Beyond the Hype. I created this series as there is a lot of click bait and false impressions of pokemon and I want to give you a real in depth analysis of whether a pokemon is worth spending dust and candies on.

Regarding the complexity of GBL vs the rest of the game: As a professional software developer, you are right. The battle league is likely much more expensive (in terms of software development resources) than stuff like releasing and organizing flock together event. And also, likely drives less revenue (again, as you said, just by looking at engagement numbers). If I were a TPM in Niantic, I would likely also advocate for spending less time there and more time organizing events that justify paid tickets. Which I think is the truth behind the claim that GBL players don't engage with the game in the way Niantic wants them to. It is not just about doing raids or not, but rather about your approach to the entire game. The players they are interested on are casual players: They go to raids to fill the dex or to get a shiny; pay for one every other ticket; go out every now and then with their kids to catch some mons; and don't have high expectations of the tap-tap mini game other than it lets them showcase their favourite catch. It is not only that those players do raids and go out, but rather that they are cheap to maintain: They will tolerate (and maybe not notice!) expensive problems to fix with the game because it doesn't affect their gameplay. Players that engage primarily with GBL are a different beast. They are likely min-maxing a lot of aspects of the game (from IVs, to the amount of time they have to spend in the app, to details on how battles work). Because of the amount of work that goes in min-maxing for competitive reasons, they are also more affected when the game doesn't operate like it is supposed to: If I spent three months looking for the Annihilape that breaks bulk points against Lickitung, I am gonna be pissed off as hell when lag prevents me to win the one shield scenario against the Lickitung that I purposely baited with Annihilape. My expectations from the game are higher than my niece's expectations. I want a real time battle game to not lag. She wants to catch a shiny Gallade. Thus, GBL players are more expensive to maintain, even when you accept that they will also grind outside and at raids. They are DEFINITELY not casual. Decisions like the pretty backgrounds over GBL lagging are likely made with those nuances in mind.

So true. What's weird is most of my friends who don't play gbl. Play much less than my friends who are looking for the best IVs. I grind for IVs, shinies, and rare characters.

@@joaquinnavajo3939 Yeah! Exactly! And that is part of the calculation too. Niantic is no longer a "scrappy startup." They need to go public or get acquired. They need to start to justify revenue. That means that while in early days metrics like engagement and total number of players were important, these days metrics like "infrastructure cost per player" are more important. Casual players that play mostly during (paid) events are likely more profitable that someone who does all their sets, grinds daily, and optimizes how they use their coins. I bet that just the server cost of the GBL backend is high enough to hardly justify revenue it generates. I cost Niantic more infrastructure dollars than Bob, who doesn't care about IVs, plays to find shinies, and religiously gets every community day ticket.

But it's pvp players who are ready to do hundreds of raids to catch a perfect Mewtwo and collect enough candies to max it out for master league. I'd bet that most $$ for raid passes comes from pvp players.

But they can't really glance over the GBL aspect of the game now, no matter how much expensive it is. They have made Pokemon Go one of the events at the official Pokemon world championships and will definitely get decommissioned if stuff like lags and all messes up the official championships. I mean ofc they can withdraw from the tournament from next year onwards if GBL is like, really costly for them to maintain, but it's still a serious matter.

Dan, I've got a great idea for a series you could do. Since your ELO fluctuates, you see a bunch of different skill levels in GBL, and you might be pretty good at guessing people's ELO/ranking (ace, veteran, etc.) How about taking viewer submissions, 5 or so per video, and making a video trying it out? Could be pretty interesting.

The problem with the Catch Cup is that it is the only option. I get having the cup to appeal to new players, but it really doesn’t appeal to people who already have their Pokémon built. I don’t have an issue with the Catch Cup. I have an issue with the Catch Cup being the only option. The last two seasons I didn’t play the entire week of Catch Cup, and I’m typically someone who does all my battles every day. I’m trying it out this season though because I got a bit lucky and have a Wigglytuff, Annihilape, and Galarian Stunfisk… but that’s all I have. Once I start getting hard countered I’ll probably take the rest of the week off.

I faced a legend player in the low 2000’s. It’s embarassing that people would tank THAT low to farm dust. Legend players can easily win against experts but picking on Ace players like me is cringe.

