THE COMMENTS!!! Read the comments, man!! KZbin users are normally brutal. I have never seen this much well-deserved praise heaped upon such a monumental work of art. Jim Henson would be proud of his legacy. The amount of work they put into this series is nothing short of fantastic. Like Middle Earth or Pandora, here at last is an entirely new world to explore and get lost in. What impresses me the most are the details in everything...so much fine detail in every frame, every scene, every environment, every creature, every character. imo it was good, but as a non-fan I was really expecting a fair amount more. The first few episodes were great. I thought, _super here we have a rich world full of lore, 7 tribes,_ etc. etc. But then … it sadly just rushed past a lot of that. So much so, that at the end I felt I only got to really know 2 tribes, or really just 1.5 (the ruling class and the Grotten class or whatever they're called, but only a bit). After the first 2 episodes I saw the potential for a LOTR- or GoT like full-blown in-depth fantasy. You know, whole episodes dedicated to every tribe and every combination of tribes, the Splitters (arachnids), the planetary lore, _etc._ Sadly, it doesn't really do that beyond a superficial treatment. I repeat, this is my opinion as a non-fan. But there you go.

I absolutely LOVED the series! I found the pacing a little slow and convoluted in the first few episodes - they had a very Game of Thrones feel where there were a lot of different threads to keep track of, some with some deeper political significance - but unlike Game of Thrones, these threads quickly came together and propelled the story immensely! And at the end of the day, the story had to be set so you can't really fault them setting the scenes in the first few episodes. As you say the cinematography, from the camera work down to the character design, costume, props and sets, were absolutely STUNNING! I personally found the CGI a little bit too noticeable sometimes, and it would occasionally distract me from my immersion but the majority of the time it was done very well. Something I'm particularly grateful for, is that not only was it not a "woke" series touting an agenda, but it was not also another opportunity to milk nostalgia. The nods to the movie were subtle and integral to the plot rather than thrown in as a big wink to those who saw the movie - they really allow the story to just develop on its own merit without any such distractions and instead nourish old-time fans simply by building up the world and immersing us in it. In an age of Disney remakes and constant reboots, it's really refreshing to have something that hasn't just been out to bleed a good premise dry of all creativity. absolutely stellar series, and a very fair review of it! Hope they do another series, I want to see the Garthim Wars!

Very, very glad to see high praise for The Dark Crystal: AOE. As someone who grew up Sesame Street as a kid in the 70’s,(they would often show in school, since back then it was considered “educational”, this was elementary school and a lot of progressive schools had sprung up when the hippies entered the workforce). But it was The Muppet Show that had me plopped down every week facing the tv. It was never dumbed down for kids and the violence was like out of a loony tunes cartoon. I saw first Muppet movie in the theater, saw the rest on cable. Hell I even watched Fraggle Rock, and don’t forget Emmet the Otter X-Mas special. And then came The Dark Crystal. I was older but still harbored a love for the muppets and Jim Henson. Hell, Frank Oz did Yoda and had two great cameos in The Blues Brothers and Trading Places. But The Dark Crystal was something different, not quite so cuddly and I’m sure it gave a few wee ones some freaky dreams. But I loved it and was entranced with. Despite all the 80”s nostalgia these days, the reality was grim. Reagan and his voodoo economics, “Greed is Good”, and the Cold War with the Soviets made you wake up wondering if this was the day we got nuked. Growing up in D.C. had the one good point that if we did get nuked you wouldn’t know it since the whole area was of strategic importance and it would get wiped off the map. And Thatcher was right there next to Ronnie standing firm as The Iron Lady. Why am I bringing this up? Because unless you were wealthy life could fairly bleak. Social Services budgets were slashed, unions busted up, and don’t forget the riots. And along comes Jim Henson with The Dark Crystal. Sesame Street it was not. It was well received upon its release, (I loved it the first time I saw it, but further viewings did add to my understanding), but like many classics it has over time been acknowledged by many as possible Jim Henson’s greatest film. Like many I was nervous that Netflix was making a series based on the film. How often have we seen beloved films/stories from the past be remade into utter cash grab pieces of shit, more times than I can count. It’s the rare exception when it’s not shit, (Fury Road being one example, but Hollywood greed has made sure we won’t see another one). So thank you Mr H for giving me hope that this new addition isn’t the pile of crap it could very easily turned out to be. And hopefully the new Joker film will also continue this trend...October will be here in a few weeks.

The only things I've gotten out of her are between "I loved my Raggedy Ann doll" (and all the stories that come with that) and "I loved the Muppets" (again, along with whatever stories she has related to the Muppet Show)... oh and when I started watching The Twilight Zone and Peabody's Improbable History (I like animation as much as I do puppetry), I got stories of how much my uncle loved those. After watching it all I was like, "This better be made available on Blueray this Christmas. I must own it!" Mr. H is right though; you can feel that a lot of love and respect was poured into this. Was it flawless? No. The Gelflings still can't emote too well and there are times the puppets look floaty, especially when the focus is put on their feet. The action is also limited due to the constraints of the puppets. Many action scenes have shake cam and so it's sometimes hard to tell what's happening. Even so the series was very entertaining, especially toward the end when the three main characters meet up and the showdown against the skeksis occurs. You also can't blame the few flaws there are too hard just given the scope of this series. The "Dark Crystal" movie only had 2 main gelflings, and was an hour and half long. Each episode of this series is about an hour long and has MANY gelflings, from all sorts of different clans. So I imagine it's almost like making the movie ten times over. The amount of time that went into every puppet must have been insane.
@Longi19745 жыл бұрын
Episode 7, with the Heretic Skeksis and his counterpart the Wanderer Ur'Ru explaining the history of Thra to the Gelfling with their own puppet show transcended this from brilliant, to legendary. It is so amazing how they actually didn’t completely ruin it! Like they took care of it and now I have a new (Almost) 10 hours of Dark Crystal stuff to watch and I am ecstatic! Thank you for your video and your opinions! I agree with them wholeheartedly! And even if I didn’t (In some parallel universe) agree with you, at least you are talking about it and you are excited for how it turned out and that I can get on board with! So yeah, thanks again for this awesome video and this is actually how I found your KZbin Channel! So Dark Crystal bringing people together still in 2019! Lol

