There’s no plot holes, only timelines that distant from the movie events. These are characters dealing with underground activities that are too small and low key for the Avengers to deal with. It’s only because it was canceled they now want to claim it wasn’t connected.

I know your comment is old, but another adorable thing is that his voice cracked slightly when he said the word "care" when asking if she'd care to join him for dinner. Everything about this scene, about Kingpin's body language, brief eye contact before looking away, cracking voice, and the way he nervously steps back, works up the courage to step forward, the way he nervously fidgeted with his hands and immediately turned back around when Vanessa called out to him showcased Kingpin in such a vulnerable, self conscious way that, iirc, is extremely different than the comics. I grew up reading the comics in the 90's. Kingpin's love and devotion for Vanessa was one of the best things about the character. (He was even going to give up a life of crime and retire with Vanessa in Japan, if memory serves me correctly) I don't remember his comic book counterpart being awkward and vulnerable around Vanessa. But seeing Vincent portray him this way (also his temper amd fighting style is different) made this version of the character much more compelling to me.

It's seriously a masterclass in filming and cinematography. Especially after the moment Fisk approaches Vanessa after being asked why he doesn't buy every painting. Look particularly for the placement of the orange and blue paintings in those shots. Notice how after he says the line of a 'woman that can be bought...' the shots are shifted so that blue paintings are in the background as opposed to the orange one. It's like the orange one was for tension and the blue one was for connection/relief.

VD is perfect. His physicality as an actor is just pure unbelievable talent. Like especially the way he nods and steps back immediately as Vanessa says she's the only one working there that night- it was as if Fisk was expecting her to say no anyway, and when she did he was like, "Yup, I didn't think so either." Also LOOK at the FLAME-like tones in the painting in their background - POETRY - that's what this scene is. Oh God, it is amusing how even the characters' body language and each camera angle on Netflix Marvel have way more critical merit than the entire three shows of Disney+ Marvel combined (not including What If as it's animation). It's so sad to see the quality going down in the MCU and no one would care anyway because it's like these days all they are aiming to please are the social media fangirls. Everything MCU puts out is so politicized in Disney+ which robs the flavour that Netflix Marvel shows used to have in the 2010s, and as the audience, our palates are no longer being trained to recognize quality entertainment. Goodbye to the Marvel I used to love, it was wonderful knowing you. 💔

Daredevil is unironically more political than any of the Disney+ shows, more particularly in regards to socio-economic justice and the writers of the show even compared Fisk to Trump and Putin. Just because it’s not on the nose doesn’t mean it’s not there. These shows are just better written all around and have more episodes to develop the characters. The more “mature” tone is also refreshing and allows more creative freedom. In what are the Disney+ shows politicized? I’d argue that show like ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ wasn’t political and complex as it could’ve been. It also came off as pretty tone deaf like with the character Isaiah Bradly suddenly being okay with the way the government treated him and his friends after Sam got him a small exhibition in Steve Rogers museum.

I love that the first we see of Fisk on this show is his vulnerability and his attraction to Vanessa. We've heard so many horrifying things about him before this episode, but his and Vanessa's budding romance draws us in and lures us into complacency --- making us think, if he can be this sensitive and gentle and thoughtful with this woman, could he really be that bad? I cannot physically stand to watch at the end of the episode when Fisk kills Anatoly. But the fact that it's so violent and jarring is kind of genius. The stark contrast between a nervous and vulnerable man out of his element and an unhinged, bloodthirsty monster truly makes the episode stand out and adds so much depth and intrigue to Fisk's character.

People might think that he convinced Vanessa to go out with him with the "a woman who can be bought..." line. But I'd argue she had made up her mind earlier - when he accepted no for an answer. She was testing him - here was this huge, hulking man with a lot of wealth. He could easily have been an entitled, aggressive manchild who didn't respect her boundaries. Instead, without questioning her, he walks away and respects her autonomy. It lets her know he's not a threat, despite his physicality. That's when she calls him back with "That's it?"

The best villains are the ones with layers. The ones who we can understand how they got to this point, we see their human sides and learn that aren't 100% evil. Show me villain more layered than Wilson Fisk
