As a dad of 2 kids the ending to the original movie made me feel physically sick and it made my wife cry 😂😂😂. Those are the types of movies I love, something that actually leaves an imprint. The original, to me, is a movie about the consequences of being a weak man, or a “nice guy”. The old saying “nice guys finish last” is true. Lift weights, eat steak, hit the heavy bag, say no, don’t be afraid to offend people. It was a straight forward message about manhood, delivered in a horribly brutal way. The remake seems to remove that message entirely.

idk why, people complain about it all the time but studios insist on showing the entire plot in the trailer. They think audiences are stupid (well maybe a lot are). The studio also pushes for specific scenes to be filmed in an exciting way just so a clip of it can be put in the trailer with no thought on how changing that scene will affect the creators' vision. It tells people what to expect in the film so they know what they're getting into, but why they think knowing the entire plot makes you want to watch it is a mystery.

One thing that's not often talked about in regards to the original is how Danish filmmakers have a tradition of provoking the audience. People like Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg (even the classic Carl Theodor Dreyer) sometimes operate with a "fuck off" attitude that can be off-putting, and SNE can be seen as a continuation of that. I guess the remake will stand as the most popular of the two films since the original's got no catharsis to speak of, only despair.

I love them both as a double feature, watching the original first. In fact, for me it really works to think of the Blumhouse one as a sequel in which Patrick/Paddy and Karin/Ciara are literally the same characters using new aliases (or at least Patrick/Paddy). It even makes sense that their characters might look and be perceived so differently that being played by different actors works. I find this read beautifully effective with that opening sequence, too. For me, the two films work together to really deepen everything I love about this story, its characters, and its themes. I love both films more for how they complement each other. I think the Blumhouse is elevated and deepened by seeing the original first, letting it set the tone, atmosphere, and themes. However, I really appreciate the catharsis of the new version, particularly in contrast with the incredible (but extremely difficult) third act of the original. It kind of even makes it easier to recommend a double feature watch to friends who might fundamentally reject films like the 2022 original. I’m American, and though I love the impact of the original, I find this ending no less impactful. I wouldn’t describe it as “dumbed down” or even really “softened”, just different. I found it satisfying, but again, particularly in contrast and conversation with the original. I would never recommend only seeing the new one or seeing it first. Reading this as a sequel in fact intensified my experience of the central conceit about what is actually happening in this story. It almost made me want a SPEAK NO EVIL franchise or anthology series; or at least one more, with a Black couple and a kid with a rabbit doll, directed by Jordan Peele. If you’ve seen both films and read this far, you hopefully know what I’m talking about.

The original movie builds up the tension from the very beginning, adding up to it by every scene until the disturbing ending. Everything that happens just makes their stay more unpleasant and there's a sense of urgency for them to escape that never gets fulfilled. The acting in the original movie is superb. Very natural reactions, realistic, human. The remake on the other hand never manages to build real tension, as they also cut some particular scenes that were crucial for that on thw first movie. The third act includes the unnecessary -and very Hollywood - "journey of the hero" that ruins the whole plot, and at the end renders the movie as more of a twisted "Home Alone"

I went into this movie last night almost completely blind. I had only seen the trailer once months ago and had honestly forgotten it until about 20 minutes into the film when I was like “oh yeah!” I saw the original a few hours ago. My initial reaction is that while some elements were more successful in the original…the remake was just better at making me feel uncomfortable, anxious, and afraid. McAvoy is more intimidating, the cinematography is better at communicating that awkward moment, and most of all that the children are real characters in their own right in the remake and not just the set decorations they are in the Danish version. I appreciate the remake for making the children people too especially since they are what the antagonists ultimately want. Including the children in the plot actually made me care about this family in a way I just didn’t in the original. Both child actors did a phenomenal job. I haven’t seen any review even mention them at all. Their inclusion makes a major difference IMO.

Ok, here’s my question - which do I watch FIRST? Which order would yield the most additive thrills/emotion? It sounds like the remake should be experienced first, because the original would then layer on more depth and disturbing detail. I’m the kind of person who likes watching the movie first, then reading the book because it’s invariably deeper. The reverse order just makes the second thing a more shallow experience.

I'd actually recommend the original first - it's a slower build and the first two acts are very similar. Then the remake for a kind of 'alternate version.'

