I came to the comments when I heard him say it. 😂 Park is indeed named after Lafontaine, a key figure in the Patriot Rebellions of 1837 against the British colonial authorities. Lafontaine later served as our first Premier and is famous for pissing off the Anglo loyalists who rioted and 🔥burned down the Canadian Parliament in Montréal🔥 in full francophobic rage which lead to it being moved to Ottawa. He has his own monument/statue in the park at the corner of Sherbrooke and Ave. Du Parc Lafontaine just South of the pond. Hard to miss it.

Ya, I found it weird too when he said it was the city of French Canadians or something like that. No, it's the Quebecois metropolis. We're the original Canadiens and had to rename ourselves when our identity was taken from the anglo canadians (who were the British back then), don't say we're a French version of our former selves that's weird.
@vmoses19795 ай бұрын
Quebec is derived from the native people of Canada - the true owners of the land. So emphasizing that term as belonging to settlers from France is kinda funny. The only reason you prefer Quebecois as opposed to French Canadian is that you have ambivalent(resentful?) feelings about being a part of Canada.
@obesia18735 ай бұрын
@@vmoses1979 Québécois are the rightful owners of the land and this includes native people and their ancestral rights. But they do not own the land individually. Also, the Québécois are the original canadiens, but the term was simply taken by the British loyalists so of course we had to find a new name for ourselves. Québécois is who we identify as as a result. Not a big deal. What group of people doesn't name itself on this planet? Why are you so bothered with that? Naming ourselves the French version of our former selves wouldn't make much sense.
@vmoses19795 ай бұрын
@@obesia1873 Again you keep appropriating native people's lands by lumping French colonists with them in the term Quebecois as 'rightful owners'. I don't know why you need to distort plain history and accept your presence is because of force and appropriation. My point was simple - the term Quebecois began to be heavily used and promoted fairly recently because of Rene Levesque and the Parti Quebecois who called for independence referendums. Before that French Canadian was the norm and widely used in books and print media. The plain fact is that many things Quebeckers do is simply to oppose English Canada. And that is alright given the bad history of the English before the Quiet Revolution. But stop the dissembling please.
@GaisSacredCreations5 ай бұрын
@@vmoses1979 The first use of the word Québecois was in 1862...60 years before the birth of René Lévesque. My Grandpapa, rest his soul, was a collector of beautiful Québecois literature from the 19th century and rare history books written in the early days of New France and before the British claimed Nouvelle France following the war of Québec in 1759. The French of Québec had a good relationship with the Native American nations for the most part since trade was an essential building block of New France. In 1763, the Treaty of Paris ended the seven-year war and ceded New France to Britain. Then, that is when the real trouble started. Horrific accounts in the early days following the war when British troops were given the order to exterminate the habitants that farmed the areas on both sides of the St Lawrence River...there were atrocities committed upon the Native American tribes loyal to the French and the French colonists. There is a ton of information that is not taught in Canadian schools about the conquest of New France by Britain which is shocking. I have original documents, personal logs and diaries written by my family members who were in Québec since 1628 and were part of the French military and fought at the Battle of Québec. Some of these documents are now in the Musée de la Civilisation du Québec in Old Québec City. Historical documentation of the Britsh forcing the Indigenous Nations to sign treaties with England denouncing their loyalty to all French living in what was then New France. If they refused, they were threatened with the extermination of their villages and the execution of men, women and children...and that is the tip of the iceberg of what the British did to the Native Americans and the French.

I can explain why summer in Montreal is special. First winter is long, so everyone comes out. Two, the city size is small so all the major attractions are in walking distance. NYC, LA are not like that. (Santa Monica beach to grifth-something else. It could be very far in traffic) (NYC is very diverse but it kinda doesn’t have the “one-ness” feeling. There is one-ness feeling but just not as strong as Montreal people) the culturally laidback-vibe is unique to Quebec, I think. 3. I think NYC party scene and MTL party scene are both good but MTL party scene is more welcoming. (Imagine going to 1 house to another in NYC. It’s just difficult to find parking spot twice. And it becomes a hassle). And, i think it’s a lot safer to walk around (relatively to other major cities in North America). You gotta play the “city lines” video game Dan. I think you might love it! (About lens: don’t get a new lens. What you have is perfect. I don’t know for streets but for ski-vlogging, insta 360 is the way to go. (In terms of battery performance in cold weather and giving many different option of views). (Go pro is no more the leader. )
