As a kid I loved this movie! Daredevil is one of my favorite superheroes, and I just loved seeing him realized on screen. It wasn’t until I was an adult I realized how bad this movie was. 😂 I’m just glad we got the new Daredevil series, (which is dope) because it’d be so sad if this was the only adaptation we had.

I remember reading an interview with Colin Farrell after the movie came out, and he said the director basically let the actors go nuts while they were filming, then the studio made him go back and edit/change a lot of stuff to make it PG-13. For instance, he improvised a bunch of f-bombs, that had to be changed in post later. When he says, "I want a bloody costume", you can clearly see his lips saying "I want a fuckin' costume." I agree with Chris - this movie would've worked better if it had just focused on the Daredevil/Kingpin conflict, and saved other characters like Elektra and Bullseye for the sequels. As is, it's so stuffed to the gills with characters and subplots that there's no focus to anything (and the Director's Cut is even more overstuffed, adding an entire subplot about Matt defending a man on trial for murder). I highly recommend anyone watch the show, though; it's probably the best comic book TV show of all time.

what, we're not getting Elektra next? The one thing in this movie that stands out to me: horrible sweeping establishing shots over a terribly rendered CGI cityscape. This was the mark of terrible superhero media of the time. The other thing that never came up, Affleck said he only took this role because he really wanted to play Batman and we were still in the post-Schumacher era and he figured he'd never get the chance.

The Director's Cut, which is a fan favorite version of the film, is more superior than the original cut of the film, having an R rating and 10 minutes of new never before seen footage.

Very much this. I saw this in the theater with friends and we left thinking it was simply "meh." Then we saw the director's cut a year or so later and we all bought a copy and have sung its praises since. The DC not only added another necessary subplot in (starring Coolio) but it also REMOVED a lot of the excess romance as well.

Exactly! The bad thing is that I don't know where can I watch the Director's Cut🥲 I had it on blu-ray like 10 years ago lmao so it's looong gone. I guess I'll have to manage with the theatrical cut...

About Daredevil using his sonar sense to "see" and dodge bullets...unless thugs go out of their way to purchase subsonic ammo, the bullets are going to get to DD before the sound does.

The Daredevil comics in the early 80's under Frank Miller's direction, were some of the best comics ever. I took a chance hoping this film would be good, as a gritty sort of super hero movie. I was really surprised when he started jumping 12 stories to the ground, too. I think it was the popularity of Raimi's Spiderman, that made them have him move like that. I honestly think that was the same reason that the Halle Berry Catwoman movie was so ill conceived. Instead of just making her a master thief, who is the female equivalent of the Batman in many ways they tried to give her super cat abilities.

Movie is fairly accurate to the comics at the time. * DD dodges bullets, chi/qi powered martial arts. * Elektra has even crazier ninja powers (stealth is effectively invisibility, mental illusions, mental coercion), dances around wolverine like he’s a chump. * Bullseye’s only power is deadly accuracy. He’s got an inferiority complex, dislikes authority and IIRC, is borderline suicidal. Don’t think there’s any weird sexual stuff. There’s a weird rock/paper/scissors thing going on between the three. Daredevil almost always beats Bullseye, who almost always beats Elektra, who almost always beats Daredevil. This dynamic may have changed over the years since.

Appreciate the video but man, that whole fast-forward sequence nearly gave me a headache. Also, Chris really needs to watch the Daredevil T.V. series. It's one of the best things that ever came out of Netflix (now on Disney plus, I believe).

I only saw this once, ages ago, but I remember being annoyed that Matt Murdock - an independent defense attorney - is seen in court apparently prosecuting a case. There are any number of things wrong in this movie, but you'd think the writers could at least watch a couple of episodes of Law and Order, just to get familiar with the basics.

I love this movie. I was born in 1997. This movie prepared me to read daredevil comics. By the time I was graduating highschool daredevil came out on Netflix in 2015. It was like a child hood dream come true. I already appreciated the movie for introducing me to the character. But after all those years of reading frank Miller Ed Brubaker to Bendis and wade. This show is peak marvel. Growing up I loved all the marvel characters. I think Matt will always be up there with the likes of Logan Tony and Peter.

If you think about it Burton' batman raimi's spiderman and the xmen movie from the early 2000s and the blade is what got superhero movies popular because it shows that you can turn a comic book into a movie

I used to loev this movie. I was in my early 20s when it came out. To be fair I think most of my love wasn't really for the movie but because I had a crush on Jennifer. Hence I seen the follow up Elektra. You should check it out also. I prefer Elktra over Daredevil (both movie wise and character wise). Just watched the trailer for both before starting this and now I see it as cheesy. Still, this was a time when hero movies were trying hard to be good. Thenk goodness for the MCU saving things.

I would go on the stand and state that DD the director's cut is a decent film. Adjusted the tone harder and added the important lawyer storyline. The issue is that this is a movie that wants to sate the child audience built by Spider-Man and still be gritty. It would take until the Netflix shows that adult Marvel content could be shown.

Outside of the shitty CGI, I loved this movie when I was younger and didn't analyze characters at all. As an adult it is really easy to poke a ton of holes in this version of Daredevil. Daredevil is almost cripplingly Catholic. He does NOT set out to kill people. His whole schtick is that everyone can be redeemed and killing is anathema to him. Daredevil does have a superpower, and it is his amazing senses. They show this beautifully in the Netflix series with Matt being able to tell when people are lying and locating them in buildings floors away by their ridiculously bad cologne. Daredevil cannot leap off of 50 story buildings and land in a superhero pose but he does Parkour and is extremely hard to hit having a nearly prescient ability to dodge ranged attacks and melee. One of my biggest complaints about the Netflix shows was how the heroes of Daredevil and the Punisher were almost constantly injured and bloody. Yes it made it more realistic that they can get hurt, but these guys are almost superhuman in their abilities yet always getting hurt.

I *love* that from Matt Murdock's perspective, the playground fight is just him sexually harassing and then physically assaulting a random woman. It's so perfect for his version of the character.

It seems to me that this film was a studio-induced mess. PRODUCER: "Insert a plot arc with a female lead because we need to draw the female audience. Write in an all-CGI action sequence because other, better movies did the same and were more profitable. Make Daredevil physically superhuman, because Spider Man was and that one was profitable." WRITER: "But should we make Michael Clarke Duncan a bigger part of the movie?" PRODUCER: "Of course not! All that would do is alienate white audiences!"