This movie highlights how some humans on earth are just not fighters. In modern times we have a new idea of toughness compared to how it was in the past. For example, the toughest guy I know one day told me he has never been in a fight his whole life. he said he never had a reason to as he intimidated everyone into his role. Modern day tough guys who never even fought a fist fight is how I look at this movie. Myself, I have been in many fights, some close to death though I am no soldier. But man did this movie destroy my fight mechanism. I was yelling at the screen and felt sick afterwards!

I didn't watch the remake but the original brought the message home clear and precise. There's also multiple life lessons you can learn. Can't imagine the remake adding anything other than production value and maybe just maybe better acting.

The third act of the remake reminded me heavily of "Straw Dogs" (both the original UK version and the US remake), and since much of that film is about the male fragility of its protagonist(s), making Ben more callow in the remake fit for me. I do agree the original is better, but at least this isn't a US remake of "The Vanishing" situation.

I'd seen the original after it came out while it was on Shudder (I'm pretty sure it was Shudder). So when the trailers for the new version came out, and the trailers I saw didn't mention it being a remake, I was left with quite a sense of deja vu. It's a bit crazy they remade this film after only a couple years, but it does sound like I should give the new version a shot. Thank you for looking into it, Dan.

The original danish Speak no evil is so bleak in its nihilism, turns out we didn't know we needed this companion piece until we got it! Watching both movies one after another really brings the whole package of every possible emotion a human mind can process. A tense, atmospheric thriller that will keep you on the edge, will make you twist and turn in your seat, will make you giggle at how awkwardly funny it is, and will bring out the 'oohs' and 'aahs' wherever it deems suitable. I don't know if the film was re-written by James Watkins keeping this in mind or not, but to me the reason behind the very opposing 3rd acts leading to different conclusions lies in the story being unraveled through the eyes of different protagonists. For the danish one, it was the husband who gets to know the big reveal. Here, it's the wife (Louise) and hence the story further shapes strictly as per her perception of their circumstances. Speak no evil (2024) is one of the rare cases of American remakes where it is as good as the original and justifies it's existence with full marks. The films have many scenes in common but the tone is always different so even those scenes still feel fresh to watch. Both movies are successful in achieving the exact tone and atmosphere they wanted to go for. So we get beautiful visuals of the British countryside in place of the claustrophobic visuals from Christian's film, and the ominous score is complemented with catchy earworms like Cotton eyed Joe and Eternal flame. The humor is a dominant aspect of story telling here, and you'll find yourself laughing at the most inappropriate of situations without any obvious comedy at display. It's a special kind of horror, where just the absolute lack of boundaries horrify you to the core. James Watkins has adapted the screenplay brilliantly and the direction excels with the help of a very good cast (I counted, we only ever see 8 people in the entire movie) Scoot, Mackenzie, and Aisling deserve applause for nailing their roles, as do both the child actors ( Alix West and Dan Hough, who both have meatier roles in here) but the biggest performance is known to everyone. It's James BLOODY McAvoy! If what I said till now didn't make sense to you, I'd implore you to just go and watch it for the beast he is in this film. He goes all out in a no bars held performance where he is as sinister as they come but also remains as charming as one could be. The audience really hate him but also can't help secretly admiring his oozing charisma. If Hollywood knew better, this man should've been our GOAT by this time. But really, it's a sealed deal if for nothing else then his performance alone! My rating: 5/5 with an added like, go grab your tickets now. With a tub of popcorn and some good company, it's worth every penny spent!

Trailers that give away near the entire film are the bane of our times, followed by trailers making films out to be something they are not and attrackting the wrong viewer (looking at you "The Village").

I watched the original just before I went to see the remake. While the remake family make their own fair share of unwise choices, they look like tactical geniuses compared to the utterly useless family in the original. I do think they're both solid movies, with the original being the more sinister and disturbing of the two. I understand the complaints of the remake "sanitizing" the disturbing ending of the original to make it more palatable for Americans, but the ending of the original also hinges in the parents being so unbelievably useless and not even attempting to defend themselves or their daughter. It honestly takes me out of it and leaves me more frustrated than anything else. And again, I understand the original is meant as "cultural commentary" specific to Denmark. For other people who come from more assertive cultures though, it's hard for that ending not to be more ridiculous than thought provoking. I'm actually just fine with the remake serving as a sort of what if scenario for how things could have played out if the family from the original had actually made an attempt to fight back. And if you desperately need your movies to be bleak and nihilistic above all else, the original is still there for you to watch.

