Fun fact: The scene when Danny and the T-Birds see Sandy for the first time as a hardcore made-over Pink Lady at the senior carnival towards the end of the film, was their true reactions. The actors were not allowed to see Olivia Newton-John in her made-over bad girl image, so the shocked looked they had on their faces was their real reactions.

Wrong... The audio was recorded on the same day he died and the Elvis line was always in the song. Elvis was planned to be the Angel in the movie but turned down the part. So they put the scene in as a substitute (not sure if it was in the original stage production though). The fact that he died on the same day reportedly weirded out all of the cast members that did the recording.

So you missed it, but they were both willing to change for each other. He didn't just go to track that one time and then quit. He lettered in track (basically he did really good/went to meets probably won some races too) that's why he's not wearing his leather jacket at the end he's wearing his letterman jacket. It's an implication that he showed dedication and follow through but the cultural context is muddled the farther we get from the time. Also.. yeah the movie still has plenty of problematic elements..

The "random man" who performs Beauty School Dropout is Frankie Avalon who was a teen idol in the 50's. This movie came out in the 70's but was largely geared to those who had been young in the 50's so they would've recognized him definitely. I think Frenchy refers to him in some way earlier as well, but can't remember.

so my theory about how danny acts around sandy is that he's never experienced a proper love in his life. he's used to being a tough guy who has to act machismo around people in order to be respected. but sandy shakes that, she makes him feel soft and empathetic and so he doesnt know how to portray that side of him so he continues to act the only way he knows how which is why he continues to fuck up. he's not used to someone rejecting everything he's been conditioned to know as normal.

I kind of had a summer romance when I was 15 (almost a decade ago). Went to Australia to visit some of my Mum's side of the family and whilst I was there, I kind of started dating my cousin's best friend. We were there for a month. Had a first kiss at sunset and everything 🤣. We "broke up" the day before I left because doing long distance would have been too hard (14 hour time difference), and still talk to this day via the power of social media. I say "broke up" in quotations because we never really became boyfriend and girlfriend officially. He's currently single and still friends with my cousin, and jokingly refers to me as his first love. I mean yeah learn to take some risks and come out of your shell and all that but overall, I just hope the new look and personality was only a temporary thing and it only signified that she's learning to take some risks and try new things while still being herself. We don't know that Sandy changed. We only know that she changed her clothes. For one afternoon. She has a whole closet full of poodle skirts at home and she'll probably go back to them. But for one day she wanted to have fun with fashion and try on a wilder look. Why not? And Sandy does not do this for Danny. Danny already likes Sandy. He likes poodle skirt Sandy. That's how he met her. Sandy might just be doing this to prove something to herself.

i don't like when people take away that sandy changed for danny, because that's not what happened. but the way they show it, with sandy having a drastic outfit change, it's easy to remember oh well she changed for him. the movie could've done a better job of showing sandy changing and coming into her own more, cuz it's there, just not as blatant. and we see danny change as well, i mean he fully joined track. but again, it's not obvious. especially since the movie happens over a whole year yet you don't have a real concept of time throughout.

Sandy's group literally was denouncing everything she was telling them even though they didn't know it was Danny and meanwhile while it's obvious his friends are horn dogs I don't really see them as the type to pressure him not to have a girlfriend.

If I remember correctly, and I could be super wrong cause it’s been a while, but the movie was written by a couple of guys based on their own high school experience in the 50’s. So it’s not hard to see how it’s aged since then from that perspective of the Greaser’s all being bros and the girls usually being very catty until the end. In a lot of media over the years we tend to see women portrayed that way around each other more often then not, even when it wouldn’t really make sense. I grew up when Aaron Carter cheating on Hilarie Duff with Lindsay Lohan or whatever was a big deal, and even at that age was wondering why no one was pointing the finger at him 🤷🏻‍♀️ Even in the 70’s when it first came out on Broadway I’m sure there were differences in how it was viewed vs how it would have been viewed in the 50’s itself and even more-so now but there’s also a lot of things that can be related to as well as just a touch point on how we’ve evolved over time or even haven’t in some cases, how things like trying to slip and “aspirin” into someone’s drink has been a thing since before some of us were born. Or even changing for a guy you don’t realize isn’t really worthy of you, which in context it’s still high school with your first real boyfriend or girlfriend so you never really know until you go through it.

