Forcing people to invest resources in Pokémon for a one time single cup is such predatory game design. Like anyone who defends the cup are the people who have never invested in those kinds of Pokémon before, so to them it’s all good because they can continue to use those Pokémon in future cups. But if you already have these Pokémon built, it’s literally just a massive resource sink that feels terrible. So dumb.

This is my second season, and this cup has easily been my favorite both times. You’re at a constant disadvantage as a new player because you haven’t had years to catch optimal IVs, get community day moves, etc. That script flips for one week. Veteran players have 70 days and millions in stardust to figure something out for 3 mons & this season everyone has at least an annihilape as a start point.

Exactly. I was stuck at 1900 in the remix cup as I only have 5 built pokemon but now I am at nearly 2200 in 2 days with that same team.

yes and no on veteran players have the advantage. People like me who live in very very very small towns, are the only one playing the game in the town, so there are only a few spawns. Even the ball park that is a nest is extremely empty compared to other nests. so even tho I've been playing since day 1 of the game's release, I don't have the best mons, I barely have any decent mons, and due to constant meta changes, all my dust has gone to waste just trying to play catch up only to fall behind again when a new movie or a new mon comes out and makes whatever i built completely useless. So yeah, it's nice that new players get the catch cup, but having at least the great league around during that time would be nice for the veterans who are in my situation as well cause I literally have 0 pokemon for any catch cup.

I feel like this is an unpopular opinion, but I agree with you. When I face opposing XL or Legendary pokemon its an exception rather than a given like it is with the Open Great League. I've certainly seen a lot more of the pokemon clearly built for one of the recent meta cups, like Mantine or Steelix, something from a recent community day like Incineroar or Victreebell, and I've seen some pokemon without Community Day Moves. Then again, maybe things are different at higher ranks. I'm only Ace and the meta seems healthy here, but I bet the ranks approaching legend are chock full of people who decided to really invest in climbing during this cup.

@@shawngallagher8764 Thats a bad naming choice by nintendo making new players always ask the same question. Pokemons come in different sizes xxs,xs,normal,xl and xxl like shirt sizes. The size of the pokemon is purely cosmetic and does not offer any benefit to the pokemon. Heres the naming error I spoke earlier: pokemons can be powered up by regular candy until level 40, from level 40 to 50 you have to use XL candy. XL candy is rarer and obtainable past player level 31. And a pokemons level directly impacts its pvp performance. Because of their naming, players call both a fat pokemon xl and a regular size level 50 pokemon xl.

Dan, this season i stopped playing 2 months ago. In the 3rd week of the season, during the UL Premier, i climbed to 2730, and the day after i went down to 2350. It’s enough for me. I will never play GBL again. My mental health has improved a lot since that day: no more anxiety, no more frustration. GBL is not healty

I hate that Niantic keeps bringing back catch cup. It just feels like a cheap way to make you waste your resources. You can still make it, we have one more week with all leagues, so maybe it’s best to just get to the mid 2800s and stop there until the leagues rotate. Just set yourself up to hit it last week when you can use all your mons. Also with the charge tms, I’ve heard a good suggestion with how they should change them. Each time you use a tm it could cycle through the moveset. Say Annihilape for example. You’d start with close combat, then you’d use a tm and get night slash. Then you’d get shadow ball, then ice punch, and then back to close combat. That way you’re guaranteed to get the move you want eventually and it’s not all luck. Good luck Dan! The charged TMs used to rotate through the moves in order, so you would know how many you needed to spend to get to your move. The "random" selection order honestly doesn't work one bit. You end up burning way more TMs than necessary to get the move you want.

Last season I was in the position you now find yourself in. I usually hit Legend with about 4 weeks to spare but for whatever reason it didn't happen for me, so I had to play Catch Cup. My advice is to just go out and find meta mons that you're comfortable with and don't worry too much about IV's. I stormed to Legend using a Rank 1409 Skarm and Rank 726 Lanturn. This season, I was more prepared. Saved mons throughout the season and hit Legend in 12 sets of Catch Cup.

There was someone in his comments a couple days ago who proudly said that they tanked just so they could wall people trying to climb. Said they had Rank 1 of the top 5 meta mons. Pokemon Go has the most toxic community I've ever seen in a game. Niantic should take out deranking. Once you hit a level, you're stuck in that level.

I only built one Pokemon specifically for the Cup, but it's a weird one that I had never built before. The other two Mons were built during the season, although one of them was an IV upgrade replacement for a 94 that I was using. How do I record my matched to submit? I agree with you about the charge TM issue, I have at least a dozen Pokémon powered up and double moved but I just can’t get the right moves on them to use them. Recently when I finally caught a good IV Annihilape I got so frustrated after using all my TMs on him and then going a bunch of sets dry on getting new ones I just elite TMed shadow ball onto the thing out of sheer frustration.

A few people seem onto this, electric is really good in this cup because of all the Mantine, Mandibuzz, and Feraligatr. I don't value elite fast TM that much so I built a Charjabug. If you don't want to spend the ETM, Unova Stunfisk can probably be used.

I played this game religiously from 2016 till the late 2023. Then all of a sudden, I just stopped and haven't touched it for around 5 months now. Great league can always be tackled. But I think the XL candy grind for the masters and Ultras has probably been too much even for someone who used to play a lot of this game. Still keep in touch with your content bro. I think content creators have a different perspective from normal GBL players. I regularly delete charge TMs. I have 700 in my inventory and whenever I get more than that I delete down to 700. I used to cap it at 800 but wanted the extra space. The need for content creators to build every single quasi-meta pokemon plus needing to use them for streaming to TM for things like copycat challenges is vastly different from how most people play.

