I interpreted the nonlinear story telling as a method of telling the viewers to watch it in the moment, and not to dwell so much on the past or the future. On one hand you can try to piece all the different scenes together in the correct order, but on the other you can appreciate the moments for what they are individually and how they speak to Tobias and Almut’s relationship. It’s about watching it, or “living” in the moment, not thinking too much about what’s happened or will happen

I think the non-linear story telling doesn’t play as big of an effect as people are making it out to be. The argument “well we see in the future that they’re together, so the outcome of the argument doesn’t mean as much because we already know they’re together”. If it was a linear story, we would still already know they’re together. It’s a movie. Obviously they’re going to be together in an hour because otherwise there wouldn’t be a movie. I think overall, this isn’t a story about two people. It’s more of a story and cut-away of what life is. Life is messy. Life isn’t always linear. Life is sometimes cliche. And sometimes in life, your pen just doesn’t work. But all of that puts you where you are meant to be. The little details change your life, even if they seem insignificant. I think that this story shows that beautifully

This! The movie is called "We live in Time" after all and not the romantic and dramatic Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield cancer story. Everyone's criticism seems to be very much the same, that the non-linear story telling undercuts Almut's and Tobias' romantic journey. When this is very much the point of this movie. It's a collection of little and big moments shared between romantic partners. I think the movie tries to look at relationships through the lens of the people in them. We don't remember everything, and the things we do remember aren't coherent or linear. Most of us aren't protagonists on journeys, we are just people that spend moments with each other through time. And for these shared moments we will be remembered by our loved ones. Not for the roles and spaces we filled in this world. Life has no plots just experiences we can choose to hold on to.

I wish I liked this more than I did. Two good performances, but everything around them lets them down. And the nonlinear storytelling undercuts the film. Such as when the characters have a fight and potential breakup over a topic, but it has zero emotional weight because we already know the results of the thing they got in a fight about.

I really appreciated this movie from the perspective of someone who has lost a parent to cancer. It gave me an insight on the view my dad may have had while dealing with his illness, for example the moment when almut was talking about wanting to leave behind something for her daughter to be proud of. That really resonated with me because my dad wrote a children’s book right before I died and included my whole family in the process. That is something I can remember him by. This movie made me cry but also comforted me in a unique way as I connected to the characters and imagined my mom in the shoes of tobias’s character. A very real movie with two amazing actors. Love.

Sometimes in life there is no payoff. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for your partner. If your partner wanted to achieve something great at the cost of giving up getting married, what difference does it make? Almut was going to die, Tobias wanted her to be happy and to make the most out of the life she had. And it didn’t make a difference to get married or not. They still loved each other right to the end, wedding ring or not

totally agree with you, Dan. I saw it yesterday and was disappointed. I was hoping for a heartfelt emotional journey but I got that more out of Andrew Garfield's viral clip from NYT's "Modern Love" or the Elmo clip you mentioned than I did from this movie. He and Pugh are excellent, but the script really left me wanting more. The nonlinear storytelling really added nothing IMO. I was especially disappointed with how they dealt with arc around Pugh's character hesitating about having children. I'm a woman at that age where I'm having a lot of conflicting feelings (and arguments) about this very subject and it rubbed me the wrong way how there wasn't really any deciding factor or indication of why Pugh's character changed her mind on this, especially given the circumstances

This movie is like a delicious pork chop. You’ve had pork chop before. It’s nothing groundbreaking. But you like it because the chef did the best with those ingredients
@cainabel404

This movie is nothing like a delicious pork chop. Pork chops are delicious. Delicious pork chops are doubly delicious. This movie wasn't even one dose of delicious, so the only kind of pork chop it could have been is a ruined pork chop. However, this film is not a ruined pork chop, because the chef played it safe and avoided ruin. Instead, this movie is bland, well-cooked, unsatisfying and a lot thinner than it promised to be. This movie is a watery chicken soup. It is not disgusting. It is edible. It is well seasoned. But the can called it a "hearty chicken and vegetable broth". It's not hearty, and other than a few tiny bits of carrot, it is difficult to differentiate any distinct vegetables. I assume the chunks of white are chicken pieces, but I'm not entirely confident on that. I'll eat it. It's not going to make me throw up. And it's not enough to change my opinion of chicken soup (I quite like chicken soup). But I'm definitely going to be snacking on some chocolate and cheetos tonight. Coz whilst I may have consumed a can of chicken soup for dinner, I certainly didn't eat.

