DARK DROP IN GERMANY: “Doesn't fit” Expert dismantles green energy transition illusions
The so-called dark doldrums - a phase in which neither wind nor solar energy supply sufficient electricity - clearly shows the challenges of the German energy transition. With the phase-out of nuclear and coal-fired power, there is a lack of important secure capacity to guarantee the power supply at such times. Electricity has to be purchased at high prices on the exchange, with prices sometimes exceeding 900 euros per megawatt hour.
Professor Manuel Frondel criticizes the fact that energy policy has focused too one-sidedly on the expansion of renewable energies without taking sufficient account of storage capacities or other alternatives. The dependence on nuclear power imports from abroad is particularly paradoxical, even though Germany has decommissioned its own nuclear power plants. However, there are no quick solutions in sight - neither storage facilities nor new power plants can be built in the short term. Frondel calls for decommissioned coal-fired power plants to be kept in reserve to ensure security of supply.
