I wish my mother were still around to tell me the stories of her favorite things. She passed away when I was 28. My dad followed when I was 37. Maybe because I lost both of my parents when I was pretty young, I've always felt a keen sense that our time on this earth is short. Having to clean out my uncle's apartment when he passed brought the point home even more. I've been working through my possessions and downsizing for the past 5 years or so. I've donated or sold at least 100 bags and cartons of items and still have a way to go. I'm not just doing this for those I leave behind (I have no children, so the burden would fall on my older siblings) but for myself. I know that eventually I may have to move to an assisted living facility, and I'd rather downsize my possessions now, while I am still mentally and physically able to do so, than wait and have someone else make those decisions for me. Think of decluttering as a gift to your future self!

You and your Mom together are my favorite videos... her expressions at the end were hilarious.... " and maybe we should go to your house and do a Swedish Death! " ILOL!! I miss my Mom so much!! She saw this book reviewed on TV , Oprah maybe? And talked about it quite a bit as she streamlined our childhood home and her life while she was going blind w macular degeneration. Prior to her passing she asked each of us... her kids if they wanted anything in particular. And then she taped their name to it. Under a drawer, beneath a figurine or behind a picture frame. Later she added some sentimental note to many of the items, especially those that were gifted to her from us. It made for many cherished memories shared while clearing out the estate. And also made it far easier to donate items that perhaps had meaning or value to her... but were of no clear importance to her children or grands for the sake of posterity. What a blessing that was!!

I do think that the Swedish death cleaning method really alleviates some of the pain and burden of going through loved ones belongings. It does really make it easier for the ones we leave behind. That pulled at my heartstrings, so emotional, when you said your mom left you notes with the items for you and your siblings, that is so touching and heartwarming. I think the Swedish deal 🤣may work with certain things, for example sentimental stuff, I swear the Swedish Death Cleaning method is my method for sentimental stuff, and I think it may work for my mom too, but overall, for the most part, I think regular decluttering is perfectly fine and more than enough. Like you said, once we've officially gone through the house a couple times, than maybe we could introduce this method! And you are so sweet! Thank you! Oh, that´s very nice to see you Mom Robin and you together in the video! 😍I agree with Robin, I don´t really like the Swedish Death cleaning method...My grandmother did that in her late 75+ years (it´s so sad..) but earlier it´s better with just decluttering! You both did a great job, it´s so nice that you help your Mom with this decluttering! ❤ It´s a lot when you have collecting for so many years. It´s great if you can sell some of it, it´s very nice pieces and collections..MORE Ryans stuff! 😂😂😂 I understand the burden of taking care of the stuff after love ones passing, it takes a lot.. But it´s a part in the griefing process too, I think.. Overall I think a regular old declutter is perfectly fine I think the Swedish death cleaning is more so for the people in the winter of their life not saying you can't do it at any time but it seems to be a preferred method for when you're in the winter of your life. But yeah I don't think my mom's much for the Swedish deal, it isn't her deal 😆🤣 I think my parents have collected anything they can possibly collect LOL it is a lot to go through all of that, it's kind of fun though. But it is time consuming and of course we found more of Ryan's stuff, " better ask Ryan" 😆 I've had multiple conversations with my brother and he honestly didn't even know all that stuff was there and has said to me to just let it go unless I think it's something that maybe sentimental to him. It's so funny, my mom will hold on to it though even though my brother doesn't want it 🤣 and I think you are 1000% correct it is a part of the grieving process, but it is a relief when it's over, totally agree! Robyn + Swedish Death Cleaning. I think I might need popcorn for this one, LOL! I knew EXACTLY what she was going to say, that when she's gone it won't be her problem. I've heard that from others her age. I KNEW IT! Elvis stuff sells better in the last weeks of July and the first weeks of August, aka Dead Elvis week. Danni, if that dresser in the plate room is dovetailed, don't sand and paint it! If it's from the 60's, you should be fine to do whatever. The only plates I have are a set of 6 3D Pooh plates from when I worked at The Disney Store. Fear of dusting them prevented me from displaying them. I really do need to set them free. She let go of a LOT of plates. Think of all that space she freed up! Ryan mention! Everybody take a drink. On the towel dresser, take all the drawers completely out, wax the rails with an old white candle or use tealight, and look at the very bottom, below the bottom drawer. It's wear socks and things that get pushed out of the top drawers go to die. I'm really excited for her towel dresser. Man, I wish I could jump in to help with the electronics and DVD's. That's my wheelhouse. Ryan mention! Take a drink. Good job on the dresser purge! We see you, Robyn, and you are delightful!

