Hi Sam, just watched your 0 gauge 08 Shunter review, interesting, pity the quality let it down in some small areas. Having driven the real thing I would add that these don't tear around. Yes they are powerful but they are low geared, so the speed of your one was about right once you had run it in. One item you appeared to miss, yes the directional headlights worked but only the top ones. The bottom middle headlight should be on as well and so should the tail lights work also which are the outer lamps. I once drove one of these all the way from Bury St Edmunds yard to Cambridge yard. Took ages but I enjoyed driving it. They are quite noisy machines. I wouldn't worry to much about the lack of a Brake Van as these are just shunting engines that work within yards. Their only involvement with Brake Vans would have been when they were making a train up. Thanks again for a good informative video. Take care and stay safe. 👍

Hi Sam, I have an "08" in "BR Blue" with "Wasp Stripes," which I bought some time ago from "Tower Models." It is all metal, made in china, out of brass except for the chassis which is stainless steel, with bronze bearings. It is fully detailed, with air tanks under the cab. I have fitted it with DCC Sound, a fully detail painted cab and driver, I think that ALL model locos should supplied with a painted driver, with fireman on steam locos, It should not add much to the cost. My late father worked for an oil company that had a yard and jetty at our local docks. The yard had a siding into it, where tank wagons were sometimes offloaded. The company also had storage tanks on site, and some of these, and some old pipework were dismantled, in about 1989. The pieces of scrap were too large to remove by road, so a train was ordered to shift it. The railway ran in a shallow cutting between the quayside and the road, and crossed the road to enter dad's yard. Before the road was a bit of hardstanding, and as trains were a rarity, some people would park their cars on it, behind a building that had belonged to the River Police. People were told not to park on the hardstanding, as a train would be using it. On the 'train day', my dad was in his office, working, and was startled to see three cars enter the yard together, and sideways. They had been parked on the hardstanding, and pushed out of the way by a long train of bogie bolsters, and well wagons; the '08' pushing them was a good hundred yards or so down the track, and the cars, behind the hut, were invisible to the man walking up the road to stop traffic. By the time he'd contacted the driver, the first bogie bolster had pushed the cars into the yard. Three complete write offs. My father thought it hilarious, which it was. Long before mobile phones, though. Pity.

@@SamsTrains - Nobody was hurt, other than their car insurance. They had been told for several weeks prior not to park on the hardstanding the rails ran through, just in case. I saw the cars myself, and they were just so much scrap. There was an enquiry into it, and the blame lay entirely with the car owners due to them totally disregarding the warnings.

Scary photos aside, I can now say something about the 00 gauge Great Western 2-6-0 Mogul engine. My Dapol model is in Great Western Green with BR number-plates, her number is 7301. Call me crazy, but from Chester Model Shop, I bought her and four other steamies to make five. 7301 was tested alongside the two Manor Engines, the Tiny Terrier Tank Engine and the Electrotren Tank Engine named Molly. They all ran like a dream, but they're not running on my railway till Thomas and his friends arrive. The 2-6-0 Mogul Engine is the best model Dapol has ever created.

I paid for the engines with my credit card. I'm over the moon with 7301, but I can't love her more than my Bachmann Manor models that are just as good performance-wise. Foxcote Manor is top of the heap with City of Truro. Don't forget that. I'm keeping my six beautiful Manor engines, although the line-up might change again. I can't go on forever changing my line-up of model steamies, but I'll have the final line-up that won't change. I promise you that. My excuse for crazily buying 5 model steamies? I have 7D-008-001, 13282 in plain green early crest. Doesn't have any of the quality issues yours has, and crawls excellently. The motor is just as loud, but it is geared to run slowly as is prototypical. My 14xx can manage a train of 12 wagons on the slight incline of the section of garden railway I have up at the moment, albeit slipping a bit towards the bottom until it gets going, but I've since increased the rake by 2 wagons (a 4th dapol 14t Berry Wiggins tanker and a 2nd parkside mogo van), and I'm awaiting another parkside kit this week and will hopefully get more for christmas too. The 08 certainly is more powerful than the 14xx by a long shot, but I haven't run the garden railway since I got the autocoach in mid september. Brake vans, I have a dapol ex-sr pill box van in br grey, which is good but one of the buffer housings was loose from the model when it arrived. I need a br standard 20t van at some point, plus a parkside and/or peco wonderful wagon kit of a gwr toad too (my 0 gauge is an ex-GWR branch line, so might sell the pill box van). I can highly recommend those dapol 14t tankers, but I'm sad that they're not doing any of the new anchor mounted tanks in Berry Wiggins livery.

