My grandmother used to sing this to my little cousin Danny. He was born with many challenges. He was supposed to only survive until the age of 5 years. He passed at age 41. I love you, Danny-boy, today and forever

Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side. The summer's gone, and all the roses falling, It's you, it's you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow, Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow, It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow, Oh, Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so!

I had the privilege to go to the annual Rio Grande valley FFMA memorial service yesterday, after amazing grace was played on the pipes, one of the men played this song as the families were led out by officers from the respective departments. This song was the one that almost brought me to tears during the service, and if I ever learn how to play the pipes, I've decided to learn this song first.

The name of this tune is NOT 'Danny Boy' - that's the name that the lyricist, an English doctor, gave to his song set to the tune. The tune itself, is believed to have been composed by an Irish fiddler from Londonderry (Derry), hence it is known as "The Londonderry Air".
@thenextshenanigantownandth43934 жыл бұрын
The tune is from a Irish song called a young mans dream, the lyrics were written by a English man, but in tribute to Ireland, the original lyrics mention Ireland several times. It's not londonderry btw it's Derry.

The highland pipes have a range of one octave with a diminished seventh. The Londonderry Air cannot be played on the pipes without compromising the tune.
@paulodonnell9355 жыл бұрын
domhnullbeag londonderry 🙄 disgrace O'Donnell Abu Abu went the war cry
@piperbob24 жыл бұрын
The tune (not the song) was composed for the fiddle, by a fiddler from Derry/Londonderry, which of course has a longer range of notes. A piper only uses seven fingers and a thumb, so only nine notes are possible. If you get a chance to hear this tune ("The Londonderry Air" NOT 'Danny Boy', which is the song) in the pipes key of 'D', it is also 'compromised' but sounds really musical nevertheless. Remember, the chanter of the pipes has roots going back more than 5,000 years to Mesopotamia, the birthplace of civilisation. It predates, violins, pianos, guitars, other orchestral instruments, and has a proud history.

Wrong notes. It is ok to play other notes for notes you can‘t play, but they should be in the scale. That tune is written for pipes in A major. You can‘t play a g# on pipes. Don‘t use a g for that! That is wrong! Otherwise - your tuning is not good.
