He was like my Grandpa- They could, both, play guitar, fiddle/violin, harmonica and everything else! You have to love Ghost Riders, without the vocals!! I think the best guitarist is up to preference, I think the best guitarists are between- Eddie Van Halen and Angus Young, I loved Roy Clark, but I still think the GOAT lies between Angus and Eddie- but Roy is a hard 3rd for me.

I grew up hearing a few good versions of this Song, some on live shows and some in Movies. My personal favorite is The Outlaws doing it in the Studio. It's been in old western, cowboy movies, live at the Opry in Nashville, a few Fairgrounds, and on & on. Great choice ADogg.

It's true. Biggest difference between Roy and other great guitarists is that Roy, even after all those years, was just having fun. He could improvise more perfectly than anyone else, and that was just playing. When he played seriously (that are very few videos) he's even more epic.

Yeah, there's no point arguing about an objective "best guitarist ever", that's a mythical beast... but Roy is certainly in the elite all time for pure skill and competence on the instrument... and he could just as easily pull out a fiddle or a banjo or a mandolin and knock your socks off at ten paces with any one of them. Even me and my friends, who were totally into guitar-based rock back in those golden olden days, back when country was "country and western"...mostly considered dull boring hick music by the typical rock fan... even we had the deepest respect for Roy's abilities and musicianship and would gladly watch him anytime he appeared on tv.

This song has been around since the 1940s at least. A popular version with lyrics is from 1949, Vaughn Monroe! A more recent version that is popular is by The Outlaws. You should definitely check one out. Great lyrics.

This song is a reinterpretation of an old legend from pagan Europe called The Wild Hunt. This version doesn't have the lyrics, but Ghost Riders in the Sky is about cowboys being taken up into a Supernatural cattle drive in the sky led by the devil. This is in Branson, so they probably didn't want them to sing it. The song was controversial Wild Hunt legends and songs are found in both Germanic and Celtic traditions. A party of hunters sees a mighty hunter with a skull mask and antlers, and are drawn to join the hunt only to disappear in the stars. Greeks have a hunter taken into the heavens to become the constellation Orion. Jews have Nimrod, and Arabs have The Giant in the Sky. This has got to be a very old story. And since many African cultures used to keep track of seasons by nearby Sirius and the Pleaides, I speculate that the Wild Hunt may be among the oldest of all human stories, dating back to when all humans lived in Africa. And don't get me started on the Pleaides stories, which may be the oldest story of all that still survives. In any case, Ghost Riders is a cowboy version of a European myth that predates historical record. These stories are related to giant hunter legends of the eastern Mediterranean and Middle east. They are also about the same sector of the sky Africans have cared about because it allows prediction of rainfall and animal migration. These stories may be the oldest humans have ever told.

Roy Clark was without doubt one of the top stringed instrument players of all time. My preferred genre for actual listening,though, is Blues. I would refer you to Justin Johnson, a contemporary stringed instrument player who is beyond phenomenal and has amazed me repeatedly with his skill and emotional immersion in many of his recordings.

I am 72 now and have to admit I was sort of an Underground Music snob back then. If it wasn't Hendrix, Clapton or Page, I wasn't interested. Especially in someone who was a host of the corny show Hee Haw! It took 50 years before realizing how incredible he was way back then, playing just clean guitar and no bigtime effects! Just now, it gives me chills! However, let's face it, he did present himself in a comedic manner so much that many thought he was joking. He was! The joke was on us!

Mama said he fished around in his head ,said a few titles " NAW ,NAW THAT WASNT IT He Got so frustrated he finally said ,"Well just listen out for it .ITS ABOUT COWBOYS IN THE CLOUDS"!! Roy Clark is Great the 12 string is a lot harder to pick than a 6 string, and he was a master at it, You should check out Glen Campbell doing the William Tell Overture and him playing the 12 string on top of his head, Also Glen never learned to read music and played in studio recordings for a lot of great bands before he went out on his own,

There are two songs that you can listen to and get a good idea of the talent of this man! Earlier in his career he would mix comedy in with this amazing guitar playing. One of his best early songs to show his comedy is his Cover of Folsom Prison Blues!!! Then if you want to see some mind blowing guitar , He done a spanish song called Maleguena, I think that is the correct spelling of it. There are several recordings of it , but the one that blows me away the most is from the old TV show, the Odd Couple. I have never heard anything like it!

That's a wild looking 12 string guitar he's using, must've been custom made. Roy was an instrumental wizard so no matter what you put in his hands he could make it "talk." His talent was so great it allowed him to clown around while still blazing away. And yes, fun was a big part of his appeal making him quite an entertainer as well. It's a complete waste of time and energy debating who's the best guitarist, like Jon Batiste said: "It's all subjective" about the notion of best.
