we haven’t really spent a lot of time with the actor who plays michael, but his scene with jonas is one of my favorite scenes in the show. the understanding that dawns on his face when he realizes what he needs to do, the decision to do it anyway to save his son…it’s just so beautiful and well-done and yeah it’s so wild to see them all during the Before Times. everything is so light and happy, even with the undercurrent of something being wrong with michael ):

IMHO the best episode of "Dark" ever. To see this happiness before all will soon collapse, to be able to slow down for a minute, before this show throws all its characters into a maelstrom of inevitable and absolute tragic events - priceless. And even in this fragile time of peace there is a dark core, like a festering wound, that will be revealed later in a jaw-dropping moment of revelation. A masterpiece of cinematic art.

This episode is one of the best. A lot of viewers often rate characters on how tragic they are, but they often forget Jonas. Imagine wanting to make things right, only to discover that nothing can’t be changed and that you are the reason your father kills himself. And your destiny is to become an evil time master who wants to obliterate everything. Jonas is so tragic, and props to Louis Hofmann who plays him wonderfully.

Forgot to add a note here: 5:09 - What I mean is that the portal is deep underground and Jonas would have come out of it at the same spot he entered, meaning he'd need to ascend all the way back to the top the same way he came down. What did he see? What does Sic Mundus's headquarters look like almost 100 years later, in 2019?

11:20 Jonas didn't really disappear after his father's death, but spent several months in a psychiatric clinic (said in season 1). Everyone else was only told that he was in France at the time. But Bartosh knew exactly where he was and made a move on Martha anyway. In that sense, Bartosh was a real rat and not really a friend! 15:45 Imagine standing in front of your own, younger self! What would you do or say? 27:10 Adam lied! He always lied, just like Noha! He lied to his younger self! They lied to people to get them to do what they wanted!

@michaelklaus3 ай бұрын
then again, Martha's family knows that she was into Jonas... it is kinda unclear if she hid that better in front of Jonas and the other teens; equally it seems like Jonas never said anything to Bartosz... oddly enough, Jonas and Bartosz... do they even have one dialog with one another in this episode? It seems like Magnus and Bartosz are close friends but Jonas is kinda... out of the loop a bit; so does Jonas know that Bartosz is into Martha, too? It is evident when he talks to her about not making it to the party; here it seems obvious that Bartosz hid his feelings in front of her and the other teens; he has to find a moment alone with her; but is that because he hides that from Jonas? or is that to not get embarassed by the others? it seems like the boys never really talked about their crushes for Martha... which just says guys do not talk about feelings enough on top of that of course there is the 1x01 exchange between Jonas and Martha in the woods; she says she had written messages but never send them; so each of them thinks that the other one made a move and after getting it on they both didn't speak about it again... did not have the chance to; and how would they? some people weirdly act as if Jonas and Martha said they were in a relationship in 1x01 although they explicitly use a different wording that makes it clear they were not; and then they confuse themselves here thinking that Jonas and Martha were in a relationship before the lake scene, which also should be obvious that they are not;

