The U.S. calls itself a Democracy, but it is a Republic, most “democracies” are. A Republic has an appointed head of state with greater power than other elected officials, while true democracy all representatives have equal say.

Well, if those Greenlanders who want independence from Denmark succeed in setting up and winning a referendum, they will apply for independence and get it. Greenland and Denmark will set up treaties and agreements to ease the process, and everyone remains friends. If Greenland wants independence from Denmark that does not mean it wants dependence on the US, quite the opposite.
