Being an Afro-Filipino (plus Native American and Korean) kid with a Japanese American mom and white dad from adoption, this Cinderella meant so much to me. A lesser production would have just had a black woman as Cinderella and called it progressive. and it was made in the 90s when racebending wasn't done to be woke and bow to sjws. before the 2010s (especially starting arounf 2013) racebends were simply "what if this character was another race". Now it's "racebend every white character in existence to make SJWs happy".
@trashgoblin11822 жыл бұрын
@@finland4ever55 What makes the two different? The race bent characters I've seen are no different than this musical. "Every white character in existence" this sentence is just blatantly wrong. In fact, I've actually observed the opposite. I'll use the various marvel movies as an example, as it's one of the most popular franchises in the world as of now. In the entire MCU and X-men movies, there's two black characters that acted as protagonists and one asian protagonist, one of whom technically had to share the spotlight with a white lead. In contrast to the, what? Twenty something films starring white characters? Not to mention Star Wars, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, I could go on and on. There's certainly no shortage of white representation in the mainstream. In the marvel franchise they actually white washed America Chavez to be a lighter skinned girl with straight hair as well as turning Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver white when in the comics they're Romani. They also whitewashed Sunspot in the New Mutants movie, he's black in the comics but lily white in the movie. Please inform me what "SJW race bending" you've encountered as well as the thousands of white characters that are seemingly dissapearing by the masses

Oh we will, the question is will it NOT be cringey and feel cheap? An excuse for the execs to pat themselves on the back? What's so easy to overlook about this Cinderella is why this WORKS so well? The answer CHEMISTRY! It's because the cast gravitate towards each other in the best way possible. It feels natural. I can believe Whoopie is the Filipino prince's mom because when they interact she's not just warm and motherly in a superficial surface manner but in a much deeper way that's hard for non parent actors to replicate. (Even then it's easy to fall flat) Same with the King, he really FEELS like the prince's dad. Bernadette has this fond, motherly exasperation around Minerva that it's easy to believe she's her mother. Again CHEMISTRY!

FUN FACT: Apparently the shoes actually did legitimately fit Bernadette Peters by pure accident, and I think they DIDN'T fit Brandy. I dunno if the scene in the film was written after that was discovered or it already existed and it was sheer coincidence, but given how little money they were given for this film, my assumption is that the scene probably already existed and it's just the most hilarious happenstance that the shoes happened to fit Peters. Also also! It WAS made for TV, but I think they nearly had a theatrical release because it was so popular or something. It didn't end up happening obviously because it ended up getting decided that because the film had already been made for TV instead of theaters, it wouldn't quite work as well on a theater run. It being kinda small scale was part of its charm, but it WAS massively popular when it was released. It just hasn't been given as much attention since it aired as it should have by Disney. I think the reason Brandy works in this film is because her awkward acting fits into the character they wrote (Cinderella's very sheltered and doesn't really know how to interact with other people well), and they adjusted all of the theater songs to sound more hip hop/r&b, so her more pop/r&b/hip hop style fits into the arrangements they wrote, even though most of the other actors have a more theater-style to their voices. I don't think the stage production even COMPARES to this one, it's so messy with its weird "kindness" storyline, trying to add in so many extra things with the political sidestory and the ball is just WACKY. This one is absolute perfection, like it's simple, yes, but I think that works for Cinderella. Not every story needs to be extra complicated and this one hits just the right beats for the romance to feel believable and heartfelt and every character has a moment to shine for what they are. It's also HILARIOUS in a way literally no other Cinderella I've sen so far has managed to be. It also really captures a feel of being a stage musical caught on film in some ways, especially seen in the ball sequence as you mentioned. It's got CHOREOGRAPHY to it that feels exactly like what you would find in a real stage production, just with some cool camera angles added to it to enhance it. And the costumes are GORGEOUS quality and design, there's thought put into the color choices and how they fit in or don't with each other. I am also fully willing to believe that Cinderella's dress was probably originally going to be white until it became a DISNEY production and they swapped it to blue to fit in with their marketing and they couldn't then change the extras' dresses to a new color scheme. I think their color schemes were meant to match the King/Queen because they're all sycophants trying to be the next princess and fit into this family while the Prince and Cinderella always match each other color-wise and he has a WHITE JACKET (they just threw in the pale blue vest to match her dress). That's my theory, anyway. But yeah, the other two R&H TV movies, the stage production, any other Cinderella movie made ever? Boring. This one is peak Cinderella, hands down, no questions asked.