This season is the season that I got to legend for the 5th time and I’m in the 2200’s right now playing shadow groudon in the back 😅 Don’t get the wrong idea. I do not tank on purpose. It’s just that when you like to play stupid Pokémon like Alolan exeggutor with Draco meteor in the back, you’re going to drop elo. I usually don’t run super meta mons after legend because I want to have FUN. This leads to me ending the season at around 23-2400’s most of the time because I spend the rest of the season goofing around after hitting legend. This unfortunately leads me to nuking a lot of unfortunate Ace players but hey, what can I do 🤷‍♂️ I just wanna drop meteors with my palm tree. Also, if your sabeleye or talonflame gets one shot in the end game by a meteor because you spent all of your shields early game that’s YOUR fault 🫵😈 If you safe swap a Lanturn and not expect it to get hyper hard countered by a palm tree that’s also YOUR fault 😈😈 Get better at gbl so this doesn’t happen to you 😌🙏

Question : Why do you think this cup is for newer player? From my pov this cup is just here to suck out dust/candy from pvp players and Niantic does it to keep the grind mechanic going. For them the catch cup is perfect to force them out and grind

Although newer players could spend dust on a good pokemon while older players who already own those top tier pokemon won't and giving the newer player an advantage, it is a cup to suck dust/candy from both players at the end of the day for sure. Personally Im not playing this week however I remember that one time where I invested on a good shadow ASand (I didnt have one as a new player and it happened to be that season where I caught one), I dominated for a week in catch cup as nobody expected it.

As a newer player, this cup felt for me. I am not sure it was designed for me, but it certainly felt that way. Two seasons ago, my first one in PoGo, it allowed me to gain about 300 Elo, from 2100 to 2400, by simply using the pokemon I had to build anyway (clodsire, Altaria, Lanturn, Quagsire). Last season, it allowed to reach Veteran for the first time (went from 2200 to 2700), again, with Pokemon I had to build anyway to remain competitive: Whiscash, Wigglytuff, Shadow A9. This season that I have a bigger roaster and didn't need to build as many mons, it is going slower. So I can already see the difference. Again, I don't dispute that likely their intention is to encourage all players to use resources... But in my experience, it definitely favours newer players. And you know what, even though I no longer benefit from it as much, I would rather them keep it. For me, it was huge to make those gains in a single week and it really motivated them for the next season.

I throw games for expert trainers that are above 2850s in the last several weeks of every season, i know how it feels to be gatekept being so close to hitting legend n not making it..with that said i usually tank down to 2600-2700 so i can play to win and still experiment with mons I rarely use.

I was the one that said we know the schedule. To clarify, I watch most videos to the end, but my point is that catch isn’t new. I ultimately agree with you that it’s dumb and rewards people that either grind a lot or willing to spend dust. My main point was choose your poison. The comments I got on that made me laugh though. I don’t understand why people play this game when clearly they don’t enjoy it anymore. It’s totes broken but I still love this game which is why I play, but the responses to my original comment just made me feel bad for the community. I tell my old faction that they don’t like it anymore and you can always take a break. The game will probably be here if you decide to come back. I legitimately think the Catch Cup is fun, and I think part of the fun is playing the Mons that you built this season. I've used 4 Mons over the first two days. Three were built this season for the first time. The fourth one was a 99% replacing the 94% that I was using just to have one. I've gone 35-15 with Shadow Empoleon, Mantine, Machamp, and Heliolisk.

I think your guesses about percentages of players who raid and collect vs. GBL battlers is roughly correct. I hink Niantic wants to push more players to battle ...at least to casually battle. Too many of the community days are for Pokemon or moves that have no use in raids for Niantic not to care about GBL. I only play GBL for the rewards. Mainly the stardust and the elite TMs. I lack the skill in GBL to hit legend, and hon't really care to study to gain the skills. I used to only play GBL enough to hit level 19, and then didn't even play to tank the battles. Last seaso I discoverrd that the dust rewards really added up. Last seasonI got nearly a million stardust in rewards. This season I should go well over well over 1.25 million. It wasn't until this season that I realized there was more than two elite TMs available as rewards in a season I only knew about getting one when I hit level 19, and one at the end of the season (if I hit level 19). When I found out there were elite TMs in some of the 5 win 100 times in GBL quest lines, I've now added the goal to win 500 battles per season.

I assume part of Niantic's reason is that trainers having *SOME* interest in GBL is that it pushes people to need more storage space for pokemon (and the cost of adding that storage). I try to keep one pokemon with high IVs, and at least one for great and one for ultra OF EVERY TYPE of pokemon. (If Meoth ever becomes meta in GBL, I'm ready) Another reason they may try to push those of us who dislike GBL into playing, is they think it is a more sustainable facet of the game. Collectors who only need high IVs of the best raiding pokemon and just one (or 3 for evolutions) will quickly fill their pokedex. Trainers who want the best PvP IVs have much more motivation to spend time in the game.

