If you drain the oil first (from a hot engine) you will get more out including debris. There is less chance of any oil coming from the filter as it should be empty.

I'm about to do my daughters A1.. Says 4.5 ltrs on lots sites.. Surely that's too much for a 1.4

Hi sorry I never got this question not sure why first time ive seen it, but if still helps the air filter can be changed every 2 years or depending on the mileage so yes you can change it independently of the oil service.