Some players are going to re-build Mons they already have, and even spend Elite TMs for a cup that is just one week. That's on them. I can only see myself playing Catch Cup and burning the resources if there are Mons I am trying to build anyway for the rest of the season and beyond. But there's nothing from this season I'm trying to build for anything. My best Annihilape was from a previous season, same with my best Mantine. Saving the dust for some other things that are also prior-season catches, and certainly not going to burn it on a meh duplicate for a week. Stardust, while plentiful, is finite. As are TMs.

I enjoy the catch cups...and knowing they're coming ahead of time, one can plan on saving things to possibly use. I knew I was going to go for little catch cup - so I kept every Seel, Bronzor and Mankey (to turn into annihilape). I used a 13 attack Bronzor so it cost under 100k dust to power up AND second move....in all, my little cup team cost just over 200k dust. Considering we get 3600 dust for a win, and around 3000 for a set - you're getting over 30k dust for a day of gbl....every day. We get stardust all day, every day - so unless one is obsessed with maxing out random pokemon, they should have more than enough dust to allocate to making a few for a catch cup....and it's paid back just by playing your sets. Unless you are one of those crazies that makes a marill/smeargle team - that's a crazy unnecessary amount of dust to throw into a one week cup.

In comparison to new players old players have that advantage of possessing thousands of candies for many pokemons. So you catch a fuecoco and you can evolve it to skeledirge in a minute and you don't need many tms or elite tm for the best moveset for it or hundreds of stardust. And yes, it could be a skeledirge you use just for this cup and then transfer, and I don't see a problem in that, cause old players do have more resources and more experience to play better, so... I feel like it's a matter of not wanting to make any effort rather than anything else.

Normally I would agree, I’m a player in the middle. I’ve been playing for a while but not ages. I have an ok roster but very little stardust. Last catch up I did terribly, but seems I have lucked out this time with stunfisk (N), Skarmory +Feralgatr (literally the only mons I’ve built up this season) And haven’t gone under 3-2 for any set. Last 3 sets were 13-2. (Very surprising considering I’m a very average player 😂)

Made it to legend over the Go Battle Weekend and now everything is for fun.

The lag IS terrible sometimes but Catch Cup is a great opportunity for new players to make a name. Diehard PVP players can't rely on their years-old teams and new builds are being used to spice things up. If people dislike it, opting out of Catch Cup is a good idea

I had switched my Galvantula over to energy ball/lunge for some cup and it took me easy 15 tms to get back discharge. Just cycled Ball and Bug bite over and over. Hell I had to use an Elite Charged yesterday to get drill run on my A-Slash for this cup cause it was the best option I had and ran out of Tms trying to get it.

I ain't a legend player (stuck on ace 😅) & the catch cup is 50/50 either I try something new or hope I have the pokemon caught this season ready for that catch cup. For instance, wanted to try out crocolar so powered that up & first time I am trying out lickatung (got 1 that doesn't require too much stardust & XL to power up & it's 98% 14-15-15 so...) & poliwrath 🤷‍♂️ hoping to AT LEAST get out of ace rank 😂 I got more pokemon but I don't know.... in 2200-2350 range atm 🤔🤷‍♂️

I am loving this cup, but it’s because this is my first season pvping, so I have a lickitung lmao. Two positive sets away from Veteran, and if I really push I’m sure expert is possible. You have the stardust, it’s not like you should ever have to stress over this cup!

@@sirsilco I had caught (and also traded back and forth with someone who was catching) hundreds of lickitungs, as they have been around all season. I walked with it as a buddy for the final 50 or so XL candy too, and did a lot of distance trades where i would get guarenteed XLs

They are gatekeeping like crazy this season. I’ve made legend 10+ times. I get into the 2900s and get slapppped by the algorithm, sometimes to teams that are so perfectly aligned they don’t feel real.

Niantic uses these catch cups to drain players' resources. I was at 2300 elo and could only make a mis-match team. I faced top teams and just got wiped out. I dropped so much elo but now playing the same type of teams. I've given up on ranks and elos. It feels a relief 😂

I am not ganna bother with the gl catch cup but I am rocking the little cup with bronzor, Marill and shuckle. I will record my battles from Sunday. I’m also working at getting a lock-on/ flying press smeargle but dunno if I will get lucky and get it

This is my third or fourth season of playing with the goal of improving and this season was tough for catch cup having a lot of mons already made or caught previously, don’t want to make repeats or inferior versions.. now I’m out of dust and have shit mons bc I invested poorly for this cup 🤷‍♂️ next season maybe I’ll break out of 2000

I just kept anything that was mediocre but close to the 1500 mark throughout the season. I was burnt the last time around on this stupid cup and didn't want to make the same mistake. I finally built my lickitung so I'm using cheat codes with skeledirge, liki, clodsire. My mon's stats are crap but it doesn't really matter. I paid the dust tax and built a shitty skele and clod. The team is weak to screen lags and game lockups so you know...watch out for that...

Be mad at yourself if you want to be mad, you haven’t hit legend before this week. You have valid points with how the game plays and the lag but having a few extra pokemon here and there to power up if need be isn’t a crazy concept. If you didn’t want to do that then don’t play a week and relax and try next week with all leagues available. You’re clearly burned out so taking a week off might be good for you.
