Coal loads? Use the existing and coat with white glue and real coal dust. Coal dust is easy to make with a small hammer, an old rag, and a strainer. Mash the coal inside the folded rag and sort using a strainer. Sprinkle on the white glue you coated the existing load with and allow to dry. No painting necessary.

Make your own coal loads. It's easy. Get some urethane foam. Cut it into pieces to fit loosely inside the cars Only needs to be about 10 mm thick. Sand upper surface to represent top surface of coal load. Spray matt black, coat with PVA glue and sprinkle with fine coal dust. Glue small piece of steel to the underside . Using a magnet you can easily remove the loads of you want to run empties. These loads cost next to nothing and you can make a heap of them in an afternoon.

Dan, Pelle Søeborg did a article in his done in a day book and where he used the the factory loads and mixed the coal he used with elmer’s glue and then put new coal on top of the factory load

To add weight to the Exactrail bulkhead flat, drill holes in the underside of the center beam and fill with birdshot and white glue. Once dry, the weight will not shift and the holes can be patched and painted with spot putty. Bird shot can be purchased in 25 pound bags cheap at local gun shops. I use this under my open hoppers (you will never see it unless you stage a derailment) and it lowers the center of gravity. Only purists will be horrified but in the cavities under the car between slope sheets you cannot see it from normal viewing angles.

my first job after high school working at a small lumber yard unloading bulkheads or box cars at another spur starting at 5 a.m. some days 9 nights we be done with all the trucks in the yard to one side of the lard was to be unloaded and the other side was to be loaded

Not sure, but if I'd be building a four track main line layout, I'd maybe consider starting with 1/2 loops, testing those for some time and when sure that tracks laid with robust technique, laying the other 2-3 loops. To save time, if something goes south. 🤔

Do like I do cut a paper towel role in half take Kingsford charcoal bust it up with a hammer or sledgehammer glue it on the top of the paper Towel role you cut in half put it in the coal car and done
