The first time I watched tennis was a match of Nadal's against Federer. The commentators were so biased, constantly praising Federer but to me, Nadal's quiet strength on court and his aloofness towards everything apart from the game made him seem so relatable. It was like he was in a dragon's den where even the majority of the audience was almost questioning how he could even attempt to think that he could better Federer. That was 2009. I've followed Rafa since that day. Not once have I felt disappointed in how he's approached every match. His determination is unreal and his humility is unbelievable. I have cried when he's won And had a horrible feeling in my stomach when he's lost. But I've always asked myself, how must Rafa be feeling now? Today when he was 2 sets down and even looked incredibly down cast like he knew he'd lost already, I felt how can anyone try to pick up from here? But there is only one person who can show you that no matter how deep the damage, you can not just bounce back but you can triumph. What a career. What an achievement. There is no one like Rafa.

That was when I became a Nadal fan too And when Federer broke down in tears during the award ceremony, I saw Nadal communicating empathy. What keeps me glued to the match last night, was because I was reminded by what Rafa said during the interview when he won his first match in AO, he did not aim for 21st GS, but instead he was enjoying tennis and grateful to be given the chance to even participate in the tournament after all the hardships he went, the surgery and catching Covid back in December. At that moment, I did not root for him to break the historical record, but instead I root for him to be able to play another set, and another one. Even though he lost the second set, I only hope he can play another set, and another one after, and indeed that's what he did, he played 5 sets total, and even won the match. This interview shows the priceless character of Raphael Nadal, never claiming to be anything of great but humble and compassionate, and that's what makes a sports person exceptional, he fought his heart out and the unexpected occurred that to me is.....GREAT!!! Sometimes those that are considered to be "Greatest" often lack the character of being great......but Rapha without a doubt showed that he deserve to be..."Great"!!!! Cause he has 21 slams and what a battle of heart!! Well done Raha!!!! Bravo!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏.....the great!!! And the...."GREATEST"!!!!! 💪

I am Russian, so I was supposed to be rooting for Medvedev. But when I heard he will be playing against Rafa, I had to root for Nadal. Nadal was always my inspiration when I was playing tennis in my younger years. I am very happy for Nadal. But I do hope Danila will only win this year, he deserves it too
@jimreily75382 жыл бұрын
As a Westerner, I am always interested to hear the opinions of Russians. Personally I too am a fan of Rafa. But, yes, I think Daniil Medvedev is a fine player, he was very close to winning. I think his frustrations must be overcome (I think he allows himself to become frustrated, and that hurts him, if he can ignore the crowd, ignore any distractions, ignore his emotions, he could be better - but he's already very good)
@anastashiam11542 жыл бұрын
I'm a Rafa fan too but I think Danil is on his way to win a grandslam
@moneyman239462 жыл бұрын
Same for me as an Austrian, when he played against Thiem. It's not even close actually to whom to root for as a hard Nadal fan since 2007. Medvedev will win a couple of grand slams on hard courts, bet on it. (-:

It's important to listen to Rafa. Indirectly, it was an advice to Daniil. If he stays passionate, and he keeps dreaming, then he can be in Rafa's shoes and have the crowd on his side one day
@katl64262 жыл бұрын
The only player who would have got equal crowd participation is Federer. Any other player would have been in the same position as Medvedev wouldn't they. I feel sorry for him to have been in that position, but he's still a great player & will get his turn as a crowd favourite
@regaljourney18942 жыл бұрын
@@katl6426 I agree with you 100%. Danil is in the next generation of great players after the big 3 finally retire. Medvedev has the same issue that Djokovic has, he comes off as somewhat unlikable at times. He will be better off when his maturity level reaches his talent level.

One thing I absolutely enjoyed in this grandslam tournament is how Nadal was managing his energy level and avoided playing every point like it was match point. All his career up until this year, Nadal always played with the highest intension on every single point. But in AO, he was wise enough to save energy for bigger moments and bigger serves. Even his celebration during matches was reduced to save every ounce of energy. That strategy was key to his victory against Medvedev.
