You are a great teacher! I’ve been playing bass for 50 years but because of a cyst in my right thumb I never learned slap pop technique. I finally had the cyst removed and now in my senior years I am working on double thumbing, pop and slap technique. I know Victor and I am a big fan but I think you’re touch beats Victor.. although he’s a god so I can’t take anything away from him. But I really appreciate your touch and instruction. I’d love to meet you sometime. If you’re ever in Nashville please look me up. You have inspired me! Thanks

I am a drummer, that has been playing Bass for about 2 years. I’ve been told, that I am pretty good, and fast learner. I do pick up Bass line rather quickly, But I have been around music all of my life. And I can’t slap Bass to save my life. Now that’s mostly because I have not put the time and effort into learning that. My question is, am I supposed to be slapping against the string, or in a downward motion? Hearing the click, click, click seems rather annoying when I’m “Trying to slap”. But this is the one thing I would love and am determined to master. I’m able to play some of my favorite tracks, from beginning to end, but it sucks when I hear some of my other favorite songs that involve slapping, because I am just not there yet. Great video.

I was trying to learn slapping with the "over" technique and hat big trouble alternating with plucking the high strings, because the thumb has to "bounce" off immediately, otherwise the string is muted.... and then you have to move the thumb back to the string afterwards. I hope this will be easier with the "under" technique, as it looks more like you slap "through" the string, creating resonance with only one movement. Is this correct?

Hello Sir @Darrick Please in terms of Strings....is it adviceable to achieve a good slap tone with a nickel alloy wound set of strings?
@jeremiahdaniel63393 жыл бұрын
I don't know about Nickel alloys, but Nickel wound bass guitar strings are pretty good for slap bass. You might wanna checkout Daddario or Ernie Ball as a starting point.

Based on my experience, your hand/thumb position while slapping is largely dictated by how high or low you sling your bass. A player like Flea uses a long guitar strap so his bass hangs down at thigh level. With a bass slung that low, it’s much more comfortable to slap from above with your thumb pointing down. Jazz bassists, on the other hand, wear their basses much higher - sometimes as high as mid-chest level - where it’s more natural to slap from below with the thumb pointing up.

I'm mostly getting thuds and ringing sounds and that's just from the E string. The E string is the only one that seems like this thumb smacking technique works, the other strings just make annoying thud sounds and the Note I want comes out as an after thought when my thumb has moved off the string. I've tried doing this on the fretboard and it's just more thud, and closer to the neck pickup it's not any better. Am I supposed to get the sound right away or does that take years also? Popping is as close as I've gotten but it's not slap and it takes more energy- plus it looks wrong when I do it. Can't make my action any lower or else there's fret buzz, and the strings I put on today are as bright as ever so idk what I'm doing wrong. 🤷♂️ I've always kind of hated this method because of the noise my thumb makes as I come down- that clacking noise nothing like what I hear from bassists, it's mostly the pop I hear. Even dead notes to me sound more like the thumb is forcing the string to move instead of patting it. The louder or harder I am about it the worse it all rings out of the amp and I just don't like it 😅 I don't mean to offend those that slap like that, which seems to be everybody, but it must not be meant for me. I get faster results from letting the thumb do all the work flicking- though it is disappointing when I can't do that for the intro of "John The Fisherman" where Les is basically slapping two strings at once. Idk 🤷♂️
@gd-lockc76182 жыл бұрын
Make sure you are going through the string as well. You smack the string, but you still stroke it slightly with your thumb
@jakefoxx79782 жыл бұрын
@@gd-lockc7618 I've actually noticed that with the D and G today. I've got a lot of fine tuning ahead of me but newer strings are my best bet right now.