BT 069 that’s so wonderful to know that the generation divide doesn’t matter at all... I love how much us fans of TDC love it in the same way. Transfixed by a world somebody has truly crafted from nothing... Jim Henson is Lord if that world really...

Absolutely amazing with the mix of puppetry and practical effects with CGI mixed in it where needed. If we can get Hollywood to see the practical effects still make for better films to reapply it to beloved franchises like Alien.

I absolutely loved the whole thing, I have to say the highlight of the whole season 1 was the Skesis. Unbelievably evil but also incompetent and comedic at the same time. Chamberlain was the highlight of the whole thing. i originally thought they had changed the lore behind the skesis and mystics but they didn't, they just expanded it and explained it better.

Just finished the last episode, no joke it's one of the most incredible and interesting shows I have ever watched, I loved the original movie and I feel like this show even surpasses the movie in many ways, as a huge fan of puppetry and practical effects this was absolutely perfect, it was completely worth the wait and I hope and pray for a second season

This for me will be a classic not easily forgotten. They truly brought the world to life. I found myself forgetting I was watching puppets as they developed such strong characters. I loved the movie as a kid, I even still have my first printing of the book about the world of the dark crystal. Besides my personal nostalgia, this has been a series that my 16 year old son and I have been able to enjoy together. For those with teenagers you know the gravity of that statement lol. If I were to describe Age of Resistance with one word, it would be .… magical.

Great to hear. I actually didn't really know about Dark Crystal as a child (born in '83), but I was introduced to it the last time I was at the Centre for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta earlier this year. The Jim Henson Company had 2 exhibit sections in their museum. One for Sesame Street and The Muppets, and one exclusively for Dark Crystal. I just got around to watching the movie, since I knew Netflix was releasing this series. It was definitely the masterpiece that everyone claims it is. Great to know the Netflix series is also well done. I'm so used to franchises getting hijacked with sequels, prequels and/or reboots, I wasn't sure if this was going to actually retain its dignity.

Such a classic brought to life again , in the 80's i saw "The Dark Crystal" in theatres it was a revelation and it went on to become a classic and this series is well on it's way to becoming a classic on it's own right , in this new age of television and streaming services. Well done, lovely review.

You're spot on with the cinematography. The best part is that script allows the story to breathe. So many productions feel so rushed that you're left feeling like you missed major plot points with motivations glossed over in favor of action and cgi. That's not the case here. There's action, yes, but you get to KNOW the characters and you care what befalls them. I haven't been able to say that about a film in a LONG time. It exceeded my expectations in nearly every way. This deserves some sort of award.

Watching this, though, is like watching Titanic--you know that whatever happens during the course of the season eventually comes to naught. The various political wranglings between the Gelfling clans didn't interest me in the least. What I found fascinating was the expanded Skeksis characters: SkekMal, the Hunter, and the Heretic & his Mystic counterpart and the Archer. I thought Aughra was well-portrayed. BTW--I attended the original film at the theaters and I was the only one of my friends who liked it. The film initially was just short of being panned by critics for being too slow, too boring. It literally took decades for the film to become remembered as a classic and some of Henson's best work.

Absolutely 100% agree! Fantastic series. I hope it will be a huge success and will be recognised for its phenomenal craftsmenship. Well done to Henson and Netflix for recapturing the essence of the original.

Netflix managed to make a series without injecting some "wokeness" in it?! How the fuck did that happened?! They even managed to turn one of the characters in "Voltron-Legendary Defender" gay and were lecturing Frank Castle that "using violence and killing people is baaad,mkaaaay" in the second season of "The Punisher" ffs!
@kennethjacobs61815 жыл бұрын
Deet had 2 dads and no 1 cared, the Gelfling were all run by woman and no 1 cared. the story was good and they did not need to shove it in your face or say stupid things like our rulers or captain of the guard is female it just was.

exactly, no common sense individual has any issues with those things, its when its handled poorly and at detriment to the story to push a narrative. it works. it just was.

This is a mind-blowing imagination in its purest form. we need to support this as fans of Mythology and creativity. This is unseen worlds at it's best, worlds that can only exist in the Mastery of puppetry and storytelling.. eye candy extravaganza!!! People this can turn the key to the worlds of giants,trolls, mythology... all we need to do is watch and enjoy the ride. Spread the love people... tell everyone..

Just finished the show tonight, and, wow, I was blown away. I went in with no expectations and I LOVE it! I will probably watch it again, and reread all the comics again as well. Loved the puppetry, the perfect use of CGI, and plot. Maybe I could argue that the show was a little long in places for what the story was, but honestly, that’s me nitpicking because I was engaged the whole time. I loved how you sympathized with the Scientist character at some points (especially at the beginning with his animal friend), loved the character of Deet (just made me miss Missandei from GOT, my girl was done about as dirty as Dany). I totally fell in love with this story and world.
