I agree, don't react to Journey without Steve Perry. Dude is the best ever. And nothing against Pineda, but he's just a karaoke singer IMO. Try "Still They Ride" and "The Party's Over" if you haven't heard them yet. Great review!!!!

@@michaelasay8587 - I understand, I'm a little more sensitive to it because Journey was such a big part of my life growing up (graduated high school in 1983). And married to a Filipina for 35 years, so I'm not kidding about karaoke, it's a big part of their culture. But you are right, he is good, just not quite the same. No disrespect intended.

Well I graduated in '78 and it can only be Steve. Arnel is good, but he just sings the songs. Steve has a way of bringing so much emotion into the song, that is what makes the difference. I think it is probably the Sam Cook influence from his early years.

It was 1977. I was going to college in Boston and went to see Montrose at the Orpheum Theatre. The warmup band was this group I'd never heard of before, Journey. They literally took over the show. 3,500 people went crazy. For an encore they did Wheel In The Sky. Steve Perry sang it as he walked down the stage ramp up the isle into the seats, without missing a note. He eventually stopped midway up, right next to where I and my girlfriend were sitting at the end of the row. His voice was incredible. He looked down at us, smiled, and reached out to shake both our hands as he kept singing, then turned and slowly made his way back to the stage shaking a few other hands as he went. The gf is long gone, but the memory of that show and that moment is something I'll never forget.

Listened to the end. Watching your reactions to Journey is a complete joy. I'm like you that Pineda guy is good but if Steve "The Voice" Perry ain't singing I don't want to hear it. That man's voice is just pure magic. Saw them 3 times & I never heard a band that sounds so much better live than the studio version. Steve's voice never cracks, never sounds out of tune, or anything but perfection.

I LOVE THIS SONG! I am 56 years old. I grew up on Journey. Here's my story of this song for anyone who wants to read it (there's a moral at the end. 🙂) In life I did everything that everyone else told me to do. I got good grades, didn't disobey my parents, went to college, got a graduate degree in Biochemistry and went to work for corporate America. I bought a bungalow house on the river, and a Honda Accord. BUT...I learned very quickly that no matter how hard you work, and no matter how much you put your nose to the grindstone, and no matter how well you do everything exactly right and the way the world tells you to...LIFE IS GOING TO KICK YOUR ASS BECAUSE IT DOESN'T CARE HOW PERFECT YOU ARE!!! So, at 51 years old, I sold everything I owned, bought a massive diesel truck and a camper, took my degrees off the wall and packed them in a box, and I HIT THE ROAD!! I went where I wanted, worked the road side cafés, or whatever job turned up in whatever city, met AMAZING people, and lived life by the seat of my pants!!! EVERYONE in my family thought I was crazy, and to this day, they snub me when they feel the need - for rejecting perfection and turning into the black sheep of the family. But this song reminds me of this decision to emancipate myself because.... The day I left; the day I got in that truck, and drove away; the SECOND I saw the city in the rear view mirror on the open highway, I PUT THE SONG "WHEEL IN THE SKY" ON THE PLAYER, ROLLED THE WINDOWS DOWN, AND CRANKED IT UP SO LOUD OTHER CARS COULD HEAR IT. THIS IS MY FREEDOM SONG!! I played it on a loop for about 100 miles! EVERYONE NEEDS A FREEDOM SONG! CARPE DIEM EVERYONE!! Go live YOUR best life. Not someone ELSE'S best life!!

I was in college in the early 1980s and saw a lot of the Classic Rock bands. Steve Perry and Lou Gramm (of "Foreigner") were the best live singers I ever heard. They both sounded just as good live as they were on the records. Brad Delp (of "Boston") gets honorable mention; he was very good, but not quite on the same level as Perry and Gramm.

I didn't even know Journey existed til I found the 8 track tape of "Infinity" by Journey at my cousin's house while staying with them back in the last week of December '78'. When I started listening to it, I just let the whole thing play out, it was that good, I loved every song on the tape. I couldn't believe they were a band before Steve Perry came along, but then , that's probably why I didn't, they just weren't that good til he joined them. If you get the chance, you should listen to the whole "Infinity" album, after all, it was Steve Perry's debut with the band. This put Journey on the fast track to being a legendary rock group.