Obviously you CAN see her in the shoes at a few separate points so I'm assuming they had something to give Brandy at some point, but. I could be a bit off in the retelling of this story, too! I'm so glad more people are watching it now because it deserves all of the praise it's getting! Brandy and Whitney Houston were my favorite singers and I loved seeing them here, and all of the other characters are amazing! This is diversity done right and Brandy is the true first black Disney princess!

I grew up watching this on TV and as a young Black girl it was so inspiring to see, what I considered, the 1st Black princess. It came on regularly on TV in the 90s because they wanted it to be accessible to everyone, not put behind a ticket "paywall." But I think many (particular non-Africa n American) didn't know about it or really care as much. I know everyone in my family watched this religiously!

Okay, girl, you are a QUEEN. This movie was my favorite Cinderella growing up, responsible for introducing me to Whitney, Brandy, AND Bernadette. Also, I know I'm not alone in this prince being my gay awakening. Oh, and, Sophia, if you need someone to sing the boy parts for you, I volunteer.

I even sang "In My Own Little Corner" for my audition to a musical theatre school. It's just *chef's kiss*. And the crush I have had on the prince is still going strong yo. I was crushing on the prince and I think my sister was crushing on Brandi 😂

Fun fact:. Whitney was originally going to play Cinderella, but the movie kept getting pushed back. By the time they the movie was made, she was a 33 year old mom and felt they Brandy would be better for the role. Brandy agreed to take the role, but only if Whitney would play the fairy godmother.

Though it's a start to TV budget - I am obsessed with the costumes and production design! Such a wonderful sign of the times and ages pretty well! (also the casual inclusion like the background actors - I don't really see that in films around now). On that point look at the black background actor on the left @19:37

This was my first Cinderella movie. My family was living in England at the time, but my Grandmother recorded the TV special on VHS and mailed it for us grandkids. My sister and I love this movie, we were so excited when it was released on Disney plus. I always say “Ever after” is the best Cinderella movie, story wise; but this Cinderella is my personal favorite, no matter how cheesy it is 😂 Also, as lovely as Brandy's voice was then, she has only become better as the years go by. She did a medley with Todrick Hall to celebrate the release of this movie onto Disney plus, called "Cinderella medley (starring Brandy)".

The part, when the king says “if I were a young man”, I’d…, and then the queen says “you’d what dear?”, and then he paused for a brief moment, and then said “well, I’d be a young man” and then they laughed 😂

The reason why Brandy is the best Cinderella is because she was sincere and vulnerable in her performance. So much of her real personality was in Cinderella.

Fun fact, there really wasn't much for Bernadette Peters to sing in R&H Cinderella which they all agreed was a travesty so they added the song, "Falling in love with love" which was from another musical called The Boys from Syracuse which was a musical from the 1930's based on Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors. The song was also written by Richard Rogers and fit perfectly with the Evil stepmother concept and with the style and feel of the rest of the songs in Cinderella. It was such a good choice that most people didn't know it was not original to R&H Cinderella :)

The lyrics, however, are not by Oscar Hammerstein, but by Richard Rodgers' first lyric-writing partner, Lorenz Hart.

Honestly I Like how Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella is not afraid to be feminine. She can be strong and determined and still want to find true love and imagine herself as a princess. This whole Not like other girls Camila Cabelo thing is so tiring

One of my favorite things about this movie is how much personality each character was given. The characters aren't just token stereotypes like in the original movies, the Queen actually being present and- alive💀, the prince not just whining about how he doesn't wanna get married because he wants to be free and not settle down (unlike some crappy remakes, etc), it's just so nice. Also I love that they decided to do a blind casting, because I was able to just love the movie more as a kid and connect to it, loving the characters more(even though I'm 15). Not to mention the music, like- c'mon. It's just perfect.
