Same. But Tbf. I was a kid in the 90’s and there’s no such thing as good or a bad movie. It wasn’t until I’m older watching some of them again that I could agree that they were indeed bad. Case in point: Space Jam 😂
@candrian74 жыл бұрын
My high school geography teacher had us watch this in class, believe it or not but at the time (about 2000) this was actually the most accurate portrayal of a volcano eruption in film, even the bit where they drove a truck over the patch of lava.

Your point of the effects is spot on, Whenever i talk to people about how CGI has gone to far and how movies should be, i use this as the perfect example of the golden age of effects where CGI was good enough to get the huge effects needed, but directors didn't completely rely on it for everything. i love that the dam,the bridge,the interstate destruction, the volcano eruption, minus the last one ,everything is real and practical effects.
@GoodBadFlicks10 жыл бұрын
Kenneth Schlegel Thanks! Unfortunately CGI has gone from being a tool to a crutch. So many movies rely way too heavily on it and most look so unbelievably phoney.
@princeofcupspoc90736 жыл бұрын
Yep. Instead of using CGI only where it was planned, if they have any shooting problems, instead of fixing them on the set, they send the messed up footage to the CGI guys to (try to) fix, with varying results.
@brandonpage70876 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the CGI was used correctly in this film, to help enhance the practical effects.

Curiously VOLCANO had a release around the same time and, to my amazement, it received more critical love than DANTE'S PEAK, which is the superior film. DANTE'S PEAK manages to create such an immense sense of scale and the devastation is so utter that it really is (pardon the pun) an unmitigated disaster.

I lived in Wallace, Idaho for around 12 years (it’s a tiny town, less than 1,000 people lived there at the time). This movie was filmed before I was born, but the town continued to make a big deal about it having been shot there. A restaurant called the red light garage, where I spent quite a bit of my childhood, used to have a ton of Dantes Peak memorabilia it in. My elementary school music teacher would also constantly talk about being a very small extra in the movie with a great deal of pride.

Seems like if you wanted to make grandma make a compelling sacrifice, have the boat still be somewhat far out from the dock but taking on water. Grandma figures that if she jumps out, the removal of her weight would make the boat buoyant enough to make it to the dock and save her grandkids. So she tells her grandkids she loves them, jumps out, gets burned, and drowns.

The key to a movie like this is having characters you want to spend time with doing stuff plausible enough to believe. Twister and Dante's Peak had good characters doing reasonably smart things to survive. Volcano was dopey from beginning to end and the characters were mostly annoying.

You know, speaking of "living near a volcano", Quito, Ecuador is actually built on the flanks of Mt. Pichincha. There was a spectacular eruption in 1999, there was a mushroom cloud and a bit of ash fallout afterward. It's just a fact of life in some parts of the world...

I also want to point out that they put seismographs up on the volcano at 2 different points. This is clearly how they got their readings at home base. But when Harry goes back to get the EMF thingy from the robot, he takes a look at the computer (noticing the pyroclastic explosion being imminent) and sees readings still coming in from the devices in the volcano. After the lava came in... Their devices can withstand lava

this movie gets a bad rep, undeserved too. it came out at a time where disaster movies oversaturated the market and people and critics themselves got tired of it. however, looking back at all the other disaster movies like twister or Vulcano, I can't understand the hate. its by far the best disaster movie. it focuses on a smaller scope and has human emotional elements, instead of ultra epic nonsense. the pacing and acting is excellent, as expected. the biggest gripe I read about it is people moaning about how cliche and predictable the overall plot is. I find that to be unfair, due to overexposure and market saturation mentioned above in the 90s, and not a very valid critique anyhow. tropes are not bad, and they combine here in an competently put together, very enjoyable adventure.

You can thank Ben Burtt for the revival of the Wilhelm Scream. When he was doing sound for Star Wars he found the sound clip, which had fallen out of use, and put it in a stormtrooper death scene in the movie. After that he started to use it in other films he worked on (Indiana Jones, Willow) and then it became a sort of inside-joke in Hollywood and was picked up and used by other sound artists.

I like Dante's Peak, and feel it is in a trifecta of fun 90s disaster movies with Twister and Volcano. Out of Date's Peak and Volcano though, this one is the more realistic and a story that could easily really happen. Maybe that's why I like Volcano - the ridiculous idea of a volcano forming under a major city is fun.
@MidlifeCrisisJoe8 жыл бұрын
Oh Volcano has a ton of ridiculous things running throughout it - Anne Heche dating Tommy Lee Jones, the idea that the LA Metro would continue to make subway routes after the disaster it had with the first, that anyone would believe that it would matter if LA were to be destroyed . . . lots of stuff.

I think the movie also has a lot of references to the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 and the events surrounding/leading up to it. Most notably, I think old drama queen grandma is a representation of Harry Truman (the proprietor of Mount St. Helens Lodge at Spirit Lake, not the 33rd President) who gained minor celebrity status for refusing to evacuate, claiming he 'didn't believe it [would blow] enough to pack up and leave'. Some good stuff on KZbin with him if you're interested.

Overall agreed, though I would say on one part it is plausible: the final eruption. Now I'm not saying you could outrun it, but from the get-go Harry wasn't trying to outrun it, he was trying to get to the mine before the eruption got to them. I watched a clip of the eruption and timed it; if you count out the scenes of them and destruction, the actual eruption itself from start to when they get to the mine is right around a minute, which in an earlier scene is approximately how long it would take for the blast to hit the town. While I can't say for certain how well the truck would do with 4 flat tires in around 5 to 6 inches of ash or so, if it's a flat run with no turns and depending on where they were in the town when the eruption started and how fast they were going to get deep enough in the mine to keep clear of the deadly ash and gases, I'd say it's at least possible to survive. It's at least more believable than crossing an acidic lake in an aluminum boat or crossing a river of lava (which need I add would have likely blown the gas tank long before they made it half-way across; must have had a heat resistant tank in that one). All in all, this movie is far more accurate than Volcano; melting people in lava, need I say more?

I've always liked DANTE'S PEAK, partly because they took the time to develop the relationships, especially the one between Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton. By the time they're about to sleep together you can believe these two have fallen for each other, and by the end of the movie you can believe that the leads have pretty much decided that Yeah, they're a couple with kids. Brosnan does a great job of selling it because no matter how inhumanly handsome he is, he's always been a Dad at heart.