Journey was always my favorite band from my pre-teen years and seeing them live in 79 with Perry and then seeing them over and over again until Steve's departure. You are so right, you can't imagine Perry not in Journey or being their front man. All those who have come after Steve to fill his shoes, realize and respect the essence and talents of Perry. None have ever claimed to be Perry as there is but one Voice and it's his. He created so much per writing, leading and fronting Journey as a hit making machine recruited to get the band on the radio and transform it into a top Rock Act and what became a top Arena Live Performance Group. Arnel Pineda being plucked as their lead for the past decade with Journey is humbling. No disrespect to him as Journey's longest Vocalist since Perry but no one will ever for me be Steve Perry and do all he could with that Voice as such an emotional vocalist/musician. He is extraordinary and special even today still lending his talents to other artists and recording now in his renewed love of music. I have seen Journey minus Perry but it is not the same for me: The celebration lies in the Musical Legacy of the Band created mostly with Perry as a key song writer, producer, lead and hit maker.

One of my top five faves from Journey! I saw them three times back in the 80’s and they were always so good! One of the only bands I ever heard that sounded as good live as they did in the studio! It really warms my 53 year old heart to see young people like you listening to and appreciating how great this band was and is! I’ve got two kids in their late 20’s and they grew up listening to me play Journey and other great bands but until the last few years, I’d not known of other young people who even knew who they were much less listening to them and that made me sad. Great music should be kept alive and passed on to young people like you and on and on because it’s too good to be lost to history! Thank you for helping to keep this music out there and for exposing other young people to it as well. I love your pure reactions! I love your reviews. Now you can understand why we brag about how awesome these 70's rock bands are like no other. Journey is a golden classic. They weren't studio musicians in those days. All performed live with real talent. You are always smiling. Thanks.

You need to listen to Why can't this night go on forever, it's one song I can listen to over and over and not get sick of hearing it. It's his voice , and I wish I'd seen them too

I fully agree - Journey is not Journey without Steve Perry. I saw "not-Journey" with their replacement lead singer Arnel Pineda on their first tour with him. He actually sang the lyrics to this song wrong! He sang "Made of silver, not of play". The line is "Made of silver, not of clay"! "Play" doesn't even make sense!!! "Wheel In the Sky" was Journey's first big hit. It is considered a signature song by Journey fans. If you can't get the words right, you shouldn't be singing it, at least not as the band's new lead singer! It literally took YEARS for someone to finally tell him what the actual lyric was. I've actually seen them twice with Pineda, but both times were because of the other bands on the bill. The last (and quite likely final time) was at Day 2 of the Classics West Concert in 2017. That day opened with Earth, Wind and Fire, then the not Steve Perry led Journey, and closed with Fleetwood Mac. I actually bought the tix because of the Day 1 closing act - The Eagles. If I could have just purchased the Day 1 tickets and avoided Journey entirely, I would have.

Love Journey too!! Was lucky enough to see them in 1981. 💥♥️. I can't watch Arnell with Journey now. I tried it's not the same. I grew up with the original. 🤷‍♀️

This song is the one that got me hooked. The Infinity album was the first album I bought with my own money. I was 7 years old. I’ve still got that album. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert back in 1986.

I know there are plenty of Journey with Perry fans here, and I get that. But Adogg, pre-Perry Journey rocks it too! Try On a Saturday Night if you ever want to see what they were like before Steve Perry joined. Gregg Rolle and Neal Schon shared the vocals and they're both awesome singers.

You may want to put a link to the one without Perry, because there are a couple versions with Steve singing it from '78. I love Steve, but I love Gregg too. Actually, I really like the combo of them.

The keyboard player here was their former lead singer who was demoted and eventually left. He was the one who sang Black Magic Woman with Santana.
