I think it's really important that new nurses start on a night shift for their first job. It teaches them a lot of autonomy and problem solving skills because the majority of resources are not as available as they are during the day. Another good reason is that it teaches new nurses how to network with other nurses as a lot of the experienced night nurses are typically PRN and they have a lot of contacts at other units and other facilities that give new nurses options to look into when they are ready to switch to days and or switch to a different unit. I started out on nights, now I'm a NP and my wife also started out on nights as well as a tech, she went to school ar the same time now she is a PA, her sister just got her first job as an RN and we both encouraged her to start off on nights because it teaches you a lot, builds character, enhances your skills and helps you grow in your career because let's face it, at some point we move on and want to find something different after you honed in on your skills as a new grad.

I love this comment so much and I agree with you completely👏🏽 especially the part where you mention learning how to network with other nurses and doctors🤩. If there was one thing I was extremely nervous about when first started off as a new graduate it was talking to doctors! 🫠 but now as a dayshift nurse when I need an order I have the full confidence to go up to them and ask for exactly what I need, thanks to nights 🙏🏽😊 HAVE A BLESSED SUNDAY!

Maybe for the clinical setting you are talking about. Nurses don't work only in hospitals with good support. You can be in a small facility for many specialties where there's no one. You are by yourself and learn very little. I guess there's many factors that make a first nursing experience helpful or not.

I used to work nights as a security guard at a hospital and I almost died driving home on several occasions. My tip is to find something to eat as you drive home. If that doesn't work, DO NOT DRIVE!! PULL OVER AND NAP FOR 10-15 MINS. If you don't, believe me, you WILL eventually fall asleep on the wheel and you WILL harm or kill someone. and you won't even know you fell asleep doing it.

Everyone told me that nights was gonna be awful…I’ve been on nights for 1 month now and haven’t had any trouble yet My first night was the WORST but after that, I adjusted pretty quickly and don’t get tired during my shift :)

Night shifts truly suck!! I could deal with them when I was younger, but I tried a job on night shift a few months ago and I only lasted two weeks, just couldn't do it!! No desire for that life style, sleeping all day when it's 70 degrees out is not for me, and just being tired all of the time!! I am SO relieved to be working a 32 hours a week day shift job!! Not worth any amount of money for me, but if I was younger again and had student loans it might be a temptation!

Hey girl! I am so glad you made this video even thought I am going into RT I agree with the driving home after working a night shift and it is exhausting. I worked the night shift as a CNA and gladyly I lived 5 minutes away from home, but I know how exhausting is!

Oh my goodness I would legit love nothing more than to live only five minutes away from work because my 20 minute drive Felt so extensive after a night shift😮‍💨 but hey ALL degrees are welcomed here so thank you for the support babes 💙

When I was an LVN years ago, I worked the night shift which was okay, but my job was an hour and fifteen-minute drive from my house. I'd leave at 5:30pm to get there by 7pm and when I'd get off in the morning, I'd get so sleepy driving home that I'd pull over to take a nap, some days I wouldn't get home until 9:30 or 10am. I'm a new grad RN now, and I'm going to be applying at a nearby hospital about 20 minutes away. Hopefully, if I don't have to leave for work until 6:30pm, and can be home by 8am, then night shift should be a bit more bearable this time around.

Working from M-F / 9 to 5 is the worst. Cant make appointments no where , cant be home for a delivery, stay home when kids are sick, etc....unless you take PTO .. I hate office hours .. i ended up using all my PTO to go to the Doctor, dentist, going to interviews, school meetings... PTO is not real time off to enjoy when working the day shift.

The sleep schedule issue you have here is the exact reason that I switched to nights. I happen to be one of those people who can easily sleep past 5pm. I also on days found myself sleeping on my break, and being dangerously tired driving home, wondering whether I'd get home safely, then a lot of the time, I'd basically go home, then when I was turning off my car after coming home, I'd take a nap immediately after parking at home, yes a nap, in my car, at home, in broad daylight.

I'm a night Shift PSW at a retirement home and I also foster neonadal kittens And I like it because I can bring my neonatals with me to work. And take care of them around-the-clock cause really Who honestly sleeps during the daytime on night Shift, I also have 6 kids. My sleep consist of 4 to 2 hour sleeps If i'm lucky I get six hours of full sleep It's probably not the best thing for you , but it works
