Guys, the point of this *IS NOT* that Dyer’s connection to Edward III is a common genealogical phenomenon. Of course, he is but one of innumerable descendants. The real kicker is that the man has documented evidence. How many of you downers in this comment section have such proof?

Hi Mark, for genealogical purposes we do need proof. As you rightly point out, many English persons are descended from ED III, legitimately or illegitimately. Very very few will have inherited his DNA, never mind any genes: 'royal blood' is a misnomer. Very few will find the documented evidence of descendancy to the present day; since that is rare (unless there is recent common ancestry.)

Hi Edward, I think not. If only we all can find the records! In the UK most family lines records peter out by the 1600s, if not before. The pre- 1837 (Parish)records are not easy to follow in the case of common names. Illegitimacy complicates matters unless the father is named. So the chances of finding even landed gentry with-in that time span are not good: which is why it is rare to find which lineage/s go back to Royalty. You have to be lucky....or unlucky to find such persons, depending on your views on Royalty!

Edward III is also the ancestor of Charles Darwin, Roy Rogers, Christopher Reeve, Elizabeth Montgomery, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benedict Cumberbatch, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Ellen DeGeneres and many others. Edward III's grandfather, Edward I is the ancestor of Walt Disney, Eli Whitney, Anne Hutchinson, Chevy Chase and others while Edward I's grandfather, King John, is the ancestor of Tom Hanks, Sissy Spacek, Francis Bacon (16th century), Elihu Yale, Sarah Jessica Parker and others.

If you count back your ancestors, i.e. 2 parents, 4 grandparents, you will realise you have more ancestors than the population of England in the 14th Century. Most Britons are therefore in someone related to royalty. Don't make up statistics.

Countess Palatine of Burgundy you're not rare if you're descended from him. Do the maths. You have more ancestors than the entire population in England during that time period. Almost all of England or anyone with an English ancestor are descended from royalty. It's statistically impossible not to be. What would be rare is if there was a man with an identical Y chromosome to Edward the third

Hi Michael, at the risk of being boring. I have said before it is proving the ancestry which is difficult as the records are less reliable before 1837 and the 1841-onwards censuses. By the 1500s is almost impossible unless you have found a 'Gateway' ancestor (landed gentry and the ilk) where their family trees and seats have been recorded. Even then you need to find the proper records (Burke etc.)and not 'mythological family trees,' or for that matter Ancestry and Geni trees as they are not necessarily accurate.

I'm related to Joan Beaufort The Queen of Scotland who married King James of Scotland. She is my 15th great grandmother. Her family were English and French nobles who were Kings and Queens of England and France during the 12th and 11th century and even further back. And also going back further I am related to also William the Conquerer as he is related to my 15th great grandmother Joan Beaufort. Everyone has Royal blood if they go back far enough as our ancestors double in each generation and if you go back 27 generations you would have dozens and dozens of ancestors, population back then would of been much smaller so we would most likely have a Royal ancestor
