Thanks for posting! I had no idea the truck picks up the front wheel and pushes the aircraft away from the gate. I thought that all aircraft were pushed back by a post that's attached to the aircraft's front wheel stem and all wheels are rotating backwards when being pushed. Cheers and greetings from SFO!

You pushed it out at such a sharp angle and put it right on the line. Well done. I usually try to go for a more smooth curve with such large planes so i don't get an over torque. This was awesome to watch. If I may ask, how heavy was the load on the lifter?

It's a good push but as we all know , those of us who have experience of manoeuvring aircraft using a TBL ( lifting ) type tug is very much easier than using a tug and tow bar which articulates at two points. It's much more technical and a skilled method of manoeuvring planes. At Heathrow we would also do this reversing planes onto the taxiway if we have to reposition to hangers or other areas of LHR.
@ikarlhd1

You think so? I believe the good old Tug and bar method is quite simple, turn left to go left and right to go right

Not really cause once you get the plane rolling it's not hard to move. Also the landing gear is extremely strong. I saw what causes the landing gear to raise and lower on a 767 and shit is huge. Doesn't look like much till you get up close to the landing gear.

An excellent video, and first time recording this operation for you. I might want to suggest a different nomenclature for the description of the vehicle. In a manufacturing plant setting a service vehicle would be referred to as a mule, or a tractor. In the automotive roadside service industry, the vehicle would be referred to as Wrecker, or a Tow Truck. In the Maritime service assistant, the vehicle vessel would be referred to as a tug. In the airport service push back, or being used in a towing situation, the vehicle is known as a tug.

Great stuff! What is the purpose of the cable that the driver connected and disconnected from the plane? I only recently realised that the front wheel was lifted up during push-back. I guess this means the push-back vehicle does not have to be as heavy in order to get sufficient traction to push the plane.

Did the driver left something behind? Actually I saw something like a pen and check list attached to the front gear and some ribbons!? What would happen if they forgot completely?
@ikarlhd1
@ikarlhd1 7 жыл бұрын
The ribbon is a steering bypass pin, it disconnects the hydraulics in the nose wheel to allow the tug to turn the gear and not damage it. The aircraft can't taxi without visually seeing the bypass pin when presented to them by the ground crew after the tug is clear.

Gert Nel, steering bypass pin isn't for gear retraction. That's the job of the Landing gear strut pin which is stored inside the cockpit. What you saw was a bypass pin for towing purposes only. It disconnects nose wheel steering.

@@drummerkid69 at 7:55 you can see him pulling the pin. as the hydraulic pressure builds up again (if pin is inserted, it cuts the hydraulic power to the nose gear), it turnes the gear a few degrees into center position. :)
