This is a fabulous video. I found myself running away from work & feeling more anxious as my desk grew more cluttered. It was easy for me to write off the instinct to be fastidious & spartan in my work area as an extravagance, or imitating/aspiring for things I want, but it’s essential for productivity. I think the TL;DR of this video is to trust your gut/instinct/feelings and try to examine yourself if you are finding yourself distracted, worried, less-productive, or anything related to that.

Some useful tips. My workspace has always taken centre stage wherever I’ve lived because my life revolves around studying and working. That has usually meant that the office takes over the dining area and sometimes even the living room. I’m looking forward to the day when the layout of where I’m living lets me work from the couch with a keyboard connected to a huge monitor and I’m still near the coffee pot. Coziness is important in winter. That means wood and colourful art as a contrast to the neutral walls and furniture. My desk is a white metal IKEA unit topped with a beautiful piece of salvaged solid teak. Adjustable lamps instead of overhead lighting are key if you’re videoconferencing in both bright daylight and in late evening darkness. My leisure time spent with others happens in coffee shops and on hiking trails so I don’t need a bunch of rooms complicating my living space.

I live in a one room Apartment - and you inspired me in the past a lot - I’ve created an office space with high focus of making it look like living room furniture - I focused from mouse (pastel green), to desk Matt (rosé), to screen (white and green), to keyboard (white and light grey) on not using anything black - I got that ikea chair (white beige)- which doesn’t look too officy :) thanks for the inspiration :) - got a tylko which is separating visually the bed from the office and having a dedicated „tech drawer“, and a drawer for my black working bag ! My monitor is in the same time my TV (Samsung M8) - the desk is white and height adjustable - to melt in with the wall - I have a lightgreen carpet below and I love it :) would like to show it to you and get your opinion about it

Great content, just one remark on desk depth. Going other way around into shallow desk can be even worse than too deep in my experience. I have a desk in a living room that is quite long and narrow. Opted for a narrow LILLÅSEN Ikea desk which visually fitted well due to its form factor. Desk in practice is even to shallow to use with a laptop, just lacking leg space in practice. Ending up using it rarely, while my spouse straight up refuse to use it completely and we end up on dining table when working from home.

Disagree about the premiss in the intro: gamer setups with flashy RGBs, figurines etc. aren't just about function, they are very much an aesthetic choice. There are tons of videos about people decorating even the inside of their PC case, or how they have different smart lighting schemes for different games (whether futuristic scifi shooter or cozy farming sim). It's just that their taste is different from the average interior design enthusiast bubble.

Easy cheap and minimal desk setup with all the gear one might need. 1. Alex drawer units left and right for organisation paired with a wooden plate as a desk or a pro desk which is height adjustable etc. (let´s face it you never really need to adjust it anyway) 2. Above the monitor or monitors a simple IKEA LACK shelf unit which is hollow to hide all the cables. 3. Unter the LACK unit you can install speakers, mic. holder, headphone holder, webcam and or light all out of the way and yet functional. 4. On top the shelf you can can place an additional laptop or some pictures or plants. 5. Additionally I use cupboards for my VR gear, Camera gear and other stuff as well. It all looks clean, I can wide my desk any time since I use monitor arms, I can hide all the cables easily and I have all my stuff.

I've always been uncertain about standing desks because of 1) lack of built-in storage drawers and 2) I suffer from a chronic illness which makes standing difficult for really any length of time. Currently, I regularly get up from sitting at my desk to blow my nose, get more water or a snack from the kitchen or just to pace in the hallway. I don't know yet how that will feel with working a full-time schedule of being at my desk all day.

About the G.A.S, I usually tend to sit on something I want for weeks, if not months or years just to justify I need it and then buy it. While it still ends up with me having 1 mechanical keyboard, a half keyboard, a macro pad with a knob, a pair of bookshelf speaker, headphone and IEM and 2 27" monitors, I still find myself using all of them and having one less hinders my workflow. And about the ergonomics, I bought a less comfortable but still good ergo chair as I believe that anything that separate us from the floor is worth investing in, I try to not keep any water bottle or cups near my desk as I have a water jug a few steps away from my desk, this encourages me to stand up and drink while not far enough to make me lazy and get dehydrated.

I wish you would’ve made this video sooner 😂. I went from an Ikea Malm Desk which was terrible for my aesthetic. Then I went for a walnut desk which is nice. Then I went for an all matte black setup for my gaming desk which was very nice but it was in my bedroom with poor lighting so I didn’t feel productive at all. Now I’m working on a white desktop with japandi style vibes and trying to incorporate more artificial lighting since the area is far from a window.

My personal major problem with most offices is that desks are far too high for ladies. I spent a lot of time finding the perfect height setup. After that, I focus on simplicity combined with practicality. My laptop is lifted so the monitor is the same height as my external monitor which is lifted to eye height with the desk being elbow height. Yes, definitely drawers and minimal distractions. I do insist on having some flowers on my desk for a splash of colour, but that's it.
@pindebraendeАй бұрын
number one mistake imo: placement of desk. I just don't want to face a wall with my back to the room. I'd rather be in what feng shui calls the command position, facing the room and the entrance to the room. if the room is quite intimate but has a large window, i'll place my desk next to or facing that, and take advantage of the daylight. surprised you didn't talk about this! thank you for mentioning acoustics though!
@FifalianaFilmsАй бұрын
I totally agree with you, but majority of us just don’t have enough space. A commanding position of the desk takes so much more space as the desk is taking a more central position, and cable management becomes very difficult.
@Yantonio7Ай бұрын
great point.
@polishthedayАй бұрын
I’ve only lived in a couple of spaces where such a setup worked. In both cases, the room was at least 17 feet long and took up half the total living space. In one case it was about 500 sq. ft. You need to be close to at least one wall at the side to have access to power, unless your work doesn’t require a big monitor.
@pindebraendeАй бұрын
@@polishtheday it's true it takes more space and cable management is a challenge. If you draw a square around your desk and the area taken up by your chair (and any rug or floor mat), then rotate the contents 180°, that should make a good start without encroaching on the remaining square meters in the room. I'm not saying facing the wall or window can't be the best option for a home 😊
@mariemagdalene980225 күн бұрын
I choose facing wall 1/ I use screen and laptop and a bunch of cable that I don’t want to have in the middle of the room and vision. I choose sofa for my command position. 2/ as adhd I need to limit my stimuli while working. Wall is the best. I tried with the window and got myself mostly dumb staring at the sky. I tried the room and got myself distracted until everything was in perfect order and then 🎉 lunch time and all over again. No distractions! Wall is my view of choice. And… I would like to hide the screen with a button. Future!
