This song came out in 1966. They were a very popular folk-rock group in the 60's, comprised of John and Michelle Phillips, Cass Elliott, and Denny Dougherty (lead on this song). Other great songs to check out are Creeque Alley, I Saw Her Again, Dream a Little Dream of Me, Dedicated to the One I love, and Monday, Monday.

Song was released Dec '65, & was their first hit. Their song, Monday, Monday was their biggest hit. Denny Dougherty sang lead on this one, John Phillips & his then-wife, Michelle (the blonde) wrote the song (John wrote Monday, Monday as well), & Cass Elliot was the other female. She had a great career on her own after the Mamas & Papas, but sadly, died in 1974, at the way-too-early age of 32. Dedicated To The One I Love is another great one by the Ms&Ps.

I Saw Her Again Last Night, Monday, Monday, Dedicated to the One I Love, Words of Love are some of their better songs but there are many more worth seeking out as well. After the group broke up Cass Elliott (the brunette) had a brief (she died at 32 from heart failure) but very successful career and has some great songs as well-Make Your Own Kind of Music, Dream a Little Dream of Me, I'm Coming to the Best Part of My Life, It's Getting Better among others.

The lead male singer was called Papa Denny. Don't know last name. Denny's pitch and the quality of his voice make him the ideal lead. Everyone is gone now except for Mama Michelle (tall blonde), married to the group's founder John Phillips. As for the personal machinations of the group, go to some kind of pop history. The group was primarily mid to late 60's so while the English groups predominated, the folksy sound of the Mamas and Papas provided some variety.

Songs were made for the AM radio.. usually under 3 minutes. The blonde sin the group was from California and wanted to move back ( they were in NYC where the Folk music scene was) so she & John Phillips, her husband/ man in the fur hat) wrote a perfect pop song! “Creeque Alley” is the one I would do next. It describes their history and includes mentions of other people from the folk scene from that time too. But “Monday, Monday” showcases Denny Doherty’s vocals again, if you want to hear more from him.