I think one purpose of the original was to highlight cultural/character differences between people from the Netherlands and Denmark (directness vs complacency) and I feel it was suggesting larger consequences than just the personal.

Basically my thoughts exactly. I saw the original a week ago and the remake yesterday. The original made me feel scared, but mostly powerless. The remake had people laughing and clapping which would not happen in the original. But I'm conflicted because they removed the part that makes the original be engrained in my brain forever, I think.

Watched the original with my wife the other night, personally, i felt like it was too much of a movie trying to make a commentary on politeness inherent in Dutch culture at the expense of realistic behavior. *****VAGUE SPOILER ***** As a parent, the ending was frustratingly ridiculous and the main couple cartoonishly pathetic. It feels like realistic reactions are tossed aside in service of the “explanation” for why this is happening and as a more meta commentary on being too focused on others comfort. And no, i did not need a “happy ending” or to see the “good guys” win. I’m fine with a dark or downer ending. The Thing and The Descent (original ending) are two of my favorite horror films. But this one was just so ridiculous in regards to what the main couple allows.

When the director of the original film was asked his motivation for making it, he replied that his goal was for people to react to the film, that he didn't care so much about anything else. That he wanted to be remembered, that was his motivation. Excuse me but that reminds me of Serbian film. Why make a provocative film? There are two decisions that I cannot forgive the original movie. *Spoilers: The first is the rabbit, the second is that after having an unpleasant encounter with the antagonist, a bad dinner and a violation of her privacy in the bathroom, the woman decides to have sexual relations with her husband. A WOMAN COULD NEVER DO OR WANT THAT. The final scene is unnecessary from the daughter to the stones. Personally, I am very excited about the remake. I'm a fan of Mcavoy and Eden lake

Watched them both this week. I liked the original though I wish it "said" a bit more. Still, a very well executed and chilling movie. I can't say I have anything good to say about the remake. The first hour lacked the black comedy that made the first one work for the first hour, and while I accept that a lot of changes would be made, I hated the third act of the new one and how clean it was on every front. But I'm glad the remake got me to finally watch the original.

Thank you for this review and comparison. I'm usually annoyed when international movies are remade by the Hollywood machine because they typically do nothing with the plot or have it be transformative in any way. It comes off like a lazy ripoff for a quick buck. I'd rather just watch the original since subtitles don't bother me. It is nice to hear that the remake exists because the original is too disturbing for most mainstream audiences. I'll probably give both a shot, just not back-to-back

I would say the original has a better throughline. It knows it's theme through the entire film and delivers it in a killer gut punch as the end. A sharp social satire that is rooted in the culture of the original filmmakers who are making dark comentary on the folly of being polite. The new one is entertaining but lacks all of that. Even the theme of "death by politeness" is greatly reduced just by making the main characters American, as we have more of a reputation of being blunt or direct. Not in all cases, but going along to get along isn't really a cultural staple.

The only thing that disappointed me about the remake was I was really looking forward to watching the parents die. When they changed the end to a fight back act, I enjoyed that they stopped being so stupid, but I still expected them to die. When it became clear they were going to do the typical ending where the bad guys all die and the “good guys” walk away, I was bummed. I really only rooted for Ant the whole movie and we all clapped when he crushed Paddy’s head.

As a Dane I find it odd when remakes of films which are so full of context especially for a Danish audience are made for an American audience. With Speak No Evil, it's about how Danes in general are anti-conflict, and will cope with things outside their comfortzone taken to extreme lengths. Knowing Americans and Brits, I don't see the same impact of the context with these audiences. I am curious about how Hollywood will handle a remake of Another Round, as Danish alcohol culture is the core and center of that story, which I find very difficult to translate into a non Danish film

I haven't seen the remake yet, but what makes and breaks the original is Christian Tafdrup's direction. Tafdrup is a provocateur who's really great at making films that spark huge and fiery debates, and while I think some of his sensibilities become a bit too much in the original (e.g., the montage of the family living their ordinary life set to some very dramatic orchestral music just to hammer home the point that their life is dull), I don't know if the remake is able to replicate Tafdrup's original thesis and point with the original movie - to spark a debate about how much pain we as humans are able to tolerate to avoid embarassing ourselves. MacAvoy is a great casting for the villain, though.