I think the “Grease Live!” with Julianne Hough, Aaron Tveit, & Vanessa Hudgens is a lot better because the actors look a tad more realistically their age (everyone looks SO old in this movie except for Olivia) & they mess with the ending to make it a bit less of her just changing for him. Also Carly Rae Jepsen plays Frenchie amazingly in it. A better more fun & silly musical with Olivia Newton John is “Xanadu.” Yes it’s decisive, but I think it’s amazing in its disco-ness. It’s also not adults pretending to be teenagers. 😹

@@SophiaPhannn Fair argument, but I'm gonna counter it and say ... just as Frenchy so eloquently stated, "Men are rats, listen to me, they're fleas on rats, worse than that, they're amoebas on fleas on rats." And that's a man! Teenage boys, 'cause as ridiculous as it is all of these characters are high school age, including Danny. He's a dumb 18-year-old boy. Perhaps, like Sandy, I'm too forgiving of Danny's mistakes. I like to think that he learned from those mistakes and they lived happily ever after. It's the 50s so they probably got married soon after high school and punched out a few kids before the age of 25. Jinkies! I can't even say to look up the deleted scenes for the 'fill in the blanks' between the dance and the drive-in cause they do not exist. But I imagine Danny called her the next day, apologised, and then asked her on a date to the drive-in. Sandy being 'Hopelessly Devoted' gave him yet another chance cause young love... A scene like that would be nice, but then the movie would be as long as Titanic, so you're forced to use your imagination to fill in the holes. P.S. It's hard to dance with a cardigan on! haha P.S.S. No matter what, it's a great and classic flick and we can all agree on that ONJ stole the show! Rest in 'Magic', Dame Olivia Newton-John

Grease was my absolute FAVORITE movie as a child. I was far too young to truly understand the concept of the movie or any of the jokes but I adored it. I watched the vhs every single day, maybe sometimes twice a day, for years until the tape ripped and was unwatchable. I watch it from time to time now and its amazing how much I couldnt understand as a child. RIP Olivia Newton John. The woman i was named after.

I was exactly the same, watching it but not being of the age to understand it at first. We had four movies on VHS that we watched many times over. They were Grease, Grease 2, Annie and The Sound of Music. My parents both passed away in the last few years and they still had the VHS tapes.

Yeah I think the big flaw of the movie was not showing how both of them were not being true to themselves. Like show more how Sandy finds the popular crew to be bland and how she admires the pink ladies but can’t really hangout with them to much bc of her parents or something. Then Danny can be shown making friends on the track team and dismantling his notions of toxic masculinity.

Actually your point about them dressing like the teachers at 17:43. Yes. Teen fashion didn’t become a “thing” until about the late 60s, so 1950s teens dressed pretty similarly to adults. Also I think showing Danny at the end with a cardigan with a big letter R shows that he did stick with a sport and got a varsity letter from it.

Changing your style of clothing for someone is not the same as changing your values. Also Danny was willing to change to fit into Sandy's circle and she was willing to do the same for him and I think that's ok. I'd like to think they both stayed through to themselves in the end though but that was just a fun little compromise because they really were at the end of the day from two different worlds.

I didn't see it as Sandy changing for Danny. I saw it as for while, she felt unsure about herself feeling like a bit of an outsider among their group of friends and wanted to show there was more to her than the sweet, wholesome good girl everybody saw her as. I think by transforming into the greaser girl, she got a chance to show another facet to herself, expressing her sexy side and inner bad girl that she probably had deeply rooted in her all along. That is confirmed in the reprise of the Sandra Dee song. Plus, during their song "You're the One That I Want" she is the one that is sort of calling the shots, insisting that he shape up, get his act together and change some of his immature ways, because she wants a man not a boy and basically, she has standards. Danny is aware of all of this and agrees he needs to get himself in order if he wants another chance with her. Lasty, I believe Danny taking off his letterman jacket shows that he will never be a preppy jock just like Sandy taking off her greaser jacket and then not knowing what to do with her cigarette at first shows she will never really be a greaser girl.

Good lord...Sandy has self-respect. Yes, it's dangerous to be devoted to someone who keeps making these screw ups, but she can't help how she feels, especially as a teenager. But she had self-respect because she always gave him a chance on HER terms and stood up for herself when she was being disrespected. No self-respect would imply groveling or letting him say and do whatever, which she did not. Her "change" at the end seems to be more her taking a risk and hopefully not permanently smoking. She enjoys the outfit. She even says in the song, "To my heart I must be true," which implies she'll still be herself, even if giving him a taste of how hot she is...'cuz he'd better shape up. And Danny isn't "trash." Yes, he could be an ass through the movie, but he showed follow through when lettering in track (something that isn't easy to do btw). He probably quit smoking to do it too which is a big life change. He genuinely loved her but he needed to drop the douchey facade in front of his friends. And while we never see anyone's family in the movie, it's implied there's some problems with parents that led him (as well as other T-Birds and Rizzo) to act out. Doesn't make it ok, but it doesn't make them trash either.

