I like the idea of doing the Road to Recovery chart for one more year and then for 2026 transitioning it to just current year vs prior 5 year average. Gives a good look at how a particular year fares against recent history.

Happy to see Sonic 3 doing well. I quite liked it. Looks to be the highest grossing one yet, which is great. I’m also glad Mufasa is going to end up not being a flop. Yeah, it’ll have a noticeable drop from its predecessor, but approximately $200 million domestic/$600 million worldwide final totals according to box office trackers is still decent and three times its budget. As far as these billion dollar follow ups go it’s the kind of grosses The Marvels, Aquaman 2, and Joker 2 could only dream of, and I enjoyed Mufasa much more than those three. I also want to say thank you, Dan. So many other KZbin channels would have taken the easy, ‘Mufasa BOMBS’ clickbait route last weekend, but you didn’t. You know how holiday season box office works and said to wait until Christmas legs kick in to truly see what its outlook was. As someone who likes tracking the box office thanks for being the reputable professional you are.

Speaking of clickbait channels, there is a reason why I would never pay any attention to them as all they care about is spreading lies and misinformation if something does not fit within their narrative and agenda making them less reputable even though their comments section are always gullible to believe in anything they say without questioning their context.

Wicked is still #4 and made $26 million over this Holiday weekend including $5.8 million yesterday ( Sunday) about the same as Nosferatu. Yet Universal is going to release it on Home Video tomorrow, instead of letting it keep racking up grosses at the box office. These studio heads are idiots.

@@wfchannel4673 Studios do have deals set up so they make a greater percentage in the first 2 weeks and then it becomes more equitable for the theater owners after that period. My point was since covid, guys like Tom Cruise and Chris Nolan have had to tell the studios 'Hell no you're NOT putting my movie on home video after only a month! S/O Lupita Nyong'o who's had a good 2024 with The Wild Robot ($324m) & A Quiet Place: Day One ($262m) which did well critically & financially (grossed 4 times their production budgets). Twisters, Wicked & Beetlejuice Beetlejuice have all done incredibly well domestically but have struggled outside North America where they've made just 28-35% of their total box office which is definitely not the norm for Hollywood Blockbusters! Carry-On with its crazy 97.1m views so far should enter Netflix's All-Time Top 10 Most Viewed Movies List over the next 2-3wks!

I feel like Sonic not really having the best Christmas Day despite the positive response and the opening weekend it had followed by the rebound afterwards suggests to me that a lot of people who were interested in seeing Sonic but not necessarily die-hard fans were more or less planning around the holiday and might be a sign that the post-holiday legs may end up disappointing everyone in much the same manner the Thanksgiving releases did last month after that record-breaking weekend.

Keep the Road to Recovery chart for another year. If you do, I’d suggest not lumping 2024’s box office with 2021-2023. For 2025, it would be great to have one line for 2015-2019, one line for 2021-2023, one line for 2024, and the dotted line for 2025. Comparing 2024 to 2025 is something I’d really like to see. Looking at this week’s chart, it shows that some weeks we were above the 2021-2023 average but below the 2015-2019 average, other weeks were equal to the 2021-2023 average, and some weeks were above or below both. I’d be interested to know if next year the lowest box office week stays above the 2021-2023 average. Not equal to the 21-23 average on the low end like week 6 but above it on the low end like week 11 or 30. For 2026, you could consider doing what another commenter suggested: comparing the current year to the prior 5-year average.