Hey Dan. I enjoy your analytical takes (rants if you will) and the history of videos, but I’m excited for the Monday/Tuesday educational ones the most. I said earlier I hit ace for the first time using tips and tricks from your older videos especially and have become a daily viewer ever since. I hit Veteran yesterday (thanks catch cup) and while I agree with your point about it rewards those who choose to invest dust, you also have to be actively hunting for those top meta Pokémon throughout the season, which I can’t imagine people like yourself who have built several of each are doing at the same rate as someone just starting out. And I’ll be continuing to do so next season to just get better IVs for the teams I’ve been having success with, but I don’t see myself building another lickitung, shadow aslash or purified sableye for example. Hopefully I can make expert on my first ever season of trying this week because I don’t see it happening at this elo in the final open leagues. Cheers and thanks for doing what you do!

I hate catch cup too, which is why I always take it off except for once to get a Pokemon with that league catch tag. I admit I also resent legends beating up on lower ranks, especially at the end. Raising in rank is really hard for some of us fighting people at our skill level, so artificially dropping yours to crush us is just despiriting, which will turn people off of pvp in the long term. It is what it is, though.

I get what you’re saying about the Catch Cup…I think it might make more sense to have, say open Great League run with Catch Cup Great League… that would give veteran players something to do, while fulfilling the theoretical vision of what Catch Cup should be. People in the comments are talking about how unfair it is for lower ranked players that legends tank their elo and then take their wins. My input is that this is a flaw with the game and that legend players shouldn’t be to blame. The reason they tank is because it is much easier to win and get more rewards at lower elo. There are shorter queue times and the battles aren’t as difficult for them. If legend players want to grind resources, then tanking is the smartest course of action. The blame should be on Niantic for giving legend players incentive to do this. After claiming the rewards for hitting legend, there is no incentive to stay at that elo unless you want to push leaderboards. All Niantic would have to do is give better rewards at higher elo, which would motivate legend players to stay at their rank and keep grinding at high elo. With less players tanking their elo, this would help shorten queue times as well. That’s my take on this topic at least.

ur argument is 100% right dan. all season i was hardstuck at 2400 and now during catch up im at 2800 elo range as a battler who doesnt count or optimize moves very well. i caught great IV's S. quagsire, S. whiscash, S. feraligator, S. poliwrath all in this seasona and was able to tm them all (as well as a S. dragonair but i havent powered it up yet). i also caught highly ranked mandibuzz, jellicient, annihalape, serperior and skeliderge and more. im beating battlers who are way better than me and are optimizing and playing correctly but their team is just outclassed by mine. in a lot of ways its not fair, but i like that it rewards ppl who grinded during the season. im still at the point in my gbl career where im still grinding to get good IV top ranked mons, id say i have like 40-50 of the top 100 ranked pokemon ready, so for players like me catch cup is usually a good cup to farm elo. i can see how for players who already have them all the double catch cup weeks are hell.

I’ve been throwing so much I’m down to 1900. Today I gave pretty much every game and got legit beat a couple. I hit legend 2 weeks ago. Beating aces and stuff now is pointless so I will be fooling around until end of season and throwing, don’t care about the dust now. Will get star piece rewards at end of season and make people happy and amused 🙏🏼❤️

I don’t think catch cup gives anyone an advantage. It just evens the playing field so everyone has the same chance to build up throughout the season. Everyone basically gets treated like a new player for that part of the season; except some people have a stardust advantage lol

With regards to the 7% playing for GBL, I'm someone who mainly plays casually, but would like to play GBL more. Quite often though, the massive issues with it that never get fixed just leave me frustrated and I just ignore it for a while. If they fixed it, I'm sure I would play more regularly, but the game is much more enjoyable when its not just down to hoping the game doesn’t lag or any other myriad glitches happen to screw you over. I doubt I'm the only one, but unless they put any effort into it, we'll never know. There are more fun things than spending an hour a day battling players and bad coding.

I think IVs are not that important for catch cup, sometimes I keep something close to 1500cp just to put in the absolute bare minimum investment possible, or power up an ultra league project to 1500 (trevenant this season, for example).

Niantic need to respect GBL more as it's basically the end game of all the grinding in the first place. We farm candy and dust etc. so we can have the best Pokemon for battling. If the game becomes unplayable, why would I continue to invest in the game?

Dan I liked your content because I am also adult with two kids, also full time employee. I was watching to learn something about PvP. But recently its so painful to listen to your rants and whining like you having to touch 14M stardust - and where is the content I can learn from? Other PvPers I watch comment their matches in educational way, like "Lickitung can beat powdersnow Sandslash if they land a Power Whip" or "Lanturn with top IV can beat Cress with poor IV in two shield scenario" or "count to five and then throw, because we win CMP". I value such information because it teaches me how to be a better player and then I share such video within my community so my friends can also learn. Recently I only hear from you how this game is bad and how it lags and how it is outrageous that you are not a legend. Do you think we have it any easier?

