I've always loved Danse Macabre, and this listening guide by camillamc1 is extraordinarily well done. Thanks so much! I'll be sharing this guide with everyone I know who has school-age kids as well as with adult friends who are just getting into classical music. Camillamc1, please consider doing more visual guides.

My mental image was slightly different when I first heard this piece. Instead of ghosts i envisioned only skeletons, the so called ghost theme was the signal for starting the waltz. A little old fashoned but grande ball with skeleton gentlemen and their ladies. It's crazy that Saint Saens was able to put a mental image so explicitly into people's mind by the only means of music. This piece was born before movie was invented.
@jsprite123 Жыл бұрын
It's even crazier that the same Saint Saens also wrote one of the most beautiful of all classical pieces: The Swan

Suggestion: I refer to the Death theme as the Skeleton-Fiddler's Theme. I used this as music appreciation for grades 6 - 8 students and found the "Death" term too morbid for the grade. At the end, one last skeleton rushes back to his coffin and grave, and TWO coffin lids close. You see, The Fiddler, waited to make sure all of the other skeletons made it safely back to their coffins until another Hallowe'en.

Unfortunately what the map says is not completely the truth what’s actually happening is not some little ball it’s about the devil/death stealing the souls of those who come to dance with him
@horaciocapanelli-soto47103 жыл бұрын
Not correct. The composition is based on a poem about “Death”. “Zig zig zig zig death in cadence walks and with it’s heel trips over a tomb…. She plays her vioin for the dead to dance for her”…. Nothing to do with the devil here Stop associating devil with the natural transition of passing away. Death is as natural as fart 🤷🏻♀️

@Hhuhater3 жыл бұрын
@@horaciocapanelli-soto4710 all jokes aside I don't usually reply to comments that attempt to correct my input, but given that this is one of my favorite songs i'll elaborate on what I said. I'll start with the poem you referenced. the poem was written by Henri Cazalis, and the poem is formally known as "the dance of death". Throughout the first stanza we can note that "death" is referred to like it was a person, ("Death in cadence, striking with his heel a tomb" and "Death at midnight plays a dance tune") this leads us to believe that "death" is a character in the poem. throughout history humans have associated death with figures like the grim reaper and the devil. The devil is believed to collect the souls of those who make a deal with him. Moving onto the piece, Danse Macabre was written in 1874 by Camille Saint-saëns as the third of the four symphonic poems that he wrote in his mid 30's and 40's. David Bowden, director and conductor of the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, has given an explanation of the song and the parts the instruments play in the composition. Bowden writes "In Saint-Saëns’ evocative setting, the solo violin represents the devil who is playing his fiddle for the dance.". This statement is backed by "hints" in the piece, and example of this is when the solo violin is being tuned in the beginning. During this part of the piece the violin is tuned a half step down to a tritone, this is commonly known as the "devil's interval". Heading back to the personification of death, Saint-Saëns also gives us another hint that death is the devil. If you listen closely you can hear the “dies irae” chant. which is an excerpt from the "Day of Wrath", a requiem about death, that has been used in many compositions to personify death. Onto what I said about the devil stealing the souls of those who dance with him, towards the end it's as if a frenzy breaks out, I personally have interpreted this as the devil dragging the souls that dance with him down to hell. You may say that it's unfair to include my interpretation of the piece as an example as to why Death in this piece is the devil, but I would say that without new interpretations this piece would be impossible to understand and the map we watched wouldn't exist. Hopefully my explanation made my thoughts clearer, and didn't take away from this beautiful piece. if not, I would love to hear what else you have to say.
@martagrothman63273 күн бұрын
@@Hhuhater When I watched this map, I thought it did such a good job showing the instrumentation in a fun way- but, in the end, if I am teaching about "tone poems", the graphics do not come close to the poem... The old version (the filmstrip version turned into a video) is closer to the spirit of the poem- and is still children friendly.
