As an Australian watching this game I was embarrassed. Daniil showed so much passion as himself through the tournament and I love that - I’m a huge Kyrgios fan for this reason. Sometimes it was over the line for Daniil, but he was always honest and thoughtful in acknowledging this talks gracefully about how it doesn’t serve him. That the crowd would cheer his double faults and boo his expressions of self reflects very poorly on us and I hope in short time it’s forgotten and doesn’t take anything away from what should continue to be a great champion of the sport.

This man's future is only going to get brighter and the more hate he gets from shitty crowds, the more hungry he becomes for them points and triumphing over delusional people. Massive props to how well he respected the veteran all time great he played against tonight and how much he has matured into a more humble player, and he wasn't too negatively fussed about how he (medvedev) played tonight. Whilst with that confidence, he honoured the effort and fighting spirit of Nadal and how that was too much for him and how much more he needed to work in order to keep himself amongst these tennis giants still dominating in today's day and age. I really feel for him, and I am ashamed, as an Australian, of the behaviour of the crowd tonight. Applauding unforced errors is unkind and not in the spirit of the game. However let's not forget Rafa has been in this position in his career too - he was treated very poorly - booing, jeering, etc - in 2005 against a crowd heavily in favour of Grosjean at the French (he was only 18 at the time), and again in 2009 at the French against Soderling. I'm sure there have been other times but these come to mind. I am in no way condoning the behaviour of the crowd tonight, but I hope he will be able to see, with time, that these words he speaks now are coming from raw emotion, and once that subsides, he will see things more clearly. He will see a crowd which has grown up with Rafa, he will see a crowd that maybe judges him a little for his temper and outbursts, he will see a drunk and rowdy crowd lacking in decency, respect and self control in this moment, motivated by their intense, selfish desire to see history be made so they can tell everyone they know that 'they were there that night'. Hopefully, he will also see that his time to have the crowd on his side will come. He is a great player, a great champion, a man of intelligence and creativity and charisma. If he can manage to process this event in the right way, it will only make him stronger.

You're coming at this from the crowd being ultimately important, and him waiting for his turn to be loved by them. This is flawed. I think he sees through to the ultimate truth of the situation. The strongest position is to not give a damn about who the crowd favors. To want or expect nothing from them. In the grand scheme of things, to realize that they mean nothing. Do it for yourself. Do it for those you love, and for the quest for perfection. To hell with pleasing the masses.
@wndlrms14202 жыл бұрын
Also Novak (not a djokovic fan but he's certainly deserving of his respect when it comes to his career) has dealt with huge adversity when it comes to crowd support, especially as his main rivals are traditional crowd favorites (federer and nadal). When reflecting back on it, novak's mental strength in that regard is insane. Hopefully Daniil can take some inspiration from Novak in that regard, because he's so talented.
@beatrice22362 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. No excuses, but it will make him stronger
@qrt542 жыл бұрын
Very well formulated. When I heard this story for the first time, I was heartbroken. However, his statements might have originated from raw emotions. Medvedev has learned a hard but truthful and important lesson here: Do not depend on others. The crowd was unbelievably rude during the game since they even applauded his unforced errors. Now it is about realising that his fans won’t be there in person and that support as well as respect during the game is something that might often lack. Knowing and experiencing that now, Medvedev has to work even harder and demonstrate the best form of himself in the very eyes of this crowd. Do not care about the crowd hating you, just show them what you are capable of. The hating fans are indeed fans that don’t think very much meaning that they will cherish you after you have truly shown yourselves to them. But these fans are second-class fans. Appreciate every single fan there is now and trust me, the dream of the kid will come true. Furthermore, the dream coming true will be even more valuable than one might imagine due to the additional hardships one had to deal with. The victory will be sweeter than the one of others. This assessment of you applies to everyone. Take your time and come back stronger.

I’m a big fan of Medvedev: In my view, he’s a genius on court with heart an limitless talent, but he’s also unbelievably sensitive and authentic. These two traits while admirable in theory, do not necessarily endear him to a certain type of fan that permeates modern sport and tennis in particular. While most athletes have sport specific intelligence, .I believe that Medvedev, at only 25, is orders of magnitude above in general intelligence. This, I believe provides him a field of vision wherein he sees, feels and analyzes, and is affected by too much. But being a lifelong tennis player and fan, he is, at least for the time being, my favorite ATP pro (Ash Barty is my favorite WTA…). ps: While I may pull for a specific player, in a specific match, I cheer all players for the magical shot making they bring to the game. (Even Djokovic, lol.)

I agree with you in that, if any player on the court makes an amazing shot, the point of being in there in the crowd is to be amazed and let ourselves react in a positive way cheering and whatever. The only time I have ever booed was 2014 Australia Open that I went to the first week of when Tomic played for 5 minutes against Rafa in the first round then walked off. He already knew he had an injury. He turned up for 5 minutes for the paycheck instead of letting a lucky loser play the match.

I'm usually a proud Aussie & as a former ballkid at 3 Oz Opens (the last to be held at Kooyong in '87 & the first 2 at the 'new' tennis centre in '88 & '89), I've concurrently seen the massive rise in crowd numbers & the lack of class & etiquette of a huge number of the "fans" who attend the tournament, sadly...I grew up during a time when you never applauded a player's unforced error (unless the point was a phenomenal one by both sides), let alone a double fault & most definitely not a first service fault...but sadly, so much of the crowd now aren't true tennis fans & they're tacky as all Hell...I know that Daniil would never read these comments but I'd love him to know that a great deal of Aussies are truly disgusted with, & embarrassed by the behaviour of so many attendants (certainly not tennis fans) over the past week, in particular. I cringed when the jobs kept booing when Jim Courier was doing an on court interview post on of the matches, and you literally couldn’t hear what he was saying even with a microphone! The player asked the crowd if the could perhaps just respect Jim as a former champion but nothing made a difference. So off course if you have to experience this crap your dream goes and you just play cold and for money to make enough to retire and make your family safe.

I truly feel for Daniil. He is a gifted, intelligent young man with a beautiful soul. I love Russians because they are always so sincere and passionate, and very courageous. Tennis used to be such a great sport but as it became increasingly popular, it started to appeal to a lot of ignorant, uneducated crowds. Unfortunately, social media and politics have ruined it completely. Disrespecting players during a match is now the norm, and in some countries - like we have seen in Australia - it reaches levels that are truly uncivilised and unacceptable. Goes beyond tennis, really. I am afraid journalists are also part of the problem as they create and fuel a lot of the unjustified hostility towards certain players. What a sad world we live in!

Daniil should take the right learning from today, not to nurture his frustration. If the public was not with him, it is OK. Time to strip the Australians of their grand slam. Give it to a completely different city, for instance Moscow (oh nooooooo) or Singapore. See if they can handle the responsibility and produce a better behaved tournament, where players feel safe and respected. Cheering for your fan favourite is one thing but people loudly cheering every error, cheering for 1st serve faults, ppl deliberately calling out as players they don't like serve. Medvedev had nearly the entire stadium booing him for 5 hours without stop. Just a disrespectful and hooligan crowd wrapped in fake Gucci. This was happening throughout the tournament and organizers and umpires did nothing about it. So, time for a reshuffle.
