What I love about Elvis, especially as a young man in the beginning of his career, is his sense of humor, especially how he could be silly, even self-deprecating-- not taking himself or anything he was doing too seriously. Born and raised in Memphis, I've been asked everywhere else I've lived as an adult (which is a lot of places, coast to coast) if I ever saw Elvis. Like he was just strolling down Memphis streets. He wasn't, but I did see him once, at Graceland, when I was an undergrad shooting a video out there. His uncle, who was the gatekeeper, graciously let me shoot all I wanted until he suddenly asked me to shut the equipment off for a minute. A black limo came down the drive-- Elvis's daughter, who looked just like him, was sitting farthest from me, but I noticed her first. Then I looked in the window next to where I was and saw it was Elvis. He gave me a nod, then a little salute as the busy traffic eased and the driver pulled out onto what now is Elvis Presley Blvd. Sadly, he died 2 days later. He was a good guy, and Memphis was very proud to call him our favorite son, as he called us his home, though he was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. RIP EP. Love watching your reactions, Dogg!

Just remember that songs back in those days had to be short because radio stations wouldn't play a song that was more than three minutes long. That remained the case until the late 1960s. Nobody would even record a song longer because it would never get radio play if they did.

This was his screen test for his first movie called Love Me Tender. Very few performers can do all three..sing hard, play hard the guitar and dance all at the same time. That is talent. He was a musical genius..all those moves were always spontaneous at the moment unlike Madonna, MJ etc which were rehearsed and rehearsed and choreographed. Notice how limber his body is.Like rubber. He was double jointed and could do some moves I have never seen another performer duplicate..though they keep trying.Elvis is the king of music.

a little insight into this from one who was around then. This was a test card so that the camera man could get some idea of what Elvis did and how the camera would pick him up, as they hadnt seen him live, only stories. Elvis walked on and shrugged his shoulders not knowing what they wanted. He noticed only one giant static camera in from of him and couldnt move around the stage like he would normally do on a typical live performance so he stayed fairly static. He mimed to his record here too. This little performance was never meant to be seen by the general public but although he is taking it easy, not giving 100%, its still great to have it.

This footage was lost for decades (guess we are all glad it was found). It is a screen test (to see if Elvis Presley was photogenic enough!). He is lip synching and the ''guitar'' didn't even have strings. But, well, let's just say the studio big shots blew their little minds and immediately offered him millions and a long term contract! It's funny (in retrospect) that they were not sure if he would look good on camera.
