Believe me its not - 80% of it is just reciting the way you've practised the piece. If you play badly in practice, you'll perform badly. If you play perfectly in practice, you have a chance of performing it perfectly. But therefore the practicing for many hours a day is the hard part.

His performance is great, but what a piano!! The sound coming from that Fazioli is to die for, the mid and and highs are Steinway crisp and clear, and the bass is almost Bosendorfer deep and full..

@@agamaz5650 Interesting question. It may not actually be underrated-- pianos at that end of the scale are mind-bogglingly expensive, and they don't produce hundreds a day. On the other hand, no matter how good your product is, it's hard to compete with Steinway. Fazioli's day will come. Erard was Liszt's piano-- you don't hear much about them any more.

@@agamaz5650 They only build 150 pianos a year, and only a few of those are concert grands. So they are far less common than Steinway or Yamaha concert grands. Not many competitions offer a Fazioli piano for their entrants.

With this piece, Chopin brings to bear a complete and utter display of poignant emotion. This piece is a pianists dream. Blazing octave fanfares which conjure up demons from the piano, while chordal passages sing with such intimacy and sentiment that they warm the heart beyond measure. Arpeggiations so delicate the keyboard seems to stretch forever into the over-tone stratosphere. Scalar torrents which test a performers evenness and fluidity and tempo What is so fascinating is that this piece, while super serious, does not burden the listener with it’s brooding and cataclysmic temperament. aka: Chopin’s most serious “scherzo” Which in itself is.... ironic. From Wikipedia: “ melody and fanfares in-tune with an apocalyptic orchestra. I.e. Nordic Valhalla” To beat the irony horse:Truly a piece for the gods of piano

Aside from the technical brilliance and absolutely beautiful phrasing throughout, there's a sheer intensity to this performance that I don't recall ever seeing elsewhere. The way he leans into the piano as the coda starts to swell, and the demented look on his face as he glares through his hair toward the end as that coda becomes an absolute maelstrom of sound. And that ending, with the sudden stop before the final chords... just magnificent. Utterly magnificent.

fun fact: chopin wrote this piece for one of his students, who he was apparently close with. His name was Adolf Gutmann and he was only 15 when he got his first lesson of him. Gutmann also only lived a few houses apart from Robert Schumann, who (i think many people know) was a pianist and composer too.

The competition favors players with a more subtle, salon like, and sweeter singing tone. Trifonov is more energetic and plays in a more 'Rachmaninoff' like russian school manner with massive contrasts, loud banging chords and lots of pedal. It's passionate and beautiful, but not quite the 'Chopin' character they want.