If we learned anything from the early 2000s writer's strike, it's that a good director can get a great performance from even a bad actor, but no actor or director is good enough to make up for a bad script. You just can't skimp of hiring quality writers.

Dan, although I enjoyed this movie more than you did, I agree with you on the script issues. Thankfully, Garfield and Pugh are brilliant actors and their amazing chemistry sell the story.

As a hospital chaplain who has the quality vs quantity conversations, I appreciated where they started with that. I wish there had been more professional interactions shown to help them grapple with that very heavy question, (doctor, social worker, chaplain, therapist). Though I did love the emotional intelligence of the doctor. It definitely delved into the emotional challenges of this question and brought tears to my eyes at times (having seen this in real life many times.) I feel like them figuring out that decision together could have been the basis of the first act of the movie. The non-linear storytelling was not as clear as it could have been. The apartment and house, and Pugh's hair style were too similar between present and past, that there were times it was a couple minutes into a scene before I noticed the time jump. Also, as someone who works with telling children hard truths, to have these otherwise emotionally intelligent parents, attempt to tell their daughter really hard news in a loud restaurant, felt awkward and out of place. I hope the work of my profession can one day be accurately represented on-screen. There are thousands of chaplains around the world doing this work every day, and I have yet to see a good representation in film or television. Even with the many medical dramas that are out there.

To be honest, I think you're being a little too harsh. I might be biased because I recently lost someone close to me to cancer... But a lot of the dialogue that Almut said and the things she was going through are all things that I recongnise from that period. Besides I think the non linear timeline in this case makes every scene stronger because you can already expect the outcome. I do have to agree that I found it weird they didn't go into the canceling of the marriage but also think it might be a message that at the end of the day it really is for Almut to decide and she eventually decided to have an awesome time with her family.

During this film I internally sighed and thought “how much more of this is there going to be?” Then the credits rolled. The time jump gimmick added nothing and made me felt constantly lost. The movie needed a deeper dive into the cancer/competition conflict and less time spent on the super saccharine moments of their early relationship.

I liked this one a lot more than most apparently! I thought the chemistry of these two characters and leads was what the entire film was pivoting on, and they absolutely smashed that out of the park - so the movie felt really strong to me. I didn’t mind so much that it was melodramatic or felt like it didn’t resolve every argument or scene (although I didn’t notice that as I was watching it, and I think it’s a very valid complaint in hindsight) because I was bought in to the concept of watching just pieces of their life together. It was also just quite charming - I hard disagree about the quality of the dialogue, and always felt that it was interesting, compelling and emotionally similar to the sorts of conversations I’ve had to have in my life.

This was one of my most anticipated films of the year since I love Andrew and Florence they're both great actors but I was underwhelmed by this film. Almut's character was the saving grace at least for me because we actually got to know her as a character and sympathise with her struggles. Tobias wasn't as fleshed out as he could've been all we know about him is that he's a recent divorcee who works for Weetabix and that he has a desire to have children. There was an opportunity to explore what his life was like before meeting Almut to get us to connect with him as a character more, I understand this film is centred around Almut and that's how it should be but he was underdeveloped as a character. Pugh and Garfield have electric chemistry but I think that their romance was too rushed, we don't get to see why they fell for each other and what they see in each other as individuals because the film is constantly jumping through time due to the non linear approach. Unfortunately I didn't end up devastated by the end like I expected to because I didn't know enough about these characters to care (albeit I don't cry often at media so take this with a grain of salt) and Almut's death was too abrupt. I think the scenes between Almut, Tobias and the daughter were sweet but the subject of having children could've been handled better like the whole "biological clock" argument from Tobias when his girlfriend is dealing with cancer and children isn't going to be something on her mind so obviously she was against it at first. I don't think this film is misogynistic like some negative reviews are saying, the decision was hers in the end but yeah Tobias had no right to get angry at her for that. Let me know your thoughts in the replies if you'd like!

Normally I don't feel this way at all, but here I feel expectations outweighed reality - it's not a perfect film, and the non-linear storytelling is baffling or challenging or frustrating or welcomed, depending on one's perspective or mood or quite honestly, which part of the film in particular we're talking about. I had no issues with events or the dialogue, and I wondered at the end if it would prove to be based on a book. And, nope.

