Great exercise, thanks! Haven't seen it before. Another great one to add for finger dexterity and independence is (what I call) the String Hopper: fret all fingers somewhere on the A string next to eachother [1,2,3,4], then from index to pinky and back, use one finger to fret the string lower and upper (so on the E and D) and hop back and forth with one finger while the rest stays put on the A. This learns to separate your mind muscle connections for the tendons in your forearm. Will give great control over especially ring finger and pink, which tend to move together all over the place 😅

One thing I noticed is that the instructor is playing the bass in the folk guitar position (because he is an advanced, skilled player). IF you are a beginner that is a no no. Why because your body has not developed the proper form, technique, and dexterity to play in the folk guitar position. IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER BASSISTS START BY SITTING IN THE CLASSICAL POSITION (The bass guitar on the left knee with the left on a footstool at a 20 degree angle outward, making the bass guitar headstock is even with your eyes and your butt is sitting on the edge of the chair. Back must be erect and straight. NO SLOUCHING)! This position will allow you to avoid injury and pain, especially in your shoulders, neck, wrists, fingers, and back. Next, he is demonstrating (for video) of course) the left hand technique in one the lowest fretboard register position of the bass guitar. YOU SHOULD START OFF THE TECHNIQUE IN THE HIGHEST REGISTER OF THE BASS GUITAR (like 12th fret and higher) TILL YOU DEVELOP THE FINGER DEXTERITY TO GO AND PRACTICE THE EXERCISE ON THE NEXT LOWEST REGISTER ON THE BASS GUITAR FRETBOARD.

50 years old and been working in IT, typing everyday. Sometimes the inflammation in the wrist and fingers just saps all the hand strength. When that happens I just pull out my short scale bass. And honestly, it's become about 90% of my practicing on a short scale. Through my little 40w practice amp I can't tell the difference in sound to a standard length. And I know the bass purists will frown, but I think most people can stop torturing themselves on a standard length and just go down to short scale bass and be fine.

@heftyjo2893 I hear you. I’m 67 and I struggle with arthritis in my fretting hand thumb. I haven’t gotten myself a short scale bass but I’ve seen videos about them and I’ve noticed there’s no difference in tone. Any “purist” that frowns on a thing that’s working for someone is immature and inexperienced. Keep it alive, brother !

First of all you have to train your fingers by doing slow, no tempo practice. Second when you practice relax the body and practice watching for body tension. This means training your arm, shoulders, and fingers to move slowly as possible; but, when you move your fingers and start to feel tension STOP AND PAUSE. Release the tension in your body, shoulders, arms, hands, and fingers. Look for where you body is plus your hands and fingers. Did you do the finger movement properly? Did your shoulders and arms tense up? Did your right hand, arm, and shoulder tense up with the left hand finger movement? DID YOU HOLD YOUR BREATHE WHEN SHOULD NOT HAVE? Did you tense your stomach? Did you curl your toes WITH BODY TENSION? OVERALL YOU MUST PRACTICE SLOW AND RELAXED WITH NO TENSION!👈🏿😲

I find my left shoulder and the left thumb hurting...is it the tension or something normal
@MARLONdaman2 ай бұрын
@ it is tension. You need to sit with the bass guitar in the classical position (the bass guitar resting on left knee with the left a footstool or a stack of books). Make sure the headstock of the bass guitar (where the tuning pegs are) is at eye level with your eyes. Sit with your butt being on the eye of a folding chair, your with back straight. Now just sit in that position with shoulders relaxed. If you feel tension at this position this means you are either not sitting right or you are tensing your shoulders, arms, and stomach. While sitting in this position BREATHE AND RELAX. There should be no tension in your body. If it feels awkward at first your body will get used to it; but, you have to adjust yourself until you find “sweet spot” in that position. Finally raise your left arm up to the fretboard. Curl your fingers like you are gripping a baseball. Place your the tips of the fingers on the fretboard with your thumb on the back of the bass neck directly between the index and middle finger or just the middle finger. NOW JUST SIT AND POSE AND RELAX IN THAT POSITION LOOKING FOR AND RELEASING ANY TENSION IN YOUR BODY!

@ if you are hurting then you need to PUT DOWN YOUR BASS GUITAR AND LET YOUR SHOULDER AND FINGERS REST TILL THEY HEAL! No need to hurt yourself doing this!👈🏿
@MARLONdaman2 ай бұрын
@ if you are hurting it is because you are probably trying to practice your left hand technique in the lowest registers (1 through 10 frets) of the bass guitar fretboard. Start at the highest register position of the bass fretboard (the 12 to the 21st frets) and practice your bass guitar techniques till you get the finger dexterity to move up to the next highest register on the bass guitar fretboard. YOU MUST KNOW WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO DO IT PRACTICING THAT TECHNIQUE SLOW AS POSSIBLE WITH NO TEMPO (No metronome), STOPPING, ADJUSTING, AND POSING IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR TECHNIQUE THE FIRST TIME YOU FEEL TENSION IN YOUR FINGERS, HANDS, ARMS, AND SHOULDERS!👈🏿 Tension is what causes injuries and the same mistakes from constantly practicing a technique over and over and never getting the technique right.👈🏿

@@MARLONdaman makes sense about tension. I definitely do this when I’m doing a fill/run. I’ll definitely work on this. It makes sense because a lot of great bass players looks so effortless when they do runs

Mannn my third finger needs these excercises it don’t even wanna lift off the string lol. All the others have no issues. I’ve developed work arounds and still able to play bass well but yeh I need this for sure

Warm up your body with some arm rotations and wiggling of your fingers. Next do finger stretches of each finger, stretching of your wrist, stretching of your arms, stretching of your back, and stretching of your shoulders. This will loosen up your fingers to do what they’re supposed to do IF you know what they’re supposed to do.

Learning to drag your fingers across the fretboard versus picking them up requires very slow, no tempo practice, remembering to breathe and PAUSING AND POSING to relax and release any tension in your fingers, arms, and shoulders. THIS TRAINS YOUR BRAIN AND FINGERS THE MUSCLE MEMORY TO FUNCTION THE EXERCISE PROPERLY WITH NO TENSION IN YOUR BODY.

I would start on the highest register on the bass guitar (the 12th through the 21st frets) till I get the finger dexterity to master that exercise. I would put the bass guitar in the CLASSICAL POSITION (Bass body on the left knee with left foot on a footstool or a set of books). This allows me to reach my fretboard without bending my back or neck completely to see the notes. The classical position also helps in avoiding injury to your wrist, arm, and back. It helps reduce muscle tension. Make sure you sit in this position with your butt on the each of a chair. Your back should be straight. Your fingers should be curled with your fingertips on the frets (not your finger pads because it is for a different style of playing)! Keep your left wrist slightly straight with your thumb resting on the back of the neck in alignment with your middle finger or between the index and middle finger. SIT IN THIS POSITION IN FRONT OF A MIRROR. Relax and release any body tension, especially in the shoulders and arms. Your eyes should be even with the top of the bass guitar head stock!👈🏿 DO THIS FOR ABOUT 1 MINUTE EVERYDAY FINDING YOUR BASS GUITAR “SWEET SPOT”.
