Years later I bought a copy of it and was surprised at how much I remembered (most notably the bone-sucking sounds, lol) and how much I enjoyed seeingb8t again. For me the plot holes actually add to the fun. Yes, it feels cheap and a bit cheesy, and yet it still has the feel of an experienced director who knew how to wring suspense and horror out of the material and budget he was given. I like the script, the acting, the plot, the silicates, the sound effects, the pacing and suspense, and the cinematography. It just works for me and is one of my favorite movies. Yes , Jason , i agree : its a very unkind , dismissive type of review ;the tiny dialogue inserts from various scenes all strung together , just irritated me. Like how teaser trailers are put together. To be fair , the presenter is too young to remember the atmosphere in a large cinema auditorium of the day , sitting there in the dark , a few other people dotted around - you hadn't seen the film before and didnt know much about it ; you had only seen the title of the film in the local press : these low budget films were often shown as a late night double bill starting at 11.00pm. Its a good story ; the effects are basic , but the film inspires your imagination -what is UNSEEN can be more scary ; i remember distinctly two good short instances in the film (my two contributions) where good direction and "in- depth character portrayal" are prominent.

Scary movie. Lots of dry British humor. I love Peter Cushing when he says “”Any more transfusions and I’ll be a full bloodied Irishman”. “ I don’t want to stay out here. It’s too damn creepy” “Nasty little creatures, aren’t they?” He seemed to recover quickly after getting his hand chopped off. Loved the straw sucking sounds the silicates made when they were bone sucking. Liked the music and I got a kick out of Edward Judd’s silly head shaking drunken expression on his face before he says “We’ve done it. They’re dead”. They must’ve used leftover spaghetti to add a special effect when the silicates divided.

During the final battle they comment that there are 100 Silicates. I could only see 10. 10 Silicates makes more sense based on the Silicates multiplication factor. And during their final division after they kill the cows they become 20. When David said there about 100 Silicates he said that out of fear. However during the meeting in town hall Peter Cushing said there were 64 Silicates. However, the total number of Silicates after one week will be more than 1 million. The actual total will be 268,435,456!!!! They did not tell the villagers that because that would surely have scared them even more!!!! Scary!!!!!

I remember watching this movie as a kid thinking, they are on this island without even telephones and several radios. Boy, this thing is contrived. It might be a better ending if they said, you know those cows we dosed with radiation so the silicates would eat them and die? Yes. Well there is now another problem, some of them survived, mutated into gigantic carnivorous beasts that have swum to the mainland. The video shows these giant cows with glowing eyes and razor like teeth coming ashore on the mainland. Then one of them says, this has turned into an "udder" disaster at which point everyone laughs for the fadeout end shot. Well, maybe not.
@DarkCornersReviews9 жыл бұрын
***** There is a weird plot point where run out of radiation injection fluid and can't give the cows a full dose... it has no effect on the plot, I like the mutant cow idea much more.
@lewisdoherty76219 жыл бұрын
One weird thing I also noticed was it appears these monsters came out of an area marked "Danger Radiation" or something similar, yet they appeared to die when ingesting radioactive material. I also remember as a kid thinking that goo out of them when they divided looked like chicken noodle soup. The only thing I can imagine why their art guy might have done it that way was the rather common by that time illustrations of DNA dividing in cells in all sorts of publications and television shows. While they are in a spiral, the art people just did flat strips. What happens when there is cell division? The cell splits, the helixes split and one side goes into each new cell. Everyone has seen the illustrations. This movie also reminded me of the silicate life-forms, the Horta, in STAR TREK'S original series episode, "The Devil in the Dark." So I looked it up. ISLAND OF TERROR came out of production in 1966 and a few months later, "The Devil in the Dark" appeared. Hmmmm..
@BingCherry117 жыл бұрын
True they were not able to give each cow a full dose. As a little kid seeing this movie in the theater I thought to myself "This is very bad news"!!! The Silicates might not die because of the lower dose. And just when you think things can't any worse... The Silicates divide thus reducing the effect of the dose to half! I thought to myself "Oh no!!!!!!!!" The Silicates are going eat every one alive!!!!!!! If the goal is to scare the living daylights out of the audience ... this is a brilliant way to do it. I honestly thought the Silicates would survive and devour every last person in that town hall!!!! Scary!!!!!!

I'm so glad to hear you saw this as a bad film. I got about an hour in and finally thought, "this HAS to have a "Bad Movie" review on Dark Corners." Was shocked when it wasn't labeled as a bad review, but was relieved after seeing what you had to say. The basic storyline is, "cure for cancer attacks island." Said that way, I would think it would be obvious to just about anybody that this was a bad idea. The woman and her relationship with the leading man are painfully stereotypical at a time when I would have thought we were moving away from these sort of tropes, but... nope. I don't like the look of the film, either. Yours looked color corrected if a bit muddier than the copy I watched on Tubi, but either way the island NEVER looked menacing to me, ever. I'd happily plop down and spend some time reading on a park bench on this island, given the opportunity. The creatures look like the burnt lasagna monster from Star Trek without as much color, and I was glad to hear I wasn't the only one who thought they were filled with chicken noodle soup. That was ROUGH.