A very good looking model there Sam. Damn Quality control should have pick up on the blatantly obvious excess glue etc. Come on Dapol you have proved that you can build good quality models! It is an impressive performer nonetheless and some of the faults can be easily repaired, but you should not have to do any on a brand new model. What part of the UK are you from Sam? I'm picking up a either Notts or Leics twang perhaps? One good trait you have is that you comment on a very good majority of comments that you receive!

Thanks a lot mate - you're right, bit disappointed in those, not helped by the packaging of course! I'm from the midlands, yeah! ;D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

great video as always. just a thought though. with people commenting about you needing a brake van, why not make one on the 3d printer to an LMS design which was the company that inspired the 08 orginally?? peco and slaters sell wheels that could be used

The later runs of this loco run a lot better. Could you please express the pulling power of models in grammes and ounces as well. Newtons have no meaning for me and probably other people as well. Will you be reviewing the new run of the Heljan 0 gauge Deltic?. Thanks.
@aCivilServant4 жыл бұрын
You need gentle curves on O gauge layouts to avoid buffer locking as happened at 21:45. Have been tempted to get into O gauge for a while. Nice model too.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Yes you're right -mine were tight by necessity unfortunately, though most wagons (with actual sprung buffers) handle it really nicely! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I have to ask, is this the first run of Dapol's O gauge class 08? I see reviews on KZbin going as far back as 2017.

Sam I have a question. Can you remove the eye mechanism from your bachmann thomas train to not the eyes go side to side
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can do that, just by removing any of the gears, besides the ones for the wheels! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@BRMRailway4 жыл бұрын
Please add some removable sections of shelf under the rail in those gaps between the shelves. It goes through me each time I see this. It only needs a bit of a wobble and a twist and the weight of the loco will twist the track and fall off.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
haha that may be a good idea! Though it's pretty sturdy as you can see - looks terrible, but I've never had an issue! The large span is supported in the middle. Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Did you oiled the plastic toothwheels with a bit of silicone grease? Maybe it soften the sound?

If I have one of those I would modify it, and find like a much powerful motor with a fly wheel and make the exterior metal. And also modify the interior cab detail to be more like the actual thing.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
That sounds cool - i guess you'd probably be best starting from scratch in that case though! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

That front "pipe" looks more like it should be vertical, and represent the hand rail to hold onto when getting up to the front engine door. From memory, there should be a hand rail there but I can't see anything else on the model.

I was doing some research and found out that the Thomas models used in the series was gauge 1 and I wanted to ask if gauge 1 is the same as O gauge models?
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Ahh very interesting - thanks for sharing - no Gauge 1 isn't the same as O gauge! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@johnd88924 жыл бұрын
In the UK gauge 1 is 45mm and uses a scale of 1/32. Gauge 0 is 32mm and uses a scale of 1/43.5. So gauge 1 is substantially larger so it worked better for photography. First series TTE used Marklin Gauge 1 two rail models with scratch built body work.

There is some O-Gauge steam engines that weigh in around 2 kilograms. And it includes sounds and also with synchronize smoke.

I run SM32 - narrow gauge outline on O gauge track. My Bundaberg Fowler.weighs in at 4.1Kg. The Garretts and Double Fairlies are way more, but I haven't bought those. All live steam though, so they are entirely metal of course.

These were known in the netherlands as NS 600. I saw one in service at least as the late 90's. Some are still in service in the Netherlands with the gaudily named "rail force one".
@johnd88924 жыл бұрын
The NS 600 is based on the earlier BR class 11 locomotives with smaller wheels and rated higher in the BR power classification system. The Australian Victorian Railways system also had the class 11 version. Roco made an HO model in both NS and VR livery.

Does the postman play footy with your deliveries, I've had two locos that you've reviewed that have been broken in your reviews, but mine have been perfect, must be very unlucky...
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
haha I've heard another KZbinr say that - though I wish they wouldn't, as my postman is a mutual viewer, who handles everything with great care! Luck doesn't exist - it's all chance and probability - many models are poor quality these days, that's the only conclusion! In this case, the packaging is clearly to blame - there's no question that it's poor - I certainly didn't see this one as bad luck! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Hi Sam, Can I make an suggestion ? You have your layout on shelving to me it looks quite an drop from this video and the rails in some places look close to the edge . If this was me I would put some netting along the shelf held by wooden batons screwed to the shelf underneath . The idea been is if a train derails and rolls over it will drop into the net and not on the floor into a million pieces . The net should be taller than the train and fixed tight to the batons buy a good net it's better than losing a 100 pound pulse loco.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Peter, I do like the idea of netting! :D Merry Christmas, Sam :)
