This is really useful. I just found a really old example of this kit in a drawer- a couple of parts were damaged (I was about 12, don't judge me *too* hard) so it never go built. Now I'm looking at this 22 years later and thinking of what I can do with it - and this video is good inspiration. So, I'm looking at using the bogies for a Bolster wagon and fabricating my own chassis as you are. Very helpful!

Hello David, thanks for posting these videos on the Airfix/Dapol crane. The link to the drawings you mention early in the video is partially covered on screen by pictorial links to the next two parts in the series, thus I can only see part of the link. Would it be possible to post the link in the comment section please, as I'm keen to carry out the upgrades you show here. Thank you.

Bloody good cant wait for the next video, I would not have the patience or the skills to undertake the changes to the orig kit, U are a very talented modeller my limits with kits are from the sixties with a few airfix railway buildings & of course aircraft kits. The only glue was in tubes and went everywhere and no airbrushes lol

Hi Dave, sorry for the delay, I have had some work commitments that have kept we away from my railway for a while. Yes have thought of a mess wagon, should be a relatively simple conversion from a GW brake van (famous last words!!). I have not got it in the pipeline, although it is a consideration for the future. Regards, David

Hi David, from looking at the jib in the photos available on the net there appears that they were all different lengths so I can only assume that they were built for particular reasons at particular places hence the jib runner would be specific to each crane built I assume. Hopefully this will give the reason for the awkwardness of finding the right runner for this jib but at least we have something nearer to the original to run with our other near to realism stock! Nice description never the less. Look forward to reading more in the future. Happy 2017!! Bill

Hi Bill. I believe there were different lengths of jib. I came across the same when I researched the build. I don't have a great depth of knowledge in railway cranes, and I decided it would be a difficult job to alter any inaccuracies in the jib department. I was lucky in finding a wagon for the runner that looked about right, to my eye anyway. I exercised my model maker's licence (if there is such a thing), as you say, I wanted to move it nearer to the original. Thanks for your kind comments and a happy New Year to you. ... David

Brilliant David - Thanks so much for taking the trouble to make such great videos - well shot and very clearly lit and edited. Thanks too for sharing your very considerable modelling experience and tips which are great for someone like myself as a beginner. May you produce many more as they are almost like a set of tutorials. I noticed on one of your updates you mention using some electronics. Have you made any 'how to' videos on the route switching idea you referred to with your control panels?

+Light Ray : Many thanks, appreciate your kind comments. I have limited electronic skills, but I was able to get my head round the diode, and diode matrix circuits. I have made 3 in total, 2 are point (route) switching, and one light (signal) switching, I googled 'diode matrix' and came across easy to follow descriptions of how to design them. Happy to help if you thinks a video might be useful. Regards, David

Excellent video. How did you manage to insert the wheels with the rigid sides already fixed in place?
@davidhyde4329
@davidhyde4329 4 жыл бұрын
Hi TK, many thanks. The sides are plastic and have some flexibility, just like the side frames on Hornby and Bachmann. You can remove the wheels and axels with the side frames n place 👍👍👍

Hi David, your videos on what hardware you use was very informative, but watching this I've realised we haven't seen your software suite. Are you using something simple like movie-maker, or Adobe Premier?
@davidhyde4329
@davidhyde4329 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comments. O.K. - software - for stills I use Photoshop Elements 7 (nothing special) and Combine ZP (free download) for focus stacking when needed. For my videos I now use MoviePlus X6 - again nothing special - I bought it on Ebay for £35. I did my very first videos on Movie-Maker but MoviePlus X6 has more to offer. Hope this helps - David

Hi David. Are you a co-author of a publication called ''A History of GWR Goods Wagons''? If you are, I would like to commend you on an excellent work containing much useful information and beautiful drawings which are so useful for scratch builders like myself. I have vols 1and 2 and would like to know if you published any more vols of this useful collation of information. I have followed this crane conversion / scratch build before and commented but I have only just made the connection to you. Slow eh?

Another really super video, thank you. Excellent skills and a real talent for explaining things correctly. I am really enjoying and looking forward to your videos. A small question if I may, was your drill running backwards? Kindest regards Tim
@davidhyde4329
@davidhyde4329 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, many thanks for your comments, much appreciated. I have been a keen photographer for many years, my model railway has given me a chance to try videos and I am really enjoying it. I don't believe it, you are absolutely right, my drill is running backwards. I pulse the drill when working with plastic to avoid overheating and damage, so it slows down the process, I was thinking about the shot, so it did not occur to me the drill was set on reverse. I drilled the pilot hole and the drill was only big enough to get the reaming tool started, it did open the hole, so I was blissfully aware of the error. Just goes to show - you can't get away with anything !! Thanks again Tim, best regards, David

Hi David thanks for the link to the drawings which I have downloaded. In one of your videos you comment that the runner wagon you have doesn't match the drawings. Well I can see that the annotated 35' dimension is wrong. If you add up the sub dimensions you can see that it should be 38' 5". Also apparent from the 19' 10" dimension which is almost (but not quite) half the wagon. So your model might not be wrong after All!

Brilliant, thanks Ian. Its been a while but I seem to remember that the Jib in the kit is not the 'correct' scale length. Anyway I was not prepared to remodel the Jib, and I thought both the jib and the runner wagon looked right, which, unless you are a perfectionist, is fine for me. Glad you have got the plans sorted. Good luck with your conversion. Mess van conversion is going well, I will have a video out shortly - David