Haven't seen it yet; but, upon listening to some of their interviews, both stars go on about the charisma they found & shared & the special experience filming together provided; sometime--I say--sometimes---this is a bit of red flag; these kind of recollections don't always translate into as impactful story for the audience; there may be other deficiencies in the script or direction that get overlooked; no one's shortchanging the performers--they each have demonstrated their talents previously-- but a 'love in' filming experience gives one pause going into the theatre.

I usually stay away from romance movies. I took a chance with this one because the idea of living your best life, in love, with limited time, is a great idea, so I thought. Ten minutes into the movie, I found myself struggling to figure out what was going on because of the random jumps in time and relationship development. I didn't realize that this was that kind of movie. As I'm watching, I started to Google why this was happening and 45 minutes in, I ultimately stopped watching. I ended up here for this review and I also read a news article about how this movie tried to be more than it actual was. From what I saw, the movie wasn't bad but it was not shaping up to be the type of movie that I'd be willing to sit through with a timeline that's all over the place. This movie just wasn't worth my effort or time. I have no regrets not watching all of it.

I think the emotional payoffs would've come from a more linear story. The shifting timelines takes away from the film and ruin the final act.

While I was watching I was like okay there HAS to be a crazy reveal to justify the order of the story telling and we never really got that.

The nudity is off-putting... not necessary.. confusing. feel bad for the main guy character.. no strong messege.

I don't disagree with your opinion. It was missing something. I did not expect the timeline. Jumping around moments from their lives. I don't think the gimmick helped. I wonder if it played in chronological order, would it be better? Instead of clips from their lives? I would love to see the film re-edited to chronological order. Andrew Garfield talking about grief irl was better than the film. I wanted a romance with Andrew Garfield & Florence Pugh. Idk if it even delivered on that. All the intimate scenes were lovely, but also quick & short. For me, the standout scene was when she gave birth. It had heart, it had comedy. I did like the ending, which I felt was quite open.

Its not the writing thats the problem, its the hollywood idea that the tragedy is what makes the movie good. And people fall for it. Its another it ends with us where the tragedy isnt actually there to be explored, the movie doesnt actually say anything about it, it just uses it for attention because ppl have strong feelings about these things... and im kind of sick of hollywood, publishing etc. using cancer as a prop when it doesnt know "what hard thing this character has been through" Cancer isn't a prop, it doesnt look the same in people, it isnt background nonsense to fill runtime. If you dont have anything to say then dont say it. You cant just fill in the blank with cancer for everything and expect the audience or the actors to help you forget what a mess you are looking at because "well its about cancer, it cant be bad" ugh, its like any progress we have made in storytelling is gone....

agreed, another prop is the death of a child (super sad!) or lover (also sad!). just because those tropes are included doesn't elevate the movie or makes them a think piece or anything.

Dan I felt the film was actually quite strong in its showcasing of the highs and lows of a relationship but i understand where you’re coming from. It did feel like the like film left allot on the cutting room floor. I think as romantic dramas are concerned, you’re being a bit too harsh on it because this is leagues above anything that’s Melodramatic like Nicholas Sparks adaptations.

giving one of the leads cancer or having their kid die is the cheapest way of emotional manipulation.

It was so boring. The acting wasn’t believable. Not a jab at the actors just bad writing. She just falls in love with him because…. Why? He’s so boring. I just couldn’t get emotionally involved at all. I love tear jerkers, this sucked.

I didn’t like how their relationship was written. They had great chemistry but poor compatibility since thier values were so different. He wanted a family and she wanted a career, with no desire for kids. They never delved into the “why”, why they held on to thier beliefs and why they both ultimately changed their minds. In real life this just wouldn’t work out right. It just felt like they both were being cheated out of the life that they had dreamed before meeting because we didn’t get to understand the personal growth they had to go through to make those changes. Compatibility for life values are important

I disagree with most of this. It’s predictable, like almost every other romance movie. You know everything that’s going to happen it just shows bits and pieces and the performances were great. If it was shot completely linear would have been even more bland. For a guy who rarely watches romantic comedy’s because I always find them so corny, really enjoyed the movie 8/10. Honestly had no expectations and had a great time. I think you wanted this to be more of a normal movie than it was

I feel sorry for this simp, all the women he loves pick their careers over him.. Almut, instead of focusing on getting better for her family, she chose her career over them. Selfish, really. He shouldn't have ignored the 🚩🚩🚩 Now his a single father.

Considering their statements some time ago about wanting to make more mainstream appealing films, I’m not surprised. I just hope they don’t lose their edge along the way.
