At 3:08 what he did there was multiply the bottom equation by -1, and that is allowed, and what you get for your trouble is all the signs change and the coefficients on the C terms are now opposites or additive inverses.

Excuse me, what do I do if one of my sets of points has a 0? for example (0,4).
@vlogtomejr.19197 жыл бұрын
In your case, (0,4) is the y-intercept. Therefore, c=4. Still unsure? Plug it in! f(0)=ax^2+bx+c. Substitute every instance of x with 0. a(0^2)+b*0+c. What's left after this is c. Since f(0)=4 and f(0)=c, then c=4

nicely done, but what about when you can't reduce when you're trying to eliminate a or b. is it protocol to multiply each equation by a different value to achieve the same a or b value?
@danielschaben8 ай бұрын
If we use the method of elimination, then yes we multiply the two equation by the the number required to make the least common multiple of either a or b

why did you at 5 minutes and 15 seconds say to multiply the bottom equation by 3. Where did you get the 3 from thanks.
@danielschaben11 ай бұрын
I multiplied by 3 to match up the variable b in both equations. So then both bs would have a 3 coefficient. The process is the key to eliminating the b variable. If the top equation had a 4b, I would have multiplied by 4.

What if one of the points is a root-like (30,0) or the origin (0,0). Can I still plug them in?

This is probably a stupid question but does it work with any three random points?
@danielschaben5 жыл бұрын
Actually that is an amazing question, and one I have had in the back of my mind, but never spent time exploring. It won't work with any three points because the three points have to form a parabola. So if you used (2,1) (2, 3) (5,7) for instance y = ax^2+bx+c would not work however I think x = ay^2 + by + c would work for those three points. You have me thinking. ... Great question. If you stacked three points it would not work in either case (2, 1) (2, 3,) (2, 4). would not work, or any three collinear points would not work. I don't have time right now to explore much more. But what if the three points lie on a circle? What about three points that lie on a hyperbola or trig function? ohhhh so much we could explore with this seemingly silly question. Good work getting my mind working!

I love watching different instructors/teachers/professors show the steps in working more complicated algebra topics but I wonder if too much time is spent on the basic arithmetic. If someone is learning algebra and doesn’t get eliminating or moving variables and constants in the solution process then maybe they should be watching basic math videos first. It really slows down the instruction. Just an observation.
@danielschaben Жыл бұрын
I really only make these videos for my students. They will watch them mainly as more practice for those that need it. A way of studying for the test. I only threw them up here as a free place to store them back in 2010. Had no idea that anyone else would even find them valuable. Wish I had time to make more.
@Fremdscham-uu3xv5 жыл бұрын
god bless you but what happens if I get numbers such as 0.55? Because your tutorial works bad at this case A (-2/22) B (1/7) C (3/2) and at the end, my results are a bit different than the 3 given points like if I use B I get 6.98 instead of 7 or 22,87 instead of 22