The film spends the first 5 minutes emphasizing how isolated the island is, without explaining why they don't even have a radio. The doctor takes the emergency launch to the mainland to get help, but already knows that he might be coming back by plane, so why not take a 2nd person along to bring the launch back? And you can see a small row boat in the harbour... These are Alfred Hitchcock "icebox" moments, plot holes you might not think about until much later, but once noticed, you cannot forget them!

In this movie I noticed something very interesting and that is that on three (3) different occasions a Silicate had a opportunity to kill Toni!!! 1. The first one was when she is in the car with the window open. A Silicate on top of the car could have easily grabbed her neck just like the silicate that killed Constable Harris in Silicate Mansion. The silicate instead decided to leave. Not because she screamed or because it was afraid of Dr. West or Dr. Stanley!!! Something repulsed it. It ran into that cave in effort get one them using a surprise attack!!!! The silicates know they can't run after people so they "set up" surprise attacks!!!! 2. Attack on Toni #2. At Silicate Mansion two silicates trap Toni, Dr. West, Dr. Stanley and Dr. Landers. The first silicate shoots out its tentacle but does not grab Landers. Something repulses the silicate. Landers steps away from Toni and goes to the silicate with an ax. The silicate promptly kills him. However, silicate No. 2 does not advance towards West and Stanley who are standing shoulder to shoulder with Toni. Silicate No. 2 is being repulsed by something??? . 3. Silicate Attack No. 3. In the Town House at the end a Silicate has Toni pinned up against a wall. (This scene is on seen in the original theater version which I was fortunate enough to see when it was first released in the theaters.) On the internet a picture of that confrontation can be found. The silicate appears to be "smelling" Toni and does not like what he is smelling. The silicate does not attack her???? Instead it decides to kill someone else. It seems to me that Toni must be wearing a perfume which irritates the silicate's respiratory system!!!!! Amazing!!!

I actually like this one. Yeah it's cheesy but definitely a fun watch for a late night Monster Madness. I may be the only person to have bought it on Bluray 😄

I'm split on this one. I liked it when it was made and still like the acting and Fishers' direction. But... The points in this review were spot on.

If anyone was able to see this movie when it was first released in theaters you would know that the "First Autopsy of Ian Bellos" performed by Dr. Landers and Constable Harris was the scariest part of the entire movie. And for some unknown reason has been edited out!!!! Dark Corners Reviewer please tell me you saw this movie in the theater and you remember seeing the "First Autopsy of Ian Bellos"!!! On the DVD and TV versions all you see is Ian Bello's corpse already covered up at the conclusion of the first autopsy!!!

Was I imaging it or is the sound level of your voice now the same as the movie soundtrack? (And did I see a lapel mic?) This isn't a complaint....I'm happy! :) In the past the movie soundtrack was so much louder than your voice it was difficult to adjust correctly.

Tim Hutchinson Every film depending on the source has very different sound levels, some terribly quiet and turning up the volume also turns up the garbage on the sound track. Some (like next week's review) peaks all over the place. I try to get them to match and often fail to varying degree, when I get it right like in this review it is more from luck. It might depend on how you listen to it as well. I find it sounds better with headphones. But thanks I will put more effort into the sound mix in the future.

This looks like a Doctor Who story. I imagine most British horror movies would be so

This movie did really scared me a loooooooong time ago but I did looked for its DVD and I own It! By the way, I think that Island Is in Italy, One boat that comes once in a day sounds tipical. 😁

I really like this film. It is nothing more than a sci-monster flick with 'break out the bong' written into every line of the script. I don't think the acting was bad and clearly the fact that it is set on an island is no different from films like the 'Deadly Bees'. I think of this film as a guilty pleasure, you know, like the early Gamera films.

As a kid I use to watch the Sunday Morning MONSTER MOVIE which showed all theclassic Universal and Hammer Horror movies. Of course I have them all now in mycollection. This is one of my favorites with a great story and acting by Cushing andmost of the cast. The only problem I find is the lead actor and his girl friend who areboring and annoying. but the movie is so cool they don't ruin it. The creatures areso cool with the tentacles and hard tortoise shell that can't be destroyed. I think the ending is excellent. It has the feel of a Hammer film even though it's not. I wishthey would release this on DVD in America. I'm still watching my VHS. Classic Horror.

Quite the contrary, I thought the directing was tense and well paced. Now that I'm an adult, listening to what you say.......yeah, I never thought about that before: just why DO island dwellers not have any boats?? As for why 2 different scientists would create the same thing, I'd say they were simply pursuing a similar line of research; they weren't trying to create monsters, the monsters were an accidental result. And, I think that for the time and budget, the FX were adequate. Great musical score, too.

well I kind of enjoyed this movie as a child watching it on creature features...but how about reviewing the movie they filmed almost at the same time using the same sets: "Island of The Burning Damned"--which this time starred Christopher Lee fending off an alien invasion.

I remember seeing this on a TV late show in the 70's and except for the bad creature effects (Doctor Who budget creatures) I liked it. Someone should do a plot hole script fix and with today's effects masters a good remake could be made.
