To all condescending: this drummer has spent an unimaginable amount of hard work and time mastering a formulation of drumming that has changed the very idea and art in such a way, that countless others have dedicated their own time and effort just to copy the originality of his work. If nothing else, that in itself shows the authenticity and true time-spent creativity that can not be bought, only earned. So to all nay-sayers and criticizers, hold your tongue and enjoy the music.

David Merrill agreed. The haters are usually people who prefer other instruments over drums or want some kind of hyper beat that lacks uniqueness and originality. That's the thing with Danny. Tool is one of hose bands like AIC where the other instruments normally revolve around the drums and Danny does it consistently and like no other. Same reason I like Chris Adler. When you hear him, you know who it is and that's an impressive trait in drummers.

David Merrill I couldn’t agree more. I’m classically trained, and been drumming for nearly 15 years. 10 years ago I fell in love with his playing, and I’ve been studying him ever since. It’s incredible how after learning his style, music today - to play by ear- is a breeze. 4/4 ain’t got shit on me.

I was there! It was a drum clinic with Carl Palmer! Carl Palmer has the crowd eating out of his hand, and showing technique and explaining how he does what he does! Danny was so nervous! He told us at the beginning that he has to do these sorts of things for his sponsors and that he was way more nervous standing in front of us (200 ish) that when he plays in front of crowds of 15,000 people because he can hide behind his set and doesn’t have to talk! He was so humble and amazing! He is a monster, both in drum ability and physique. I’m 5’6”, so he was like looking up at a building. He played ‘The Grudge’ over the album, and 2 other songs I can’t remember. That solo, and more discussion. I almost didn’t go b/c it was on a Sunday afternoon. I would have never forgiven myself. It was amazing

For a solo, I wouldn't expect anything different from him, this is what has characterized the whole legacy of Danny as a drummer, with his unique style and intricate placement of every note. He's by far my favorite drummer, there are tons of great drummers out there and obviously everyone has their own style and taste of music and would either disagree or agree. But for sure pro danny carey, he really thinks outside the box and I love ATTEMPTING to play to their songs because it challenges me as a drummer as well. I too like coming up with something thats not a cookie cutter beat, but is at the same time tasteful to the sound of the music. I'm no pro drummer at all, quite frankly I suck, but drumming is a passion of mine and I always enjoy watching all kinds of drummers with crazy talents and abilities. But even out of all those other drummers, Danny Carey has always stood out to me. He's been very influential to the drumming world thats for sure, I don't know, those are my thoughts for whatever they're worth.

Man, it’s just something about him. I try so hard to get into other drummers even his own influences. I just have such a hard time keeping interest because Danny just pulls all my interest back into him and I’m just like how is this guy influencing me that much. Like i want his style naturally to be mine. the biggest thing I always think of when I’m trying to play like him is he always says “I play songs not beats, I always wanted to play songs even when I was a kid it’s not about the beats everyone gets caught up in the beats.” And if you isolate his drumming, you can just hear all the song in the drum track. that’s my favourite thing about him. I can only imagine how he sounded when he was in a TV band! That’s where his time is signatures come from I think it’s just he’s feeling that song so much it’s just you can’t contain that much song in a 4/4 lol i’m no pro I am very new at drumming but I’ve been listening to tool forever. He is the soul purpose why I bought a drum kit.

His playing is so fluid. I remember reading an interview he did and he explained how much he works on that. Even as an adult he was working with a drum teacher and that teacher basically taught him how to play as relaxed as possible. Danny really drove it home on how important that is to him. This solo, to me, is a perfect showcase of this.

Can't believe the video cut off. Damn! Danny is one of the most expressive and articulate Rock drummers of our time. @@jameslandon4126 You do know Danny was heavily influenced by John Bonham, right? And also, Neil Peart, Buddy Rich and many others. Let's be honest, I think Danny is the best modern drummer ever hut without his influences he wouldn't sound like he does now. Same with other drummers.

This goes to show why my thoughts that music is part of the pinnacle of the human mind, the things we can create off of pure instinct, but at the same time have so much going on in the head at the same time, if that makes any sense. People like Danny, Eddie Van Halen Mike Petrucci, John Bonham, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy page, just to name a few in the PLETHORA of amazingly talented musicians. Things like music (mainly solo's like these that are improv), Martial Arts, and some other things are just what i believe is mostly the best we humans can do amazingly well.

Everyone who's like "not impressive" "not that hard to play" is ughfufhfhhfhfhrn such a buzzkill. Man who cares. If you guys are like 12 and just started playing or something I totally get that mentality but I would expect more intelligent discussion under a video with danny. It's not about "chops" (and he has shit ton), it's about the musiciality, the dynamics, how he feels time...and more than anything that undeniable danny sound (which of course involves everything I just mentioned). I wouldn't want danny to be anything other than what he is and it surprises me how people still get up on the whole "oh if it's not a linear chop fest going on it sucks" thing. I've been a fan for almost 20 years and I still feel there's so much to learn from this guy.
