Күн бұрын

We are in to Autumn now and there is an abundance of wild foods and medicines still to be found. We are very blessed. We may think that our plant relatives are dying away but there is still so much to harvest. Here I am talking about just a few things that I have found in an afternoon.
Blackberries being full of Vit C, Vit A, Vit E and Vit B6, along with other powerful anti-oxidants, make a great food at this time of year and can ward off the common cold. I make jam and chutneys with them and freeze some for a treat in a pie or crumble in mid-Winter.
Nettles are one of the most wanted medicinal plants being food as well. Suddenly they are flourishing again as they do in Spring so I have gathered a bunch to make a nourishing soup. Beneficial for men, women and children they bring welcome nutrition just as we need to build ourselves up for winter.
Hawthorn berries make a wonderful tonic medicine for the cardio-vascular system, for all manner of cardiac issues. They also benefit sleep and relaxation so are very much welcome during such stressful times and when we really need to give care to our hearts - on a metaphysical level as well.

Well it's spring in Australia, though we don't tend to get wild berries in my area at any time of year. Currently I'm picking a lot of plantain and common mallow, which I dry and keep to use for tea - my sister gets a lot of chest infections and the tea is a good expectorant. There's also dandelion and cat's ear. I don't know very much about all this stuff, but I'm learning and getting better at it over time.

Hi Terri thanks for the awesome video we have an abundance of hawthorn berries this year too as well as loads of hazelnuts! Can I ask if tincture is the best way to use this medicine or can we powder the dried berries as well? I have someone asking me for capsule medicine which I am not familiar with making at all! Love to you and yours
@DanusIrishHerbGarden

Hi Sascha - you can dry the berries for tea or you could make tincture in alcohol or vinegar. Not necessarily better but would be more powerful. You could powder the berries if you wish. I don't personally like capsules but that is how you would encapsulate the berries, by making a powder. xx love to you too. x

I do not see any any comment over here yet, scarcity is real in the grocery store not everybody have the opportunity to forage out in the countryside, or physically do it, I am trying to save everywhere but there is a limit to what you could do for yourself specially if you are limited physically sorry to say that but probably I’m not the only one. Otherwise I do enjoy your videos but I cannot agree with you completely regards from Canada
@DanusIrishHerbGarden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden Жыл бұрын
I understand Judit. For us here in Ireland it is less scarcity than talk of it although food prices have gone up. You don't need to go to the countryside as there are lots of wild plants in the cities too. I am suggesting that people go outside with different eyes and really look to seek. Thanks for your comment and I hope all is well with you xx

Love the new music (new to my ears)! Give a pet and scratch behind the ears to those cute and playful dogs. Here in Western Wisconsin on the Upper Mississippi we saw the first teasing snowflakes. The gorgeous sugar maples are bright flaming orange and red. Pumpkins and apples are my harvest of choice now. There are mushrooms too of course but I'm not versed in that. Other things I've noticed on nature walks are hazlenuts, walnuts, chestnuts and rose hips of course. It's time to harvest herbs and hang them up to dry! Hugs to all!

Oh, to have a natural hedgerow with blackberries like that is wonderful! You mentioned mushrooms right at the end of the video. This time of year in south central Indiana/US would typically be Maitake mushroom season in older growth forests, but we have had an atypically long term drought. Maitake typically grows at the base of old, dying, or dead oak trees. It is considered prime gourmet for eating, but it also is very good for the body being an adaptogen. I’d be out foraging for that, but sadly, not this year.

We were en route here for a bumper crop of blackberries ,then along came weeks of endless heat in the upper 30's,before they ripened and they all desiccated😥but we have good crops of Chestnuts(Marron),elderberries ,hawthorn and rose hips and field mushrooms.The squirrels have taken most of the walnuts (garden)and the hazelnuts from the hedgerows. I think a lot of the shortages are because people have become used to eating foods out of season and imports are down of these foods ,there is plenty of seasonal food available ?

Another great video. Aren't we lucky, living on a planet where there is so much abundance (well, maybe not for all of us). I live a similar lifestyle to yours. Gathering and growing food and medicine. Right now there is so much abundance in the garden. This growing season started out difficult (weather wise - a very cool and wet May and June) but by now what is growing in the garden is doing very well. I feel blessed to have this small cabin, big garden and everything I get to share with folk in this mountain village. Thanks for all the things you share with us. Cheers to you Terri!

In a nearby park to me, last year I foraged lots of blackberries, nettle and hawthorn berries, but guess what the council have dug everything up, so no more foraging there. I'll have to drive somewhere to forage now. So angry 😡 !!!

Our council in its wisdom (who are one of the 100plus councils) who have pledged to get the area to net zero earlier than 2030, so my instincts tell me this is part of it. These people will not realise the foolhardiness of their actions until its too late. Then I expect they'll blame someone else

I am not familiar with Bittersweet. Honeysuckle berries are not used these days as they can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and some people regard them as poisonous. xx

Have a love/hate relationship with my blackberries. They are huge plants here and very invasive. The canes can be a thick as a finger. I do enjoy the berries and have lots in the freezer. Now need to get them out of my wild rose and horseradish. Willamette Valley Oregon USA.
@DanusIrishHerbGarden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden Жыл бұрын
Same here Melissa but I recommend stop thinking of plants as invasive or as this or that. They are just doing what they are meant to. You can cut them right back to the ground, compost or make baskets with them and then enjoy the berries when they come again. xx