That is her go to thing LMBO shes said that a couple of times, that when shes gone, its our problem then LOL pretty sure shes at least half joking, but I could be wrong 😂And I had no idea that selling Elvis plates in the last week of july and first weeks of Aug is the best time to sell, Ill definitely have to let me mom know that! I'll also have to check to see when that dovetailed dresser (I didnt even know thats what its actually called lol) was built. I wonder what year it is, but thats good to know. I really should start researching furniture and different types of furniture prior to doing any makeovers or DIYs. Used the Swedish Death Cleaning method on my mom’s kitchen and laundry room. Got rid of some old frying pans that Teflon was long gone and some ancient spices, five huge boxes to the Goodwill, two boxes of chemicals and a ton of recycle. She loved it, going back to work on her closet in February

I have never seen so many Elvis Plates in my life 😆🤣My dad is currently looking up the value of them, I think because they have all the paperwork, I think, it may be worth a little more than what she originally paid for it, but most of those plates I dont think are worth a whole lot? great video! another thing about death cleaning your mom might benefit from is the ability to identify what is actually important to her (like the baby blanket) versus things that she just has but doesn’t care about (like the plates) - if robyn isn’t here to tell you, how will you know what has actual importance, value or sentimental value. part of the burden with this volume of stuff is not knowing what is actually important to someone ❤

I really do love this method, especially for sentimental items, I don't think I will use any other method for sentimental items other than the swedish death cleaning. But I think that is a fantastic way to look at your items, it's a great idea to separate the items that are very important versus the non important items, because like you said, when we pass no one is going to know what the important/sentimental stuff is. Good job getting rid of so much today, Robin!!! Sad thing so many people got suckered into buying "collectibles" that are actually worthless. So much money wasted. Robin isn't the only person. My son collected beanie babies. Worthless. 😢 I was looking at all of the dvd's on those bookcases. Most people don't even want them either because of so much streaming, etc. I donated almost all of my dvd's several years ago as no one was interested in buying them for even $1. One just stops to think how much money we spend on stuff and never really use it enough to even get our money's worth. I think almost everyone can relate to this in some way or another. My mom passed away from cancer in 2020 and my dad went into assisted living in 2022. We just got done cleaning out the house, 4 car garage, and barn this fall. It is so exhausting for family to go through their loved ones stuff. I beg people to be thoughtful to their kids to get rid of things now before they even retire. You can't take it with you.

And I couldn't agree with you more, it's funny you mentioned beanie babies, my mom had a ton of beanie babies, in fact I think she still has a lot of them, not too long ago we were talking about beanie babies and she said the same thing, they're really not worth anything. And most of those collectible plates aren't worth anything. She thought years and years ago she was making this wise investment by purchasing all these plates especially the Elvis plates and some of them are worth a little bit but my dad looked up the value of the plates...and I don't think they're going to sell them, in fact my mom's gifting the Elvis plates to her mom and her friends, because she knows she's not going to take the time to sell them and she just doesn't think it's worth it. Same with the dvds, so many DVDs my uncle collected DVDs and like you said most people stream now, no one really uses DVDs anymore. It is so true, a lot of the stuff that we collect/have we really don't get our money's worth out of. My mom has a ton of hummels too. I think my mom, my dad and my uncle thought that they were making an investment. I think that's why I love the Swedish death cleaning so much, it really is taking the burden of your things off of your loved ones. Sending you lots of love this holiday season. My mom was so different from me and her mom, she never saved anything but pictures, I think she even got rid of our baby books🤤 I remember the books when I was grown, but when I moved her they were gone! The only thing my mom had a collection of was Royal Albert Old country roses dish set, So it was easy moving her, to come live with me. Your mom did so good! I know she feels much better! Are those guitar cases in the background wow there's quite a few of them! And what's sad is the stuff we collect and then get donated to Goodwill etc. They can only keep a short time and it gets shipped to dumps and some goes overseas to other countries to dump there!

I have a friend of mine who doesn't save anything either, I think she has maybe a couple of things that she's saved for her kids and I think a lot of that is because her mom never really saved anything for her. Some people don't like having all that stuff, my family on both sides are the total opposite, they keep everything, and that's why I was taking after them 🤣 I also think because we don't have a ton of super expensive or valuable things we value anything and everything that is attached to a memory. And yes those are all guitars and there are so, so many more downstairs. My parents have a thing of collecting things lol but a lot of the stuff, like the plates, my mom's beanie babies my mom's hummels these things aren't really worth anything. My mom apparently told me actually today that she's not selling the Elvis plates, she's just gifting them to her mom and her friends because they're not really all that valuable and she's not going to take the time to sell it. I thought that was pretty good that she recognized that though and isn't just holding on to them. But yeah a lot of it just gets placed at the Goodwill or the dump. You are so funny. My mom has much more clutter- maybe a hoader. She saves Dunkin’ Donuts and McDonald cups because she might need them. We moved her from an 8 room house to a 4 room apartment and yes moved all those cups. Every cabinet and closet had stacks of cups.