26:51 I never really thought too much about this reprise until I saw Jojo Siwa & Jenna Johnson do a Foxtrot performance to it on Dancing with the Stars last year. The emotions they gave the characters as they danced made me really appreciate this part in the film/musical. This moment was actually a very beautiful climax of Sandy & Frenchie's friendship. It's not flashy and hyped up like the ending where Sandy & Danny make their relationship official...it's a quietly powerful show of non-judgmental and supportive friendship. I think they'll be friends for decades; long after Sandy inevitably gets sick of Danny's immaturity. I am still annoyed that it signifies Sandy basically deciding to change to meet Danny almost the entire way instead of him committing to meeting her in the middle, tho. Frankly, if he fell for her as she is at the start of the movie; it was unnecessary for her to "change" anyway. HE was the one presenting false and misleading images of his personality and vibes over summer. Imo, the onus was on him for any changing just becuase Sandy never misled him on who she was when he fell for her; unlike him. He may have been less guarded and more genuine when away from his friends over the summer, so maybe not all of that summer romance was deceptive. But it's clear he still prioritizes how he appears to his friends over being mature enough to be open and genuine with her. He was SO CLOSE. It's disappointing that he immediately reverted when he saw her makeover. He could have easily appreciated her efforts and still stuck with his..... Anyway, she changed her vibes for the sake of his aesthetic, and he had temporary experience with change, when you get down to it. I wouldn't care so much if it was more for herself than mostly for the sake of "keeping" him.

She says that it was something she experienced herself and it was seen more as playful than as assault. She told me that she's glad consent is taken more seriously now but she's not surprised that a movie set in this time portrays him that way. Then she made a dirty joke about some of the men she dated and I wanted to puke.

LOL! There used to be an over-the-counter medication for psoriasis and the slogan in their TV commercials was, "Do YOU have heartbreak of psoriasis?". The 50s were before my time, but I think they must have still been using that slogan in the 60s or 70s, because I remember it. Anyway, that's why Frenchie asks Sandy if she has psoriasis since she mentioned heartbreak. The guardian angel wasn't just any "random ass man"; he was Frankie Avalon who was famous in the 50s for his teen beach movies with Annette Funicello and had several hit records. They cast a lot of stars from the 50s as adults in the movie. I'm not sure, but I think the dance they were doing when you asked might have been the Jitterbug (though I think it originated in the 40s). The significance to the waitresses was, first, the white haired waitress is Joan Blondell, an actress who was at her peak in movies in that time, so they probably had to pay her more than most cameos, so they probably wanted to get their money's worth. And second, the thin, dark haired waitress on the left is John's older sister, Ellen Travolta. Plus I think it's kinda sweet that the waitresses know the kids well enough that they're rooting for them.

I’m not a huge fan of this film/musical either. I do acknowledge it’s a classic, and has a cute story. I’m likewise not a huge believer in changing oneself for others, let alone a significant other or potential. That said: 1) They’re high school kids, so “change” in this is more specifically in both willing to be more like what the other signals they idealize in a partner. 2) Danny *does* try to change himself for her as well, and it’s not merely one-sided, signified by his attaining the letterman sweater. 3) Sandy smokes a cigarette but it’s more of an affectation, and a momentary one as she quite quickly puts it out. Her “change” is also pretty stylistic and in appearance. Nothing prevents her from changing her style back. Most significantly, while her appearance is “bad girl”, her side of the lyrics she sings also makes clear that, yes, her heart is set on him, but he also needs to “shape up” in that she’s setting boundaries/conditions on her expectations of him and is communicating that to him in her flirtations, and this is more assertive than she was in her prior, more doormat, persona. And that’s good, as well as something Danny apparently finds attractive.

For the dancing competition, I think Danny either: A) Got so caught up in the competition aspect he didn’t realize Sandy was eliminated, or did realize it but winning had already become his goal B) Thought being the winner was what would attract Sandy the most even if he won without her, while Sandy was just wanting to have fun and enjoy the moment together

One thing that bothers me about this movie is how everyone that talks about this movie, and even the movie itself, treats the situation like all the problems with Sandy and Danny’s relationship is entirely Danny’s fault. Granted, he did many immature, idiotic, and even slightly scummy things along the way. But Sandy isn’t entirely innocent in this relationship either. Yeah, Danny’s dance with Cha Cha was pretty bad, but in all fairness, he was caught off-guard, while dancing in front of the entire school, and on TV. That’s a difficult situation to just drop everything and leave! Sandy, on the other hand, goes out with a random jock, pretty much just to make Danny jealous!

Nice review but it would have been nice if you knew the movie better. You need to watch it a lot to know Danny dated and slept with Cha Chi and Rizzo. That's why he said he's not into sloppy seconds. And I'm not trying to excuse it but Danny is used to girls putting out so although he was a jerk with Sandy he did apologize for the way he treated her when they first saw each other and he did change for her too. Don't believe Sandy gave in to him and he still came back around wanting to be with her despite knowing how she was. I'd like to think he respected her after that. In real life probably not but Its a MOVIE let me believe the UNBELIEVEABLE!

The way I see it, Sandy isn't really the way she wants to be. She's been raised strictly so she doesn't really have an opportunity to discover her own self. Danny didn't tell her that she has to change, it was at her own will. She's in a phase that she will explore now to try and search for her true self. We have id, ego, and superego. In Sandy's case, she have so much of that superego and when we have so much superego it could keep us away from the things that might probably make us happy. It's like we are a prisoner. On the other hand, Danny have so much id and having too much id can lead to self destruction and can hurt the people around him. At the end, they both found a way to balance those things out. My only problem with this movie is the SA part
