Under the direction of Klaus Mäkelä, pianist Daniil Trifonov were spectacular! Bravo! As Martha Argerich once said about Trifonov: "He has everything and more … tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that". Very true, indeed.

I'm a big Trifonov fan. There's nothing the man can't play, no technical passage in the repertoire that would give him much trouble. This concerto is very difficult, though compared with some of the other music Trifonov tackles, it's a walk in the park. Still, this is not my favorite performance of this piece by a long shot. In the first movement, when he arrived at the Hymn-like section in F Major, my eyes opened up wide and I said "oh no!". He just kind of banged it out like it was nothing special. When the same theme reappears at 17:49 it gets slightly better treatment for a couple of bars before he goes back to the same boring treatment. Anyway - it's not how I, a lowly milling pianist, hears it (nor do most of the greats who've recorded it over the decades). There are many other places in the concerto where I'm left scratching my head over this performance. But there are also spots that are truly astounding. I'll have to circle back and listen again when I'm not so tired. Maybe I'll change my mind. I just stumbled on this recording for the first time tonight.

@@elisabethbaumer-sn8go

You're absolutely right! I, too, was wondering about that. For me, Daniil is some kind "force," a force... from higher worlds than can be perceived, felt and heard. He seems to function as some kind of a medium or ether through which the spirit of the composer can once again be heard upon earth. This is some kind of a sacred power given to but few.

STRANGE, STRANGE, STRANGE MASTERPIECE! I avoided it for years. Except when I heard it live about thirteen years ago at Meyerhoff Hall in Baltimore, Md. I was confident Andre Watts performance would provide the clarification and consequently, the understanding I needed to embrace this austere work. I have since learned to love and admire it. PWG. P.S. Only, the powerfully distracting “splice-lapses” are kind of crazy.

How is it austere?
@paulgreen6921

@@rravvia Austere; is a reference to the novel, and severe spirit and psychology of the first movement. The crashing introduction on the tympani, the almost screeching nature of the theme struck by the strings affected me in a terrifying way. From a child I was peculiarly sensitive to music in a minor mode. The first movement of this concerto epitomized the psychological dread I experienced with pieces of this nature. Again, as I learned more about the source of inspiration for this great work and Brahms relationship with Robert Schumann in particular, the terror has since been replaced by the joy of understanding and being able to flow with such a pinnacle of the piano repertory. PWG

@@paulgreen6921 I'm just not so familiar with the word, I suppose. I tend to think of it more like Franck and cathedrals, while this concerto is filled with a kind of passion and at times anger that seem to exceed "austere". I know the work very well, it is hard wired into my brain, every note (my original acquaintance was Cliburn/Leinsdorf, which I think is an exceptional performance). I can't bother with historical stuff like "Schumann" because who really knows? And I don't like to attach a specific story of that kind to most works, although I do make up poetic narratives for works, but I didn't for this one. It was for me above all pure anger, maybe at the world, the Brahms who said "If there is anyone I have not insulted today, I apologize" LOL Yet I can see an austerity, as in the second theme (sixths I guess), which proceeds very horizontally, part theme, part texture, the often downward two note phrases consistently repeating and furrowed brow, an angry, disdainful verbal expression, yet unrelentingly sad and angry, I just say "angry" which is a poor word. Terror isn't quite the word for me for the trills, but it is a good word, in a way, a shriek but it's an "angry" shriek, terror of and at the world, followed by downward tromping of intervals offering no real hope, resigned to accept the world, the century perhaps, giving this conclusion that it's all shit dammit, yet with counter themes that arrive at triumph, or perhaps just dreams of triumph, it is a youthful dream in a way, that gave way years later to his autumnal piano pieces that lost much of the anger, yet no love of the world, to be sure. His heart is best toured in the first movement of the Violin concerto, this is not his whole heart, but the Violin concerto has the sutures, now healed, running across his heart, among many other sights, but here is where the original cuts were made I guess.

Even though Trifonov is an excellent pianist, there is no comparison with how Claudio Arrau would interpret this piece. Arrau’s version with Haitink has no parallel. Trifonov lacks the tempo, tone and depth of Arrau. In my humble opinion, only Zimmerman comes close to the mastery of Arrau.

I'm sorry. This is a wonderful performance but I'm totally distracted by hair and beard. There is dress etiquette for a concert soloist and this is not good. Actually there is etiquette for any workplace, and being a concert pianist is a job. You dress properly and look your best when you go to work. Klaus looks good - Trifonov looks likes a vagrant!!! I can't imagine Horowitz playing without being immaculate
