Great job by the bass player, keeping the time with those two giants. Bill only had two more years after this, but his music turned out to the stars. Thank you for the video.

Whenever and wherever Bill and Philly-Joe played together there was magic in the music. They sound like one person playing two instruments at the same time. So cohesive and yet so free and open, but still swinging hard!

This time Bill Evans with his trio gives us again an example of his genius.

I'm glad the cameraman kept switching back and forth to Philly starting around 3:13. It's hard to beat his level of integration.

Unfortunately the out of tune piano was making Bill a bit miserable. Still beauty emerges. I was blessed to have seen Bill live twice. First time with Eddie Gomez and Elvin Jones at Radio City Music Hall and second right up close and personal with Chuck Israels and Philly Joe at the Village Vanguard. Wow! I can't believe that was over 40 years ago.

It is so irritating to have to play an out of tune piano.

Wow!! That really is out of tune. I didn’t know Bill Evans could sound that bad (in places). I don’t know if he adjusted and avoided the most sour notes or I just got used to it. So is that Philly Joe Jones and Chuck Israels?

I was blessed enough to hear Philly Joe dozens of times in and around NYC and even got to play two songs with Philly when he visited Rutgers University when I was a student in 1981. Bill however I did not get a chance to hear in person. Bill was always utmost professional and here that can be seen as he deals with a very unsatisfactory out-of-tune piano. A genius can overcome all kinds of physical limitations out of their control. He was one of the few giants capable of that kind of beauty consistently. Erroll Garner and Ahmad Jamal are two more that could do anything with the music in a breathtaking and beautiful way.

I know, it's horrible. And asking Bill to play something like that is a disgrace.
