tired and beat before it began. I don't think that would have changed things but his end is sad. And I don't hate Horus, I want to but I don't. This is a battle for survival. And Horus wins.