Yes I would assume that Hannah estranged herself from Ines after Michael’s death as when he kills himself, we can see she is still in the picture in episode 1 and then is ripped out later.
@ChannelNamePending6993 ай бұрын
Makes sense!
@michaelklaus3 ай бұрын
@@ChannelNamePending699 I added that to last episodes comments but I might as well say it here again; the estrangement is expressed through the voice message in 1x01 and the Kahnwald family picture; the voice message is listened to by Ines shortly before the 28 minute mark; it happens after the scene with Hannah and Aleksander; (most noteworthy, Aleksander expresses his condolences and delivers one of the few mentions of Michael's name; when ask how they are holding up Hannah lies... which is then followed by their seemingly family secret revealed in the voice message) Hannah complains about the recurring power outtage and assumes that Ines wants them "out of the house"; this reveals that the Kahnwald home is still owned by Ines and apparently she also holds the contract on power delivery; the outages might also simply be due to the time travel shenanigans but Hannah can't know that; but then Hannah notes that Jonas has not seen his grandmother Ines in over three months; meaning that Ines cut ties with them shortly after the funeral... probably due to her knowledge of the contents of the letter but Hannah can not know that either; and then there is the picture; those are actually 2 different pictures; the one that hangs on the wall of the Kahnwald home is the same that was seen on Michael's desk on June 21st, 2019 and was the one where somebody has taken out Ines; we have just seen Hannah do a similar thing with a picture with her, Ulrich, and Katharina that she folded into a picture of just Ulrich and her; so 2x05 confirmed that Hannah was the one removing Ines from the picture; but even before that the 2 version told its own story; one version shows Ines, Hannah, and Jonas smiling while Michael looks not even in the camera; this is the one at the Kahnwald home; but Ines has a version where they all look in the camera but nobody is smiling at all; they definitely retook that picture; it would be odd to assume that they all forgot to smile and had to take another one where Michael was suddenly distracted and they didn't do a third; but it would make perfect sense if they first took the smiling picture but then had a disagreement about taing another picture with Michael also looking at the camera; because that would explain why they all look grumpy; and the disagreement is probably due to Ines insisting to take a picture where her son doesn't absentmindedly look elsewhere; sue to the motif of repeating behavioral patterns it only seems logical that both women mainly cared about their son while taking the picture so it seems like the two women were already at odds before but after Michael's death Ines removed herself figuratively from the picture while Hannah removed Ines literally from a picture;

31:22 so this shot is basically why Mikkel is sick on this day; on the right we have Hannah with Katharina's husband... but on the left we have Katharina "in bed" with Hannah's husband...well, technically, at least; and since Hannah almost recognized that Mikkel looks exactly like Michael did 33 years ago I think that Hannah might subconsciously doubt that Ulrich was Mikkel's father EDIT: 50:05 oh hey; hi! I only realized that on a rewatch and you got it the first time around!

on the question how Mikkel went through the passage I wanna say that this question was (back in the day) connected by many people to the question of how Gretchen could go through the passage; after season one many people assumed that there had to be another instable hole where unsuspecting kids and dogs could simply drop through time
@michaelklaus3 ай бұрын
it has to be Claudia from "before season one", right? she does not have access to Adam's perfect time machine that breaks the 33 year cycle; so they can only use the passage and the Tannhaus device that she gives to her younger self one year after this... or so we assume; and that means that Jonas travels to November 2019 "the long way round"... by getting "trained" by Claudia or whatever... and after that he has to travel further the "long way round" until... ??? until he shows up again in the latter half of this season if he does (yeah this makes little sense knoeing you finished this season; but now I am obsessed writing everything as if I could spoil any of that) but that also means that Stranger Jonas is actually not 33 years older than Jonas but 34 years older; Jonas is 16 in November 2019; so in season one the Stranger was not 49 but 50 years old; oddly enough Andreas Pietschmann (who many thought was only in his 40s) was also 50 years old at the time; if we assume that we did not miss Jonas' birthday we should assume that Adam wasn't 82 but is 83... if he is indeed Jonas
@ChannelNamePending6993 ай бұрын
I'm not sure I understand this one, why would Katharina lying down with Mikkel connect to him being sick? Unless you mean that they made him sick on this day for the sake of having those parallel shots. And why would Hannah recognizing the resemblance mean she would doubt he's Ulrich's son?

Respectfully I disagree. (SPOILERS) Eren has a future vision in literally the first scene of the series. Also it's not really true time travel, as many people seem to believe, but memory manipulation/transfer across past and future. It's a very different concept imo, and it's first explicitly introduced in season 3, not 4.
@Wlof253 ай бұрын
@@ChannelNamePending699 I didn't say time travel. I said messing with time, when I talked about AoT. In both cases it is messing with time, whether it is time travel or not and in both cases bootstrap paradoxes are created. You didn't finish Dark so I can't just tell you, but AoT doesn't work. We can revise this when you finish Dark. Also, just because we have memory altering thing from future in episode one, it doesn't mean the time shenanigans was introduced then. It was introduced later, at the end of S3, which had actual effect in the middle of S4. Noah, in Dark, was introduced the first episode we hear about him, even tho lore wise he existed before events on S1.
