I realized Gene was a good bassist back in 75-76. In my mind Detroit Rock City was the final proof of his bass playing prowess. I saw Gene playing with KISS multiple times in the 70’s and 80’s and was very impressed with his abilities to sing, lead and harmony, while doing acrobatics maneuvers in platform heels and playing booming bass lines. Back in the day (1975-77) it was common to accuse KISS of not being proficient with anything except wearing makeup but there was a reason I went to see them more times than any touring band of that era. I remember schoolmates saying Gene sucks and Geddy Lee, John Paul Jones, Chuck Rainey, Brad Hamilton , Bootsy Collins, Verdine White, Greg Lake, Stanley Clarke, Larry Graham, Jaco Pastorius, etc.,etc. Gene wasn’t those guys but he brought an entirely different flavor to the dinner. At one time he was a very exciting and innovative talent.

That was Genes strength, not being like anyone else. Not sounding like anyone else. He and Paul both have voices you cant mistake for anyone else. Genes is unique enough that he didnt need to sound like someone else.

I told him I have listened to KISS since 1976. He gave a humble little bow and said "Thank you". Then my colleague came out and he looks at us both and says "So....how long have you two been a couple?" lol He was just a funny low key guy and he fist bumped us when he left.