The summer Pokémon go came out me and my friends where neck and neck level wise, end of summer I went back to college, in NYC, till today the advantage I have over them is crazy, I’m level 50, most of them level 47-41

I feel like gbl has become a lot more difficult to progress in compared to previous seasons, and thats to be expected when everyone practices and learns the various aspects of gbl. Too bad for me, ive never managed to hit expert, and i got hard countered on the lead, safe swap and closer today for a full set, despite changing my team for the pokemon i was seeing the most for the day, which leads me to question what i think about the matchmaking algorithm

Focus on your team and executing your strategy. What is your safe swap supposed to draw out? What is your team ABA weak to? Are those team compositions common? If so, then maybe the team isn't consistent for climbing.

I did my best to keep good ivs and for the first time in 2 years I finally hit veteran which was my only goal. Don't think I'm skilled enough for expert but this cup definitely rewards grinders. I agree with you though. I could have had a shadow skarm if I'd just thought to keep one and not transfer everything, next season that's going to be my plan.

If you can get to veteran you can get to expert. Are you good with optimal charge move timing? If you can charge move time you can get to Legend.

Yea I know legend isn’t happening for me this season. I’m hoping to hit veteran, and then if so I’m just running fun teams I normally wouldn’t run. Triple brave bird why not?

I dropped over 100 elo today, losing 4 sets. Everyone has a counter for flying, water, and fighting. Those are the only pokemon I have to use. I've been hard countered on lead and switch in every match

I went on a 15 win streak today using A-Slash, Mandibuzz and Mantine, +350 elo since yesterday. I cba about niantic and I refuse to grind the game, I solely pvp. Catch cup has always been an elo boost week for me.

In Game1, the sh. skarm died with the move at 15 steel wings; they didn't choose to not throw, SA is 8 then 7. The other things are... well don't play catch cup if you all hate it so much, Im' skipping it If even 1/2 of the 13%gbl playerbase doesn't play... thats' a lot of people given how many play the game. Niantic doesn't care about your complaints when you all' still obediently keep on buying whatever they sell

Nothing wrong with rewarding people who are willing to commit resources. Popular games aren't purely about skill expression. The dark reality is that game developers intentionally make the game easier for money spenders. Catch Cup and Master League exist for those reasons.

Man the lag in GBL almost makes it unplayable. It really is a big let down that the buttons won't appear and all the other stuff that's going on because of the lag.

You can "outspend" with dust in this cup to hit legend. Literally can "Pay to win" to climb. Its only your fault if you're in this position. Harsh but true. You had 2+ months and now you're here. Hoard every good iv each season just in case 😅

People are so focused on IVs but in reality they dont matter AS much as people make it out to be. I hit legend this cup using a gligar, toxapex, and lanturn. All trash IVs and hell the tox is one point away from a hundo😂. Didnt invest a SINGLE xl. Probs spent only around 150,000 dust. Dont overthink it guys.

Hi Dan, and all the other gbl fans here, what is your favorite pokemon to play in GBL, as in not the one that gets you the most wins, but the one which you genuinely enjoy running in teams. For me, its probably victrebell with magical leaf, leaf blade and acid spray. Its just fun to use imo, with quick charged moves, and its funny seeing all the waters getting walled. Call it toxic, but it is fun...

I’ll throw games in the high 29’s and 28’s. But once I’m down to 2600-2700 I’ll play spice and try to get 2-3 wins a set and throw if I climb back up I’ll throw for a set. If throwing was all I could do to feel better then I would basically stop playing. It’s not like we owe charity work either

Think GBL would be a easy fix for niantic. Get better servers. I wouldn't doubt they are running on some cheap machines that cant handle the amount of info its trying to possess at half a sec intervals while 1000s + of players are trying to use at once. But Im not a computer geek and someone probably will correct me on this. Im down for knowledge.

Cause everyone *knows* older players "can" do it, the point is that they "don't" do it, *exactly* like the situation you're in now. You can disagree with it, you can hate it, but it is reality. Newer players grind more, cause they're new. Older players *can* grind in your manner, but they don't. Ergo, advantage newer players. When I used to hit legends I would only throw games if the opponent wasn't using any of the OP pokemon I refuse to use.. so if they had stuff like charmers, medi, registeel, cress, lickitung or pidgeot I would try to win.. if they didn't, I would top left once they revealed their 3rd pokemon
